Hello everyone! Coming back to the good ol' Jatland after quite some time it is a pleasure to see that the strife's and controversies are still managing to be the most popular of the posts and ruling our beloved site! Happy the chain remains unbroken! ;)
And Oh, A Very Happy Republic Day 2006 to everyone… (As usual we nostalgic Indians away from Homeland religiously checked the Parade pictures online and felt good and proud with the rolling out of all the grand pageantry! ) Here is what Miami Herald had to say about ‘This Day in History’ (26th January)
REPUBLIC OF INDIA BORN
January 26, 1950
On January 26, 1950, the Indian constitution takes effect, making the Republic of India the most populous democracy in the world.
Mohandas Gandhi struggled through decades of passive resistance before Britain finally accepted Indian independence. Self-rule had been promised during World War II, but after the war triangular negotiations between Gandhi, the British, and the Muslim League stalled over whether to partition India along religious lines. Eventually, Lord Mountbatten, the viceroy of India, forced through a compromise plan. On August 15, 1947, the former Mogul Empire was divided into the independent nations of India and Pakistan. Gandhi called the agreement the "noblest act of the British nation," but religious strife between Hindus and Muslims soon marred his exhilaration. Hundreds of thousands died, including Gandhi, who was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic in January 1948 during a prayer vigil to an area of Muslim-Hindu violence.
Of course, the most visible thing that stands out from the article is the quote-unquote,’ Noblest Act’… !!! Well wonder why they never really added in there immediately after that sentence - “Hence therefore the ‘Mahatma’ was assassinated immediately after for very obvious reasons!” :o
Anyways, No way this means I am starting another bash the ‘mahatma’ debates…enough of those!… That was just a side note to the Republic Day greetings.
Here is what I am posting on: Mr. Bombay-Vice Daya Nayak! The hero of numerous shootouts with the Bombay (I still prefer that name, thank you! ) underworld and the well known ‘encounter specialist’ seems to be in hot waters himself….. Read on:
