Hello Folks

Just got an idea for starting this thread from 'reviews on books', and a discussion on Kubrick's movies. Lets have a discussion on good creative movies which we the jatlanders have liked...my definition of creative is something that has challenges commonplace knowledge or notions...

to start with some of my favourite movies:

kpax
2001 space odyssey
Dr. Strangelove
Constant Gardener
O brother where art thou
Naach (where did this come from....i thought it was prettty creative:D )...

The 'Godfather' series..... It would not be over exaggerating to say it changed the scape of movie making and stylized the art of cinema the world over, forever! even our own Filmakers are still reeling under it's influence! (that early:'Vidhata', 'Don',and now 'Sarkaar', 'D' etc. and the whole RGV camp, a point in making!)...
This movie(s) from the very early 70's about the scilian mafia family is iconic and huge! (A hearty outbreak of Goosebums is what is fondly assiciated with it by everyone...) the sepia images, flashbacks, slow moving frames with packed and sudden moments of action....camera lingering on actors faces to catch every emotion (Al Pacino was never the same ever...) and the haunting music following each and every real and powerful images....man, I could go on and on................

My next huge favorite (and not in that particular order) on historic filmaking has to be 'Sholay'...but then that would be my next post....gotta run somewhere now........... :)

and i was wondering at what point 'sholay' would enter the discussion...made it pretty soon....its a great movie....guess the best movies are the ones in which every character is well defined and sholay is one such movie...

There are so many great movies in this world and I love all of them. Some worth mentioning are all the movies made by Martin Scorsese (he is my favourite director of all time), and rest are like:

Cidade De Deus (City of Gods, same director later made The Constant Gardener)
American Beauty
Stalag 17 (Best prison escape movie ever)
Amadeus (a true masterpeice about the life of Mozart)
Dog Day Afternoon (Pacino's best performance ever)
Hair (my favourite muscial along with Cabaret)
Le Femme Nikita (cool as hell)
Annie Hall, Manhattan and Bullets over Broadway (all are Woody Allen's best movies)
Leon (my fav. French movie)
Unforgiven
Chinatown
Brazil
Shining (Another scary as hell classic by Kubrick)
Requiem For a Dream (scary but in a different way)

And I can go on and on if I dont pause, I highly recommend these movies to anyone who loves movies with a class and the art of making them.

Yes I was talking about old Devdas. Dalip Kumar's acting was superb in the film. Role of Kanhaya Lal in Mother India as Moneylender was par excellence. And look at the picture of Raj Kumar and Nargis how magnificent they look...Can any present day heroine beat her?

yeah, how can one forget Scorsese... it was pretty dissappointing when he didn't get the oscar for aviator...that reminds me of another good movie with leonardo in it...catch me if u can...

requim for a dream was a wonderfully sad movie...i thought the theme music in bluffmaster (whenever priyanka chopra came into the scene) was the same as requim for dream theme music...

A friend of mine had Le femme nkita...i thought it was some shady guy movie...maybe i should watch it...

Anyone saw Sin City and liked it??

anyone who's seen any classic western flick can tell that sholay is atleast 'inspired' by them, actually creative is quite a tricky word so i later i thought better not to be fixed upon it and let the thread flow...

schindler's list is a superb movie...

For the romantics...'life is beautiful' is beautiful....

Bollywood , India’s film industry, is the largest in the world. It produces over 900 films a year in more than 8 languages.

I have been watching Indian films for so long, I know that if I attempted to make a film, I would succeed in showing real life drama :p :p {kidding}

There are so many examples of movies not really showing reality and it does bother me at times– I mean, its obvious when you watch a David Dhawan film, you’ll shut off your brain.........:D

More or less all the movies mentioned above are simply excellent, not seen all though.!

Heavy names coming though..:) ….and my favorites: Schindler's list, The Godfather, Life is beautiful. Adding onto the list are my favorites: Philadelphia, Shakespeare in Love, A Beautiful Mind and many more actually!!

Lekin Bollywood movies ka koi muqabla nahi…hai kya?..

How can anyone forget those sweet simple comedies full of warmth and ‘feel good’ long lasting impression created by none other than our own beloved Hrishikesh Mukherjee. That era of his infinite ‘supercool’ movies like Chupke-Chupke, Guddi, Bawarchi(to name a few) had a different flavor and even today if I get a chance I think I would like to watch his movies and relish that simplicity and warmth and the way he understood and portrayed common man/ human nature be it through satire or comedy. These movies take you to a different world: simple and realistic to identify with and the contentment is hard to describe in words!

I personally adore such ‘light’ movies and they captivate and motivate me somehow! You know that ‘feel good’ feeling..:) !

Then some of his masterpieces though…Anand, Abhimaan types- truly remarkable- again with a realistic foundation but wonderfully presented!

There is a movie inspired by a true story "DHOOP".This story is inspired by a true life story of parents of Captain Anuj Nayyar of 17 Jat, who was killed in the southwest sector of Tiger Hill on July 5, 1999. For more authenticity, the story is set against backdrop of Delhi, where Nayyars live. This story encapsulates strong emotions.

i think we are getting a nice collection of names of meaningful cinema here....

have been meaning to watch 'march of the penguins'...isn't it the one which got an oscar or something??

Fahrenneit is good too...there's another one by Michael Moore called 'bowling for columbine' which is about gun culture in the US....but Moore has been criticised for his somewhat intuitive interpretations and self- constructed scenes in his movies..

any way it(sholay) was a gr8 all time movie.......but i wont say that it was much creative when you see the western flick first......lol

Naw!Naw Keshav... Sholay was and remains a classic even when and after you watch those spaghetti westerns first! I am sorry to start the discussion on 'Sholay' again, Priti (you the starter of the thread, and the rest spoke a bit of it and seem to have moved on...Heh! Heh! But remember I had said I was gonna come back to this!?!).... so here goes:

While it is interesting that you brought up 'The Magnificent Seven' Keshav, as Sholay did seem to have borrowed the concept of the whole 'hiring-mercenaries-to-get-a-job-done' from that movie...but at the same time it never really copied any scenes; whereas the real truth on copying anything from anywhere is; and if any of you have watched those famous Clint Eastwood flicks, (you just gotta! remember 'The good, the bad and the Ugly'???)...and have watched his two movies: 'Fistful of Dollars' and a 'For a few Dollars more' you wouldn't miss recognizing the couple of scenes that were borrowed/lifted off directly from there in Sholay; Namely- the piece where the whole family is cut down (each one getting shot and the image going still at that point, and then with them falling in slow mo. Down to the last part of that scene where the villain approaches the final survivor; the lil' boy, and raises his rifle...only to have the final ring of the shot being drowned into the next scene- that of the whistle of an arriving train!)...and also the part where the main villain strikes down a running ant/spider on his wrist...

HAVING SAID THAT: while these scenes and flavor, ambience were borrowed, but man did our movie Sholay do justice to each and every of it's scene, and then some! (I mean, look how aaj ki movies lift scenes directly, no creativity; just simple copying word to word)....but that's why Sholay is so much more special; it recreated a drama that could only be called of an Indian flavor at best. It used a theme and then got under the skin of it! Made it it's own and even much more better than any original idea!!!.............................

Anyone saw Sin City and liked it??

...Hmmm, yeah... it was ok! I was getting a lil' put off with the whole black and white, comic book style of filming. Wanted to switch the DVD off and pick up a good DC comic book instead! LOL...

Now Priti, I remember you ealier mentioned 'The Constant Gardener', right? Well, I have watched it and wanted to ask what is that you liked in there that it fell under your fav list?... Don't get me wrong; not questioning your call and I liked the movie too, sorta (it kept me intrigued and glued all along at least) but just as a discussion...
(people who haven't seen the movie and are planning to watch can stop reading right here! :D )
I will tell you my thoughts: While the whole concept (Medical companies making a killing in the poor third world countries)...was worth a subject, and they show the main leads bring the culprits to justice and thus raise a warning sign to the world over, but the way the whole story was put together seemed somehow far-fetched to me (or at least the way the director showed it, did!)...
Consider this; here is a guy who works with a big organization, takes in a mutinous woman as a wife... ignores all his other colleauges warnings on her; loses her eventually, realizes what was happening and then proceeds to take up the world all by himself!!! A guy who is shown as mild mannered and non-dominant is suddenly shown calling the shots everywhere!...he loves her enough to go on a warpath, but apparently had no time to listen when she was talking in the first place!...and then the ending of the movie (and that was the limit for me!) he just sits down and waits for death to walk up to him... what an anticlimax! I was shocked by it! (I guess the male ego in me failed to see eye to eye on that!)... I dunno, the movie was interesting, or should I say 'good' at best!

The movie was hyped a lil' bit at the Oscar's too, and got the lead actress one of the gold baldies for the supporting role, right? (she looks stunning, BTW)

Dear All,

The movies in which Dharmender stars are THE GREATEST. Just watched 'DHARAMVEER' the other day. Kai Oscar milne Chhahiyein thay... what a movie and what story

Raja ki Chhori ka Swayambar, Chhori gai shikar pe, sher mar diya, daku aage, pher Jwala ne bachai, pher Gandharv vivah, rat ne jo sher marya tha us aali sherni aa gi, Jawala ar sherni ki fight, Chhori behosh ar jab utthe se te uska byah ho se ek Raja gelyan, she tells Raja that she is pregnent, Raja accepts her, enter Chhori's brother (Jeevan), Chhori gives birth to two sons, ek ne thaa legyaa Jwala ka Falcon, ek bangya Raj kumar, Chhoryan ka Mama tries to exchange the Rajkumar with his own child but Mami changes it again, jo balak Falcon uthaa ke le gya tha vo ja pahunchya ek Luhar ke ar vo ban gya DHARMENDER....

Ar ya te sirf starting se... What creativity and what fun. No, there can be no greater creativity. Give whatever arguements you want, I will NEVER be convinced...

Regards,

JS Malik

Ha! Ha! Well said Malik saab, but don't you think that you kinda already setting yourself up a lil' skeptical by adding ("Give whatever arguements you want, I will NEVER be convinced...") Heh! Heh!:D

The guys was so good in some of his earlier more meaningful role movies that it is incredible he is never considered in the ranks of the great actors (in the acting department, I mean)...
I am a fan of his very early movies: His role of a professor in; 'Chupke-chupke' was it? (I think he even gave Amitabh a run for his money in that movie)!!! And then in 'Staykam'...and all those other ones with Meena Kumari (I am really doing a blank on his movies names right now), but basically those BW movies where he was in his element and not really the garam Dharam of later...more punch with his acting then actually punching the villians! ;) ...
But then man, could his persona in 'Shalimar' and 'Yaadon Ki Baarat' be forgotten!?!...Geezomighty, what an all macho Dude!

This thread shd be moved to time-pass section. its nothing more than chit-chat... there is no useful discussion possible on favorite movies...

-vinod

LOL!:D Interesting piece of post....really, this brings me to the question I have often asked myself: How to we all access these posts in the first place? I mean, do we first go by where the thread is posted?...(like go directly in to General talk, Time pass...etc. folders, based on what we are in the mood of?) or [like me] go directly to the New-Posts section/folder first and then read thru anything that seems interesting and catches the eye with their title/heading!??!...

So well; basically what I am saying is that unless the title is misleading (and this one was not) and/or one couldn't figure out what it means in the first place and had to come in, read it and find out, (only to strike the forehead with disgust at it's 'time-pass' nature, for example, let's say)....I don't see why it should be such a big deal otherwise!?!

Some of the movies touched me and i feel like watching again and again are:

McNnnna's Gold
Changej KHAN

Mackenna's Gold is one western I still gotta see (have been told by so many people about the greatness of this movie, that it is now frustrating to not be able to get my hands on a copy in the video stores! I dunno why is that...always thought the famous ones should be a given at the stores!)...Gergory peck (our Dev Anand!) supposedly stars in it, right?

And then Chengeiz Khan (I am not sure either how to spell the big guy from Mongol!) apparently has had some versions done in the past, but I do vaguely remember one version that I had watched in my childhood...and that it was quite an exciting movie. Would love to catch it again, even if to relive the childhood nostalgia!

....usually i either i like or dislike films for their overall appeal to me....the liking for this one, i should staightaway say is coming out of my bias for the subject :)....all my working and researching life, I've spent on Business and society, the concepts of corporate social responsibility, corporate ethics and stuff....the boring stuff which has no ultimate answers and you just go round and round and round...a lot of heartache and introspection.... i've got to spent time with people who work in these big organisations (i have myself worked in one and left after i realise what its actually like from inside) and i have found subtle and strong shades of passion for this subject and i have seen people say....ok these organisations are not doing everything right but we are here precisely because of that...we are here because we know we are right...these often leads one to existentialist questions...i saw the same theme in this movie apart from the love story...

so now that i have cleared my bias :) , i'll come back to the movie itself, lets talk about the love story....there is a very old saying...'opposites attract'...this is quite resounding in the movie...in the heroine i saw a humane person who could share her love and protect people....and this 'protection' bit is the one which got her husband to share her convictions (only after her death)....she did not talk to him (about her work) much because she wanted to protect him, because he was unlike her, was different from her and was happy in his gardening (no disrespect, everyone has their own way of finding meaning in life).

He had his doubts about her faithfulness and still he loved her so much he never confronted her...and all his doubts were proved wrong! After her death, to him, she proved to be the constant gardener...tending to people she loved, people who are being betrayed by the big multinationals to make profits....i think i like this movie because it shows that corporate bottomlines (which were created by human and can easily be done away with) have become more important than human lives....we are seeing it everywhere...thank god somebody made a movie on it.....ok...now you've got me started....i think i'll keep my further views to myself...:D

you've got to watch it twice to make proper sense of it....and if you like it more the second time...maybe you should watch syriana and lord of war too...different takes on the same subject...

...Hmmm, yeah... it was ok! I was getting a lil' put off with the whole black and white, comic book style of filming. Wanted to switch the DVD off and pick up a good DC comic book instead! LOL...

Now Priti, I remember you ealier mentioned 'The Constant Gardener', right? Well, I have watched it and wanted to ask what is that you liked in there that it fell under your fav list?... hehehe...what a passionate write-up on sholay....wonderrrful in toto...

Made it it's own and even much more better than any original idea!!!.............................

...Whoa! Attagirl, you are one quiet one, aren't ya! :) Good for you, my compliments to you for being in a field that apparently raises so much passion in ya! At least now, if not in the beginning like you mentioned... (isn't that what it's all about?; working when it is not 'work' but more a passion! believe me I would know...)...

Now that I know where your bias is coming from (Just Kidding!!! :D )...believe me when I say I didn't watch the movie just from the bystander perspective and in all fairness understood why the director had to make the ending like the way he did; it was not some Rambo going against the whole Russian empire (reminds me all the Rambo series were iconic too! Heh!) but simply cause he is just a normal working guy, in the same field finally hoping that his huge sacrifice (and that of his wife before him) would maybe make the world sit up and notice... but I guess just the whole idea of someone in the same field apparently for so long, but still being completely clueless about the underhand workings and happenings (big or small) seemed a lil' far fetched and weird! But then the movie would not be such a end-of-the-seat thriller now, would it!?!...
BUT...having said that, I totally feel that I have gone into the deep end on this one against someone like ya, Ha!...so I guess I shall just politely beg to differ on some of the projected incidental things in the movie (for me always the devil has been in the detail....looking at all the silly small things, I guess! )...
The movie's punch still continues to remain a commendable one in my mind, just like I had said in my initial post, and everything said and done I can't think of a better cast than Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz taking us thru the motions (BTW, have you seen Ralph Fiennes in 'The English Patient'?...)

But I must confess I was also ready to pat myself on the back for being the catalyst that starting you off on a tangent on this one!....cause it made very interesting reading indeed! I am sure those who have read this post of yours must be equally intrigued (and yes, the Movie producers should be paying us for the PR and advertisment, no doubt!;) )...so maybe you wanna keep going on your thoughts there!?!
[Hell, even Vinod must not have imagined the thread could turn from 'time pass' to something more serious and delightfully engaging discussion! (Pun intended! :D Heh! Heh!)]
I will still try and catch those other movies you mentioned and who knows maybe wouldn't even need a second go at them to comprehend fully...LOL! Just Kidding!!!

Do you think Paheli was deserving ???:)

The reason they have given was that Paheli showcases more of an Indian tradition and culture as compared to the other films and was based on Indian literature, which was the idea behind selecting the movie for Ocsars to represent the Indian cinema. Makes sense I guess!!

After ages I got to see such an honest and beautiful Hindi movie that even smelled Indian. In today's time when bollywood just cooks up bad tasting "chicken tikka pizzas", it was great to enjoy khalis "dal-baatti". Paheli did deserve it, I was infact saddened to see it not becoming a finalist in the oscars. Good movie, I have even got the DVD :)

....Aaao Thaakur aao! (:D Just quoting from Sholay, Rathee!...and of course an ode to your pose!)...
Absolutely! 'Gladiator' is another biggie....(again goes back to my contention that computer graphics nowadays can do wonders to a movie) for example those perfect architectural details of the Coliseum and of other Rome buildings in the movie was done in the 3-D max studio etc. kinda computer modelling....and to what a spectacular effect!
But besides that there is something about period drama's that catches the imagination, for example the authentic costume designing is one of the unspoken arts but such an important form of the cinema!!!...

Reminds me:My own pet peeve for example in these times of modern day cinema, and on top of that a big banner film like 'Mangal Pande' still had british soldiers shown in painted cardboard hats and ...well, just plain bad costume designing! Mangal Pande (himself a Brahmin) is shown sporting a rock star like hairdo, and Rajput like mustaches! He's also shown walking around in a Dhoti but with full ankle high boots, more appropriate on the feet of a modern soldier then an 18th century sepoy! Whatever happened to authentic presentation!??!... and then they say we cannot keep up with Hollywood becuase they have better equipments and computer graphic artists etc... well, how about hiring an 'authentic' costume designer for starters next time, rather than have the producers local tailor do the get-ups!?!

Well, anyways...coming back: Russel Crowe did a fine job in 'Gladiator', and by the way as I understand the tigers in the Coliseum fight scene are supposedly from India and were the same one's used later in our very own Ghost thriller movie 'Kaal' (yeah, call those tigers either Bollywood or Hollywood stars from now on!;) No pun intended!)...

Quite the armed forces person choice of movies there! ;)

I must say that 'Saving Private Ryan' was a first of sorts too, with it's very very graphic and realistic battle scenes...including blood, gore and severed, blown up limbs!!!...
Speaking of graphic battle movies...have you watched 'Full Metal Jacket'? This one is from the Vietnam war, and is famous for it's graphic war scenes!

Must say 'Platoon' was such a huge influence on me as a young kid, specially being an Army brat...it had the whole rough, battle weary, adventerous and tough look about it, that one took an immediate liking to this great war movie! No wonder the jury is still out on who was the bigger villian in this Vietnam war.....

Now 'The Bridge on River Kwai' was first read by me as the novel, and although the novel had a sad ending the movie decided to have a much more victorious ending to the drama....but all in all a great movie that did full justice to the Novel. A must see for battle and war movie fans!

More or less all the movies mentioned above are simply excellent, not seen all though.!

Heavy names coming though..:) ….and my favorites: Schindler's list, The Godfather, Life is beautiful. Adding onto the list are my favorites: Philadelphia, Shakespeare in Love, A Beautiful Mind and many more actually!!

...Hmmm, Oh yeah thanks for mentioning;'Life is Beautiful'...because it was really a beautiful movie....I think anyone who watches it can walk away with a heart touched....doean't matter if it is matters on the Jew genocide, Nazism, romance or the simply attitude that drives your everyday thinking....everyone has something to relate to this movie and in their own whichever way!
The message of the movie was simple (but delievered with such a punch) life is so precious, make the most of it...in everyway and everyday, even when the going is tough!!!
LOVED that movie, (and sobbed like a teenager girl towards the end! :D )

You liked 'Philadelphia',Poonam? Hmmmm, it is sorta difficult to relate to a plight like that....at least for me....but hey, the movie was a critics delight, so I guess....

I think it was easy to draw parallels with 'A beautiful mind' and the recent 'The Aviator'....(Hollywood bosses just love a true life story packed and rehashed in a dramatic flavor! )...but they can be compared for the ways both showed how a true genius could never chase away the inner demons! Good movies both... but hah, who cares for the visual (mis)interpretation of autobiographies, anyways! (But that's just me!)

The movies though primarily a means of entertainment but can do wonders to quiver the consciousness of the audience, at least for a while if not long lasting! And I guess Philadelphia had this extraordinary ability as much as the Schindler's List had! Even with its few slipups I think it still stands as an honest and thought provoking movie with a powerful story, sort of inducing a different perspective to the victims of the disease. And pointless to mention the groundbreaking performance of Hanks and Washington!

Life is Beautiful...agree with you in toto..very touching and sweet movie...'Life WAS Beautiful'...!..:)

Dear Friends,
Priti also suggested that we should have review on books too. With all the replies I saw , I think I need to go out and see lot many movies, as I am feeling not being updated.:D

There is one book which I would like to suggest all my Jat friends to buy is ‘Unlimited Power’ by Anthony Robins. It’s a great book as it tell you that all your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them.

VJ

I dont think anyone mentioned 12 angry men. It's a 50s film about 12 jury members who are deciding a murder case. 11 of them believe the accused is guily..1 does not. the movie is shot in real time and follows the discussion of the 12 jurors. it was also made into a pankaj kapur movie called ek ruka hua faisla..haven't seen that yet

others on my fav list include

once upon a time in the west
the good the bad and the ugly
mackena's gold
north by nothwest

i love movies about distorted reality..like the game and the truman show. m also a big fan of tarantino (have seen and reseen pulp fiction and kill bill2 lots of times!!) and ram gopal varma

for real life adventure nothing beats 'touching the void'. i normally hate documentaries but this one had me thinking for days.

...Yup, I did it the other way round...(saw 'Ek Ruka Hua Faisla'), haven't seen the original yet!
And if the courtroom drama (and all that happens behind the scenes; things like how the jury is chosen, how it has to remain neutral/impartial, can also be quite devious in dealings...etc. etc.) kinda stuff moves you, then that has been wonderfully shown in a chillin' thriller called 'Runaway Jury'...a must see!

You are right Rupender, Paheli is not a remake of some borrowed western idea or flick...its a visual version of a folk tale (and thats why poonam's point of it being more indian than its competitors is valid). Also, Amol Palekar is no lobbyist i guess....he appears to be just a good old actor interested in making harmless cinema....and Black was a remake and very anglicised to be representing hindi cinema....oscars have many entries like that....there is nothing regional about it...isn't it?

poonam ji,,,, aap aali baat ghankhaari film mein fit bethey sey,,,,,,,,:) ,,, to me ,,,,,,jury comprising members of national film awards selection committee and other reputed cineastars found "paheli" special.....to many "black" was deserving,,,, but i think palekar outlobbied Lilla bhansali......and there was alreadya gr8 hollywood classy with the theme of black based on Helen Keller experiences...........aur shaayd paheli kissey ki remake na sey.........

actually I did watch Syriana and Constant Gardiner twice to make my sense of them :D , but there aren't many on which i would spend quite so much time.

Would love to continue with my thoughts on the world :D but think that might hijack this thread...to be honest its not many times that i get all flared up about the subject in question...it all gets a bit blurred in the reality that greed is the most basic amongst all other aspects of human nature....or maybe the whole system is setup to project that...and if sumit dahiya is reading this post...dont get me wrong....greed can lead to good things too like the developmental aspects of capitalism...

..

I will still try and catch those other movies you mentioned and who knows maybe wouldn't even need a second go at them to comprehend fully...LOL! Just Kidding!!!

...and I just have to mention that old classic 'Pakeezah' here too! What a wonderful movie,....you know, it was my father's fav movie...and watching it even now, a generation apart, I can just see why!... and can't help but marvel at this beautifully made and created movie of all times! Some films attain a classic status with their massive budgets and wonderful pageantry....'Mughaleazam' was one,...and this to me was the other...............

This movie 'Pakeezah' is so lavish in its treatment of a courtesan's (played by Meena Kumari) turbulent story, that its splendour fills the eye, stirs the senses and showcases the wonderful core at the center of the film. Kamal Amrohi is the movie maker here and he narrates the story (quite dipped I must say) with the despair and the euphoria of human desires, and you are caught up in the swirl of the visual cinemtography, and it's well....almost surreal setting! beautiful...is all that comes to mind!...
Well, who can forget Raj Kumar's,"Aapke yeh paaon bahaut sundar hain...' dialouge, left as a romantic note at the heroine (sleeping blissfully) feet!?!...Classic....wonder how many of you have tried that with a woman??? LOL...nothing comes close to that original style, jaani! ....

See it people, if you already haven't.......you will thank me for it!!!
If Meena Kumari was not haunting in this movie, then nothing ever is or was............

Looks like Jit bhaisaab is fond of robert de niro. Would love to know your views on deer hunter...my initial impression was of it being a verrryyyyy long and slow movie (which it is) but its absolutely brilliant in terms of acting. its one of those movies in which how one changes due to experiences is shown immaculately. His raging bull was good too...

Loved this one....there's one of Jack Nicholson called 'one flew over the cuckoo's nest'...recently copied by Salman Khan in his 'kyun ki' (or maybe i should say used as a background for the same bollywood song and drama sequence)....its one of the initial movies by nicholson...again very slow but nice work of acting...

Jack Nicholson....
Helen Hunt....
This movie allows life to present itself...Be offensive at a coffee shop, go to Baltimore for no real reason whatsoever, understand why someone really loves their dog, and the perception that sketching someone is a way of complimenting them should sink in!!...Act crazy, compulsive, and be so so so politically incorrect!!...At the same time, vitiate all of it by paying the woman you love the greatest compliment you can think of...It works because you mean it...This is the summon substance of who Mr Udall(Jack Nicholson) truly is!! You know, we all have a passionate side to us (related to our background, ethinicity...and training/feild of work etc),...and while I personally don't get too worked up with the whole 'what's up with this world' issue most of the times,...but I do totally understand that all our passion's are somewhat tied back to how this big bad world really works at it's most vicious core...and so really be it any field, subject, desires or beliefs; we all have our pet peeves!!!...
You are right, the subject could easily escalate and become bigger than what we are discussing here (time-pass! yes..yes, Vinod, got it covered dude! ;)) ...so we shall leave that discussion for another day and time and take a rain check here!

ps. Watched the recent Nicholas Cage's 'Lord of War' yet? it kicks you too somewhere, in the same way, albeit presented in a different way and on a different subject...and the satire is unmistakeable!...watch it!

[I thought it was really funny when you added (English) in there after the title!...Ah man, when will we learn in Bollywood, that we could actually strive to have a better act going!...]

Personally I thought the whole idea of the 'Fight Club' was very-very interesting...the whole dual identity going....we all are prey to it at times, are we not!?! (ok, maybe that is a pandora box, and I will leave it alone! LOL...;) )... and really on a more serious note: If one has been to an all boys schooling the subject of the movie is actually much more real than surreal...brawls, bullys and bashing (getting and giving); all 'b's are associated closely to you! Heh! Heh!...There is something so primaly cleansing to loosen that tie, roll up the sleeves and jump right into some pure fist-fighting and no-holds-barred action (the fact that you get hauled to the Principal's office afterwards, and mom never really appreciates that true complexity and badge of honor value of a torn shirt is besides the point)...it can be both exhilarating and degrading (the latter specially when all you ever saw of the action was a black eye and dirt! ;) )...so I think the guy's here probably loved the subject...(and I too would be interested to know the women's take!)

I think this dude Edward Norton is just brilliant in this movie and have loved his; 'Italian Job', 'American History X', 'The score' (another Heist subject), 'Primal fear' etc. movies!...Don't get me wrong; Brad Pitt was simply awesome with his whole toned muscles look and the unrestrained crazy act but I think this guy Norton stole the show with his almost pyscho kinda acting in the movie.....

Lord of war was a great watch, i had seen it before syriana...in fact in some ways better than syriana...i wonder why nobody talked about it in the oscar line up this year....its definitely a different take and i liked it for its ending more than anything else....i expected the ending to be another sob story where the evil brings all bad things to the guy and family but it turned out to be more realistic than that....

dont you think crash had some echoes of fight club....i'm making a very far fetched comparison but the whole thing in fightclub about leading a zombie life and wanting to hit somebody resonated in crash too...

...Till my teens it would have been 'Ben-Hur' for a lack of a better one!!!...But man, now the field of choices is wide open!

I know we talked about 'Gladiator',....how about 'The Last Samurai' people? I had really enjoyed the intense portrayal by Tom Cruise in there....the whole samurai way of life was interesting and intriguing......
Now 'Alexander' and 'Troy' were almost good too in a way, but they kind of fell to the edge of the roadside along the way!....

Yes, this being a topic near to the heart, I had to come back even after quoting: 'The Lion King' first...

I proffered that one as the best and most creative of the litter, because I strongly believe that the true art of animation/cartoon movies comes from the hand drawn, 2-D type of frame by frame animation!...(‘Lion King’, ‘Tarzan’, ‘Beauty and The beast’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Snow white’, ‘Bambi’ etc etc.)....and when you start getting into the realm of 3-d computer animation....even the sky is not the limit...it just becomes unfair comparison!...

Also, it is sad to see Disney, after having been the leader for so many years and having created all those classics for children of all ages....to finally succumb to the pressures and now getting into the rat race of Computer Graphics themselves to somehow equal the gains made by the other studio’s (Pixar, Dreamworks and the others with their famous hits: ‘The Incredibles’, ‘Shark Tales’, ‘Finding Nemo’ etc.)…finally to come out with Disney's very own ‘Chicken Little’ now…

Anyways: that being my own personal pet peeve, I guess I understand one needs to change with the times and accept the inevitable (I mean Disney was losing money on their recent ‘Treasure Planet’, El-Dorado and ‘Atlantis’, hand-drawn 2-D animation movies…and can’t be expected to keep doing the same forever and go bankrupt finally!)…

Any thoughts???

ps. By the way: For the readers benifit: I am attaching my own short hand-drawn doodling with the animation field here....Very sketchily/rough done, it's on a Horse in motion, my favourite topic done a while back (yes, I dream of becoming a part of some animation movie when I grow up! Wow!! this is so natural...U DID THIS? how did u do it?

Amazing.......

Thanks guys! Glad you liked it....(seems like now I have a hope of making it there in animation when I do grow up!)...;)

Yes Vinod, it is a frame by frame sketch of each movement of the Horse, finally tweened (animation term for running it in a sequence) together...I think it was about 6-8 frames in all.... [and NO, I did not pickup the frames and ran with it to get the movement, Vinod!:D ] You can even see if you watch closely how some of the frames are unfinished on the rendering, and definitely all of them are very quick pen sketches by me (Also a huge thanks for the 'so natural' compliment, Priti. Well yes, I love drawing horses, can draw one in my sleep, and having studied their running movements etc...definitely helped) and so it was all just basically me trying to play with a new software that I had found and trying to take my sketching skills to the next level of actually adding movement to them....and really after that, didn't know what to do with it and haven't even bothered with it for some time now (it was done a while ago, and I only remembered it when talking about the animation movies here)

I first simply sketched them one sketch at a time on paper (trick is to also lay a tracing paper on top of the last one and draw the next with a slightly different movement, and then the next and so on...)...and then scanned all these sketches into my computer.

Now as to the software I had used: If you have ever used the software Adobe (Photoshop is also Adobe) then there is a program called Adobe ImageReady, when you click on it. That is the program I had used...
It is a very-very basic dumbed down (for dummies:D ) animation program...and then if you ever wanna take the next leap up of a more serious stuff; then maybe you can think of the most popular Computer animation Program 'Flash'.

Anyways, long story short; that program helps you do all that tweening, assigning time to each frame, looping the frames together etc. BUT of course only once AFTER you have all the frames you want scanned in there and assigned them the sequence you want....

That Helps?

ps. BTW, here is something interesting I think: I did end up using this new found skill to create another more useful lil' animation, I am using at work now to educate folks about planning issues from time to time,....and seeing how you guys liked this one of the Horse, maybe in the next post will attach this other animation too with some discription about what it was all about,....So stay tuned and watch out for this space.....

hey, by the way thanks for sharing your knowledge here....atleast i know the differentiation between real frame by frame animation and the computer graphics one.......am always for human talent than computer concoctions....

Oh of course Priti, no problem....I finally got to brush off my knowledge somewhere! :D Heh!
But on a more serious note, it does always help anyways when you can bump off these ideas etc. with people....

Like I had said, the romantic in me is sad to see that style of animation dying a slow death (a style that gave us so many childhood classics)...but at the same time I recognize the fact that it is a Dinasour getting extinct, cause just like those creatures there is no more space for that old style of frame by frame animation here anymore! The world has moved on; computers are here and taken everyone by the imagination-scruff-of-the-neck and killed this traditional style (which by the way, supported so many small line of animators....You see, the main guy/animator always did the first and last frame and then there would be these bunch of subordinate animators that would do all the 100's of frames in between; now the computer has all of them dead in the water!:( Ah well!)...

Now unfortunately that style is relegated to small time documentaries only (short animation movies)...so if you watch closely in the next Oscars that category has some very fine short animation films....all mostly done the traditional way.

who made finding nemo...was it 2-D or 3-D? its probably my second best animation film after lion king....

Dora was hilarious dumb :D in it.....

LOL! Priti, sure hope didn't make anyone feel guilty for liking a good movie cause it just might be a CG(computer Graphics) animation Movie!!!
Yes, 'Finding Nemo', is CG animation alright (by Pixar)...but you are so right, what a movie!!!, everything else notwithstanding!!!..... Don't get me wrong, computer's might make life easier and overtake the creativity of the hand, but computers definitely don't do stuff all by themselves afterall and in fact one needs to be an awesomely trained animator to able to capture those expressions, ambiance (underwater scenes in this case), realistic movements etc. all by working with complex softwares with complex commands and sometimes even having to create, morph a single scene from more than one software (Multimedia Flash, 3-D studiomax, Mira, CAD etc etc)....

Dora's character was indeed the best punch of the 'Finding Nemo movie...[and My personal favorite scene continues to remain the one with the sea-gulls (stuck in the canvas sail),going,"Mine...Mine, Mine!"....(I remember when the movie first came out; me and some friends who would always horse around the office, and when someone picked up a stapler or something from a desk, immediately start harping in the same squeaky falsetto voice,"Mine...Mine, Mine...!" It sounds corny here, but would make everyone burst out into loud laughs right away)...]

I loved Lion King...saw it twice at one go.......and cried both times when simba's dad dies protecting him:( .......and loved the soundtrack too....

Sorry, but this all is such a personal fav topic, I could be but a lil' kid right now... and I definitely don't mean to hijack this thread of yours Priti (and to think it was you who was worried about hijacking/sidetracking it! LOL...:D ) But JUST gotta add my two cents about all these great movies:

'Lion king's' best character portrayal continues to be the one that shares the least amount of screen space and goes easily missed by most: Rafiki! (the Holyman/Fakir Baboon).....Do you remember the awesome eccentric style and his classic retort [when asked by the now grown up Simba as to who is he?] saying,"Nou, question is; WhoO R Uuu???...wow! very-very smooth for a monkey, dude! :D
Also, I couldn't help but notice that hilarious bruce lee styled crack (aiyeeeyaa!) of his towards the end in the fight with the Hyenas!

This (color sketch this time) animation that keeps looping together was created by me to reflect subtly but in a powerful way what bad planning does and how some of those very mistakes can be corrected by future good design. A trend that somewhat slow but seems to be happening all over US now...

Description about the Animation: The idea was to show that big box retail and sprawling strip-shopping complexes (these Wal-marts, Targets, Shopping Malls etc) eat up so much valuable land with their windowless box like sprawling appearance and add absolutely nothing to the character of the place with their huge sea of parking in front (very car oriented and not at all pedestrian friendly) look and blank facades....
and then thru the animation try and show how these big box of ugly buildings can be slowly and incrementally replaced by better designed and Architectural buildings that add character ambiance to a place and make for better Walkable pedestrian friendly Main streets....the Block as you can see gets redesigned with parking now in structured spaces (garages) and now there are green Plazas fronting taller and well designed Mixed-Use Buildings. (Retail on ground floor with residential and offices above)...

Anyways I for one can go on and on about this,... but Check it out yourself....

Oh yeah, it's a very good piece of filmaking on the period during the British Raj (or when it was on the wane, to be correct)...I have very faint memories of it now, but remember that it was very-very captivating...
The guy who plays the main Indian lead in this mini-series is the same guy that went on to play the Arab villian in Arnold's 'True Lies'...a very good actor.

Is that 'Jewel in...' series being brodcast on some channel or something?....

My favourite animation movies of all time are:
Lion King
Wallace and Gromit (the whole series)
Chicken Run
Triplettes of Belleville (A must see, one of the most creative movies ever)
A Bug's Life
Babe both of them (well not truly animation but couldnt resist mentioning these ones again)
Spirited Away (Japanese Anime at its best)

No I got it from the local library, its actually a 14 part series similar to Brideshead Revisited format (check that one out too)
The story is based on Paul Scott's book series "The Raj Quartet" and begins in 1942, I have only seen 8 of the episodes so far. Will be finishing it by next week if time be.
It is very captivating indeed and very human. It also throws a very neutral light on everything during that time and all the observations sound very logical. I am anxiously looking forward to finish it, surprisingly there are many similarities between JITK and David Lean's A Passage to India. JITK's first two episodes are very similar to the main plot of A Passage to India.
And that actor is British-Pakistani actor Art Malik, I havent seen True Lies though.

You might wanna try Confessions of a Thug by Paul Taylor Meadows or something like that, the name of the book is accurate. Read it long time back, its very good slow in the beginning but it took my fascination with Thuggery and the whole cult to a great height.
I didnt enjoy the Passage movie that much as well I found it way weaker than Lean's other masterpieces (Strangely Dr. Zhivago is my fav. well I guess coz of Julie Christie). JITK is much better although Alec Guinness as a Brahmin was brilliant and Peggy Ashcroft was sweet as ever, but not as sweet and motherly as Zohra Sehgal in JITK:)

Well, yeah I am an Architect whose specialized into Urban Design (Urban Planning) now to be more specific. (Invoved in Master plans of new Towns and Community Designs)...

So, how are you familiar with 'Flash', are you doing animation or something related? You mentioned about 'Painting',...do you mean work of arts on canvas and bigger formats to be done with selling in mind? Well, frankly, this field of work of mine doesn't allow me too much time to patiently start something big like working on a canvas etc. but of course have done/created stuff for people in the past if commissioned on something they wanted specifically...

...Saw 'Memoirs of a Geisha' over the weekend, and what a fanatastically done movie....

One should watch it just to understand what this world of Geisha's are, if for nothing else. It has almost a documentary quality to it and there are even some striking qualities about this movie that can be paralleled to our own Art movies on the lives of women in the red light district...BUT THE COMPARISON STOPS THERE!...

Think again if you have always considered 'Geisha's' as the Japanese version of a common 'Prostitute',....because it is anything but that.
'Geisha', literally translated means 'Artist'...These women each were apparently walking works of art. They are painted and sculpted and taught to perfection the art of dance, walk, serving and conversation.....a piece of the culture that was always considered mysterious.......

Anyways, watch the movie and make your own assumptions...just consider a world filled with incredible beauty, grace, discipline, prestige, honor and success,...and then imagine that same world filled with abuse, neglect, opression, longing and suffering all at the same time!

Quiet sums up the movie for me....

It is a beautifully done movie, with incredible capturing of Japanese landscape and costumes of the Country during the World War era. The performances are just exemplary!!!....

This is again a movie based on a book of the same name (by Arthur Golden)

Watch it!

I have been meaning to see this but just didn't happen...the book sold pretty well too.....reading this fascinating account...i guess i'll have to make time to see this one......

It funny how whenever one starts writing or thinking about one movie, it triggers thoughts about some other movie which links vaguely to the previous one......funny....

so at this instance, i'm reminded of Lost in Translation (maybe the mind stores everything oriental together)...and then i think how good Bill Murray is as an actor...very different....has anyone seen Life Aquatic...and that again reminds me of this guy with twisted nose..Owen Wilson...he was funny in wedding crasher...they appear together quite frequently.......

Yes, the 'Geisha...' movie is fascinating....try and watch it; one can grab it on DVD now....
I guess I also tend to be seduced very much by the whole architectural ambiance and the period, history and culture reflected in these beautifully done movies too! (I mean, the good theme aside...)....

Unfortunately haven't seen either of those Bill Murray movies mentioned... The best movie of his I can remember for me was 'GroundHog Day', the one in which the scene keeps getting repeated for him with different endings.....it was a wonerful movie!

Oh I think this dude Owen Wilson is a super cool, hilarious kinda guy; his comic timing is impeccable! (He always seems to deliver the best when working in tandem with someone! For example: Jackie Chan, Eddie Murphy and Vincent Vaughn!)....;)

Ok people, two another great movies: 'Derailed', and 'History of Violence'....super thrillers! Came out on DVD recently and for all those people who like an edge of the seat non-stop thrill,.....watch these!

Yes Amit, Crash was not so good as to win the Oscar for best movie...it was a great movie with the shades of grey in all characters...very realistic but then it was not awesome...

Brokeback mountain was a funny one for me (sorry i use the term funny to describe many different feelings...like strange, humourous, weird etc..) because I honestly went in to see a weirdo movie but then what I found was really beautiful, natural love story...thats what stuck me about it that being a gay lovestory, it didn't come across as something strange! It actually had a universal emotional appeal to it!!

And obviously the visuals and music was good too...

Can anyone tell me the name of the famous song from hustle and flow...

Oh ok, seems you got me beat on that earlier! Heh! :D ...
I was able to only catch it now on DVD, and I am sure if it was so visually stunning on the idiot box, it must have really been very appealing and spectacualr on the big screen!...Ah well!

Somebody also just mentioned 'The last Emperor'...that is another one movie of the same genre that evokes good feelings and piques interest for a different culture and times!...
I have always wondered why the recent takes on our own heritage have produced only so many duds like for example the recent 'Taj Mahal' !?!... (and then those 'Razia Sultan', 'Tipu' etc. etc. from a while ago!)

'Mughaleazam' was very good, but imagine done so long ago!...Can no one take the mantel and carry out a big budget, spectacualr, epriod drama anymore?....

Well, maybe that has something to do with the fact that most folks hate reading subtitles and it actually does draw one away from the visual artistry and expressions of the actors on screen that can be gone while you were still reading that stupid text below!...
For example; I for one was really screwed up trying to follow the dialogues, action, visuals in 'Crouching tiger...' and the subtitles below, all at the same time, Then finally gave it up and just concentrated on the action! ;)

As for 'Brokeback Mountain', I dunno, still have a huge mental block and sorta homophobic on that topic, and so stayed away!... heard it was done quite beautifully again with the landscape etc, and I for one am a huge fan of Westerns, anways...but that is where I draw the line! Call me orthodox on that, but then that maybe is a discussion for some other time and place! (Anyways; like I remember the quote from somewhere: ‘Ah, those good old days, when men were men and pansies were flowers!!!’)
Every man for himself here, I guess...........(No pun intended! )

‘Crash’ getting the big movie nod at the Oscars proves again that the Academy still has to come around and embrace gay themes, even here in America! (Thank god for small mercies!…I know, I know! Don’t say it: a good movie is a good movie and probably the filmmaker was really disappointed, I am sure…but that’s just me!)…

Haven't seen 'Matchpoint' yet, but one of these days.......

Ramesh, the movie,'The Ghost and Darkness' was awesome! I had loved it...(yes, it even had Om Puri playing a cameo in there of the Indian railroad builder/mazdoors!)...but man those scenes with the man eating Lions, the legend of the African Jungles and the whole ambiance, taste and speed of the movie was super!
Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas were perfectly casted as the Lion-Hunters!...
I think I saw the movie twice!!!...

'The Last Emperor' was great too... it is incredible how the lives of kings/queens everywhere had to go thru so much turmoil and then finally have to come to terms with the present when they just have the 'designation' of being the royals, and nothing else!...(see how the Rajput Royals in India are now progressing from first opening their Forts to Heritage Hotel business to now actually becoming 'Chefs' themselves, commercializing secret recipes of the old times, for a hefty sum to Foreigners who want to taste a piece of Indian culture and it's colorful spices and dishes!

Talk about Hindi movies, your list reminded me of another great: 'Angoor' that Shakespear comedy adopted in Hindi, and what a marvellous job! Sanjeev Kumar was Hillarious!!!:D

Hello Deswal ji

Good to see you here, Among the movies you mentioned, i have seen only three- godfather, predator and les miserable....why dont you share with us what made you like these?

1. Hunchman of Notre Dame : This 1940 movie may not be available in common video outlets - I had watched this in New York, loaning the video cssette from a public library. Filmed in famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Central Paris (I saw this Cathedral recently). Amazingly, such an old movie in B&W, but the sound and picture quality still excellent.

2. The Birds : The 1960 classic by Alfred Hitchcock - how a swarm of birds attack a hamlet. No special effects like today's movies - but still generates natural horror.

3. The Godfather : Again a 70s classic - it was the topic of discussion in January 1977 International Film Festival in New Delhi, though I saw it later - both at theatre and on video too. No special effects, though story of a New York based mafia - but simplicity in filming. In the beginning only it says: "Behind every good fortune, there is a crime".

4. Dancing with the Wolves: Again a simple film - portraying the war between Englishmen and the natives of America. Shows how the native races were eliminated by the White people in North American continent.

5. Predator: As we all know, it is not a simple shooting and does have special effects. Still looks real horror and Arnold Schwarzenegger's style simply appreciable.

6. Les Miserables: Based on the Novel by Victor Hugo : triumph of good over evil. Story of a person who was imprisoned for 20 years just for stealing a piece of bread. He escaped the jail but never took the revenge.

7. The Black Stallion : A castaway (a boy on an unhibited island) - how the boy developed a friendship with a black horse. Both of them escaped from a ship which drowned in the ocean.

8. When the North Wind Blows : How a man lives with 3-4 tigers in a remote village of Siberia.

Today, I have video cassettes/ DVD of all above, except (1) and (4).

2. The Birds : The 1960 classic by Alfred Hitchcock - how a swarm of birds attack a hamlet. No special effects like today's movies - but still generates natural horror.

Yes really a gripping movie without any doubts. The birds seems so friendly in everday life may be so dangerous. You can't imagine ????

Yes. Veto Carleon family have their own values inspite of being the king of New York Mafia and Michael Carleon can still find love in that scenario. Great movie and Novel !!!

5. Predator: As we all know, it is not a simple shooting and does have special effects. Still looks real horror and Arnold Schwarzenegger's style simply appreciable.

Arnold Schwarzenegger in one of his best apearence. Mind blowing movie.

The "Worlds fastest INDIAN" is one of the latest flicks which is one time must watch.....anthony hopkins like alwayz has performed like never before...
basically playing Burt Munro who still has the fastest land record of a motorbike in 1000cc category.....and how actually he manages to land up in America from Newzeland with his firm determination and then eventually is not allowed to enter the competition in denver.....he has outperformed it.........:).....INDIAN is the name of his bike which is modified by BURT himself with house hold stuff like cork and kitchen panel etc.....

The most innovative movie about science fiction is the "Fantastic Voyage"

have you heard about that ??????

Hmmm, 'Fantastic Voyage'...yes, this is one very very old movie, right? (another theme based on a book, if I am not wrong)...but I remember that it was just too Fantastic in the literal meaning of the word (I mean, too fantastic to swallow the concept)....a science fiction genre for sure but the whole set up was a lil' far fetched I remember- miniaturizing a submarine type capsule and sending both it (and its human crew) through an artery into the brain! (the idea being to save the free world against communist assassins!?!).... Ah well!

Anyways, I am not a huge science fiction buff in any case...
But having said that; I must confess having been a religious follower of one Science fiction series 'Star Wars' though,....As a kid was brought up on a heavy dose of the first three amazing sequels and was hugely disappointed with these latest three additions to the classics! But hey, when you have been in love with something you stay loyal to it all the way....so had gone and watched these duds too anyways! (that and for Natalie Portman as Princess Padme' too, of course!) LOL!!!.....

...We have always been lagging in that direction; but if reports are to be believed the animation film industry shall be rising real powerfully and soon! (Banglore and Hyderabad being the cities taking the lead on that!)...Well, will keep fingers crossed for that!

BTW, 'Hanuman' was a good effort; still not there completely in terms of the finesse and slickness like the other animation movies of the world that we are competeing against! But still a long and positive progress from the 'Ramayana' days, which by the way, was done completely with the collaboration of the Japanese (Nippon Company or something)...

Also, have you people watched the 'PantaMedia' churned out movies like; 'Pandavas' and 'Alibaba & Forty Thieves'....? Pretty good animation (Computer graphics)

You know our mythology is so colorful and full of amazing stories that it could be quite a pandora box of themes that can be created into full feature length animation movies.........

Anyways; also seems like they are coming out with 'Hanuman-II' soon!

Well yes the subject was lil far fetched but i just wondered about the imaginaion. Creativity.

I have seen "Star Wars". i agree that three parts were really good.

When i was a kid i used to watch famous serial "Star Trek". That was an amazing science fiction flick.

'Star trek' was ok, and they kept at it till recently on TV here (with all new characters and casts)...but I was somehow never into it, before and even with these new series...

I did like the older cast (Mr. Spock and the Captain played by Shatner) somehow maybe because they were familiar faces to see on TV from childhood.....but those guys/actors are now reduced to doing buffonery on TV and the movies recently....Sad!

...Meaning all the superpower dudes (and Women) caped wonder movies!

The best I have enjoyed is the most recent 'Batman' (begins)...
The 'Superman' series were my fav long ago, but I think I like how slick these super power movies have become now as compared to those older ones!

No more of that clumsy blue screen technology anymore! (it has progressed apparently into the more reliable and slick 'Green' screen technology....remember Ben Stiller in the Oscars?)...

Also, everyone of you 'super power' movies buffs; watch out for the upcoming new 'Superman' movie....that has the main lead in a completely natural (no plastic inserts to make the guy look buff) costume in the blue and red colors of the 'man'!....

Yes Captain Kirk and Dr. Spock were familiar faces. I didn't saw "Star Trek" after that.

I admire "Terminator II - The judgement Day" of all the three Termonator sequels. I had seen it so many times and still enjoy it. Terminator III is not upto that mark. Terminator I was OK. Arnold really looks like a perfect Robo.

ANY body seen the mexican FLICK...AMORES PERROS...;) its a mix of 3 characters which are linked but basically a DOG fight MOVIE with a interesting assortement of characters which converge in the end.....wonderful.I wish if there was an ENGLISH dubbed version....:) iwont discuss the preview here becoz its a MUST watch.......

okkkkk here is it about AMORES PERROS..an extraordinary thriller combining masterfully three different stories where fighting dogs are included, and also using the camera in tricky ways several times probably to increase the excitement. In Mexico there are many ways to earn money for survival in some cases or for lucrative purposes in others. There fights among animals are arranged regularly. In Mexico the so-called Palenques are famous where the people go to see fights between cocks, but also fights of dogs are organized in places less formal than Palenques. In both fights the people bet, some small money but others high sums. The film goes around this issue of fights between dogs, where obviously you have always a persistent dog champion, highly susceptible to be killed by other means in order to take it away. But the film is in fact about the misery of the humans, no matter if they are poor or rich. Amores Perros is an exceptional film, and a sample of the quality of several new-era films in Latin America, which may compete easily in their plots and depth with other films made in Europe and USA.

Oh, Absolutely not...
But here I have to make something very very clear.... (Omygod, you did not ask me this....ready for another 2 hours of lecture on Star Wars then!?! :D Just kidding...)

I will make this short:

The first three are the best (they will not be there on the modern technical flick aspect side of course, as compared to these last three ones)...but they had more body, dialouge and sense to a full blooded real movie! (plus most of us identify more with them as we watched them as kids when they first came out and hence the nostalgia and magic!)...
But of course I watched the last three anyways (because I kept thinking the next one is gonna live up to the hype of the first three....and plus the nostalgia!)....I think the very last/latest one (about the main villian Darth Vader) came the nearest to some semblance of the old glory of the movie, but other than that......nothin'!...
[That, and of course like I mentioned; I went to see Natalie Portman....Heh!;) ....]

Just an advice to anyone who is above 15 please avoid any movie made by George Lucas or Steven Speilberg if you wanna appreciate good cinema.
Speilberg still at times tries to do something worth watching (e.g. Munich) but has never succeeded since "Duel" (which is a great movie made by him). All his movies seem to get outdated very soon and look old, and I cannot stand the use of religion especially Old Testament in his movies at the most unappropriate times. I was very disappointed to see what he did with Kubrick's "AI" as well.
And as far as George Lucas is concerned well he is an enterprise in himself, creative genius but not even a mediocre movie director. I cannot stand Star Wars movie anymore, and the reason why the older movies are considered superior is simply because our generation watched them when we were young. I just wonder how can someone watch these movies still, I havent seen any except the old ones, and neither I intend too.

Talking about creative movies, well recently I watched Stanley Kubrick's "Spartacus" and found it worth watching once. I would recommend it to every Indian movie lover because I felt that hundreds of bollywood movies are nothing but remake of Spartacus again and again. So that is what bollywood to me now, half of the movies are remake of "Romeo and Juliet" plus "Love Story" combined and half are of "Spartacus". Seriously arent bollywood lovers sick of watching same story again and again and again and again:)

I thought education could cure people out of these stupid phobias and other mental illnesses that result in humans discriminating against one another.....but I guess education doesnt seem to have the same effects on everyone to say the least.
By the way aaj te tera naam "Homophobic Superman" :) just kidding.

Anyways I would still recommend you watching it, and would suggest that one should decide watching a movie primarily based on its creative aspect, such as director, actors, editors, and all that......subject matter should be secondary coz after all its a movie (Just a personal view and opinion). What I am tryin to say here is that recently I watched "V for Vendetta" irrespective of the fact that I do not agree with Libertarianism, or similarly I watched "Passion of Christ" and "Dar Untergang" even though I am a staunch critic of anti-sematism. Well anyways to each to his own......its all good:)

P.S. One can avoid "V for Vendetta" and "Passion of Christ" but "Dar Untergang" is simply a great movie....it will definitley please you, drop you jaw and answer many of your questions if you know of an evil man who once lived in Germany called Adolf Hitler. (Excuse the puns please)

Are you talking to me, are you talking to me, well there is noone else you must be talking to me (Robert Deniro Taxi Driver)

Didnt know you will take it to the heart, didnt expect a homophobic superman to be so sensitive, kilki@darling and rolling eyes action.

You did get me quite wrong and took it to extreme, I personally think that more educated a person is more open and less discriminatory or phobic of other people a person will be. Homophobia is not the issue here, openness is, and for me openness doesnt stop anywhere, be it race, gender, colour, caste, sexual orientation, financial background, ideology, or anything. I feel sick of being judgemental on the basis of that, at times like you and everyone else I make such mistakes to in maintaining my openness and might say or do something that might be considered discriminatory but I never shy away from admitting it and then correcting it.

Going to gay bars and hanging out with gays to cure homophobia will be as stupid action as to marry a person of other colour just to prove that one is not racist. Just being open and giving equal respect to everyone will certainly cure any of such mental illness.

What I found awkward was that you could not watch a movie just because of its content and you seemed to have simply ignored it and started to judge me on the basis of this simple suggestion. Thankfully, the movie in question related to homophobia, had it been Lolita then damn man you would have blasted me off and thought of me as a peodophile on loose.

I could not help myself writing this because I do believe in spreading awareness against discrimination. And yes you can call me a PR person or Archbishop of Gay church, but please do not stop there I also do PR and priesthood for all kinds of minorities be it coloured ones, poor ones, females, Hindus of lower castes, religious minorities. And most importantly I cannot stand close-mindedness and conservatism, I have put another example of how dangerous close-mindedness can be in a separtae thread "Lest we forget" you might wanna read it.

And did the guys in Y Tu Mama Tambien really make out at the end? I thought they had just kissed as the woman wanted them to patch up, may be either I missed it or you saw more between the lines than I could. And the thing that impressed me the most in that movie wasnt so trivial (I am past the age when I used to get thrills from seeing nudity or people kissin in movies), rather this movie has a very strong political and Mexican history plot going on, the movie is actually about coming of age of Mexico and the kids are just a metaphor. Try watching it again and notice their names and the places they go to, and especially where the girl comes from (especially after a little read of mexican history) to make it easy for you well guys represent the natives and immigrants and the girl represents Spain ( think of the reason why she was unhappy and older than them). I guess I am sounding like the PR person for the movie now:) But I am sure this will make others see this movie.

And dude please do take it personaly as you got me and my intention wrong I was just suggesting a bit of openness and in this post I aint kidding at all, and its all really cool. Just think of this thing our Jat society is anyways so conservative and narrow minded, so what will happen if educated ones also start displaying narrow mindedness or conservatism about things that really should not matter.

P.S. Watch "To Kill a Mockingbird" reading the book will be even better and you will know where I am coming from :)

yeah things are cool, well look what smart movies can lead us too :)
And I suppose "To Kill a Mocking Bird" was not all and only about racism. It talked about looking at people beyond these stupid trivialities like race, caste and all.

Infact, she starts by showing Gregory Peck I mean Atticus Finch as a maverick in his own right. The relationship he had with his kids was totally unheard of in those times, and he had his share of criticism too. Infact his daughter used to call him Atticus which was not accepetable in those times and even now. So many people could have called him a bad parent but then she proves that his kids were most well groomed with highest morals after all, who were colour blind in times when a black person was considred worst that anything.
Damn I sound preachy yet again, but what to do its such a great story and should be a must read for everyone. I alwasy try to find Hindi versions for such books for my mom and others who cannot read English, but no success yet. Can anyone help please?

Back to movies, well Harper Lee reminded me of her best friend Truman Capote (wonder how those two got along, she so noble and he so gross and honestly evil) Well apart from "In Cold Blood" which was made into a mediocre movie he also wrote "Breakfast at Tiffany's" which was turned into a great movie and I think one of the few romantic movie made for men. So "Breakfast at Tiffany's" it is :)

P.S. The movie "Capote" about Truman's life is simply avoidable, only reason to see that movie would be how Harper Lee was really like and rest is all mediocre.

...back to the movies...(whew, I sure hope that is the end of the selective personal preaching for me...)

Anyways, coming bacl like I said: Another huge movie (from the early 70's I think?)...was 'Yaadon Ki Baraat'! This gem of a movie had superb songs (remember the title song?...and 'Meri Soni, meri tamanna', 'Aap kae Kamre mein koi...'?) and then an even superb frontline cast!

I think Ajit really created the ("Saara Sheher mughe loin kae naam se jaanta hai...!") style from there. And then Dharmuji himself! Wow...that all black ensemble was terrific and what a macho projected image with the anger simmering under the skin look!...Controlled and intense!
Classic movie indeed!
The movie was fast paced for those times and an edge of the seat thriller...I also think the whole coming of age vengeance story took off on Indian Cinema from here (never to be created with the same magic again!)
Another gem from the Hindi movies archives!

There was a recent 'Hidalgo' (not the same theme, but a similar genre!) that was also superb for the adventure buffs!

I have seen this movie "ICE AGE 2"...it's interesting and served as basis for very good jokes.
"The Meltdown" continues with the style of its predecessor both in humor and animation, so those who fell in love with the original will love the sequel too.

And "Yaadon Ki Baraat" also reminds me of "Chura Liya hai Tumne" and off course Zeenat Aman, the only woman who my dad would have fantacised about, and me too.......well honestly I cant be sure about my dad, but Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, Rekha and Helen would defintitly do it for me :)

Kilki@head master

And back to movies, well I like Dharmendra more in his comdey roles, "Tumhara naam kya hai Basanti", and "Chupke-Chupke" .....and I also like his James Bondesque movies like "Charas" and "Aaankhein". Kiye ne "Satyakaam" dekhi hai ? I saw it ages back and really want to see it again,it looked good then but I am sure I will appreciate it even more.

In India people say Dharmendra is bollywood's Marlon Brando. Well I dont know how true is that but Marlon Brando is my all time favourite hero. I like all of his movies a lot especially, "On the Waterfront", "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Last Tango in Paris" and offcourse "The Godfather".

"Fight Club" is another of my favourite movies, if you like twisted movies then do see "12 Monkeys" and "Mullholland Drive", agar kiye ne "Mullholland Drive" samajh main aa jaa te mere te zaroor nata dena :)

I like Hitchcock's movies, but the ones I really like are "Psycho", "Strangers on a Train", "Rope", "Rear Window", "Vertigo", "39 Steps" and "Notorious". "Notorious" is my favourite one of all these, the best combination of a comedy and a thriller and visually "Strangers on a Train" is most remarkable.

Who else here likes B/W movies more than coloured ones, just talking about visual appeal.

Speaking of Pran, it reminds me of an article I read a while ago. Some journalist was interviewed him on his 80th birthday. Upon being asked about not winning too many awards, he jokingly said that had he been born in England he would be knighted and people would refer to him as "Sir Prawn".

Yes, unfortunately missed it on the screen and now it should be out on the DVD's (soon... it not already)...
It is supposed to have been woven around that Black Munich day when Israeli athletes were first taken hostages in their Sports Village rooms by Arab terrorists, and then a very botched German police commando action ensured that the athletes were all excecuted by their kidnappers enroute to the getaway aircraft or something!... That is the true fact, but have no idea how much of that has been shown/inter-woven in the movie!

Supposedly the movie is about the mossad agents trying to track down those very terrorists in the hope of executing them after those killers had been captured but released by the Germans, as lack of evidence!

Can't wait to see it either!

Was this movie 'Gumnaam' the one with Bharat kumar (Manoj Kumar)?... If yes, the movie was indeed such a cool murder thriller with an amazing guessing twist intertwined!
Imagine this: People abandoned on an island (Helen at her best with,"Aare maan bhi lo kya kehti hai Kelly!") ....anyways each one of these shipwrecked (or should I say Plane wrecked) passengers then dying one by one with a horrible death, and none the wiser as to the real culprit till the last frame!!!....Ramsey brothers, eat your heart out...you can never do better than that! :D

Talking about Agatha Christie I must mention,

Witness for Prosecution- greatest courtroom drama (better than 12 Angry Men), Marlene Dietrich is more than even 120 angry men watch this movie for sure.

Murder on the Orient Express- Never liked Hercule Poirot until saw Alberta Finny do it, the movie is sheer class and involves a murder plot which has the higest star quality than any other murder plot has ever seen.

Cheers,

P.S. Thanks for that update on "Gumnaam" whatever it was Mehmood made that movie, although I forgot who the name of the guy who was in the main lead, must have been someone forgettable.

Alright, latest updates:

Watched two movies over the weekend on DVD and what dramatic and opposite impacts of both!

'Munich' is everything that and more! What a move....Eric Bana plays the perfect hollywood version of Sunny Deol, a repressed anger style role!...Too intense and what moving scenes and screenplay! Loved every moment of it!
The best part is that movie is not hitting on any particular race or region as to their role in this mass confusion based directly on the events of the black day in the Munich Olympics (even the terrorists in the movie are shown with their eyes popping out of their heads with fear....) anyways, wouldn't spoil the fun for any of you people here....it is just a very cool movie, and a must watch! Go grab the copy and watch it as soon as you can!

'The New World'.....with Collen Farrell and based on those times of the Sea travellers reaching the virgin lands of the Americas, and their interaction with the locals....the tribal American Indians there (well, more famously identified as the story of 'Pocohontas'!!!) was a complete dud and such a super waste of time.....I must have dozed off a dozen times at least while it was still falshing on the screen.................. It is being called as the next big romance after 'Titanic', but guys, don't fall for that!....

Anyways Ciaos for now, hopefully will be back with more stuff...........and more movies! :D

The movie came in 1995 and is still timeless, who knew Urmila could be so hot and Amir so funny. Rangeeellllaaaaa Re:)haan yaar ,,, rangeela is all time fav......:)

Hey I am rather a late enry to this thread and had not time to go through all the posts. Have we discusses the middle of the road movies? By Hrishikesh Mukerjee's, Basu Bhattacharya's and others, these flicks which were never out and out art movies and did not have a saleble starcast. Those immortalised by the likes of Utpal Dutt (EEEESH! Hamari Munchhey Lao), inimitable Amol Palekar, Faarukh Sheikh and, in some movies, Nasiruddin Shah and Ashok Kumar.

Dont ask how many times I've seen Golmaal, I've lost the count, nevertheless I still burst into laughters when I see the flick. Same goes for Jaane bhi do yaaron.

My personal favorite among them, however, is Chhoti Si baat, a cult movie in which Col.(Retd) Julious Nagendranath Wilfred Singh (Ashok Kumar) teaches a simple, down to earth and suffering form inferiority complex Arun Pradip tricks to woo a girl among other things. Oh gosh! For the first time I am short of words.

Then there is Baaton Baaton Mein, one of the most authentic romantic movies ever made in Bollywood. Chashmebaddur, Hamari Bahu Alka, Angur and Khatta Meetha also are part of the same genre.

I would recommend Katha as well where Farrukh Sheikh is a flamboyant and unscruplous man while his roommate Nasir plays a simple and honest man character to near perfection. Nice guys finish second. Lest I forget a great number sing by the one and only Kishore 'Maine Tumse Kuch Nahi Maanga...'

Awesome.

....and now Indian government has supposedly put a hold on the screening of the movie: 'Da Vinci Code'in India!

Supposedly the Catholics of the country are up in arms against the portrayal and suggestions in the movie that Christ was actually married and that he had a lineage!...and that since India is such a big secular state the government wants to make sure they are not offending anyone!!!..... Even though the Movie makes it clear that everything shown is fiction and it is based on the book of a same name under the fiction section, I guess that is not enough for some sects of people!!!....

Read the book, from which the movie is directly adapted from... it makes an interesting read and you gotta give the author kudos for having done his homework on the research part at least! The Architectural and even some historical facts and events etc. are so detailed and accurate that it is no wonder that the Catholic Church is uncomfortable in it's seat....who knows where the fact becomes fiction!?!...

yes i read it too that the screening has been postponed for a day or too. who cares? The book is worth a read and i feel novels are always better than novel based movies. But for Da vini code, i'll have to see the architectural details brown has mentioned in the novel. Tom Hanks is anyhow a must watch ;) so will definitely go.

I got to see "Parineeta" and found the movie simply perfect. It was heartening to see such an original and fresh effort from bollywood, the movie had everything bollywood in the most perfect blend, was certainly a celebration of Indian culture and a great story.

And about "Da Vinci Code", I have not read the book and not interested in seeing the movie either. That is because, I do not like Ron Howard's movies, I found his "A Beautiful Mind" a very dishonest movie which showed the main hero Noble Laureatte in a very false light I suppose he was better off in "Happy Days" and "Parenthood" was the best he could do. Still I do not see a point in people being against this movie, I am sure all these contoversies are free publicity for a movie which I expect to be nothing more than a mere mediocrity.

Cheers,

P.S. Here is a link for the most informative and well complied web site for a better view of Indian Cinema :)

Yeah well, I still don't see how a day or two of postponment is gonna appease that select few! Let's hope that this does not drag out further!... [The Govt is now supposedly doing a special screening to decide the fate....which means it might push back, delay the opening of the movie all over India. They are even trying to figure out if it should be given an adult rating(!?!)]
Ah well, I plan to catch it here as soon as possible!
I too am looking forward to the depiction of all the cool locations and historic sites!

Here is a picture from the movie..............

The movie is out in Oz today and I can't wait to go and watch it. I read the book and could not put it down until I finished it. I usually don't finish a book in one sitting but this book is an exception and hence I have great expectations from the moive. The trailers that I have seen on the internet seems true to the book which is a good sign even if the critics in Cannes have given the movie a thumbs down (apparently too long - 148 mins running time).

Oh and then there is Xmen 3 coming out next week.:)

Its about a couple who have 'perfectly settled' american lives complete with hispanic maid and stuff and then the guy loses his padded job. Went to see Da Vinci Code last night and lemme tell you, I found it was interesting and gripping. I haven't read the book but my friends who have tell me that the details are exactly to the very minute (for instance the watch tom hanks wears is like the one described in the book). Another striking thing about the movie is its length, its almot 2.15 hrs approx. which s kinda long for an english movie. I read somewhere that the original screenplay was 12 hrs long(phew!).
Coming back to its content, the only thing I like about this movie was that every theory and everything in it is plausible/believable/possible, atleast for a layman, unlike MI/James Bond stuff. It also makes us think about some rudimentary things which we take for granted and which have gone down generations as being true.
All in all a nice movie and nice value for you money.

Saw two really good war movies this weekend!
Both have been around for some time: 'The Battle of Britain' and 'Full Metal Jacket'....

While the first one is a classic and really portrays well the war planes battling it out in dog fights over the skyies of Britain (Germany supposedly had their back broken after being beaten by the Englanders in the air, even after 4 to 1 odds of more planes and pilots! Hitler was over confident with his over touted Luftwaffe....and kinda learnt the lesson that the dogmatic Britishers would never give up, the hard way!)....

Now the second one (Full metal...) is more graphic and well....crude language and all! This one is mostly about what kind of intense training goes in to make killier/battle machines like the marines and eventually about the horrors of the Vietnam war.........Really something too!

Both are awesome movies if you are a battle/war movie buff!

I forgot to mention these ones before, but the tilogy made by Satyajit Ray (Pather Panchali, Aparajito and Apur Sansar) are very good movies and an education about Indian life. All three movies are the life story of one man "Apu" from his birth to his adulthood and a lot happens during this while.

Coming to Smita Patil, it is sad that she died so soon. I have always enjoyed her movies especially the ones made by Shyam Benegal. "Mirch Masala" isnt one of them but it is also a very nice movie. I also remember watching one movie called "Mandi" which was a very good movie that ventures into the evolution of prostitution, as in what major role prostitution plays in Indian or any society and how it gets evolved.

to start with some of my favourite movies:

Dr. Strangelove
Constant Gardener
O brother where art thou
Naach (where did this come from....i thought it was prettty creative:D )...

I think the ending is abrupt to make you curious of what happens next and make you interested in the sequel. Did you know that Johnny Depp's characterisation of Jack Sparrow is based on Rolling Stone Keith Richards and Keith is apparently playing Jack Sparrow's father in the third installment.

The plot was too obvious (as in who is chasing who to get what)... but one definitely feels that the next one (is it the final installment?) is definitely going to be interesting....................

Went to the theather's to watch a hindi film after a long time and saw Anthony Kaun Hai *ing Arshad Warsi, Sanjay Dutt and Minnissha Lamba.

Now while watching the movie I had a feeling of Deja Vu, like I had seen it before somewhere else. No doubt in an English movie but for the life of me could not figure out which movie. Having said that, it was a thoroughly enjoyble affair. Enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone who is a movie buff. Great locations, inspired acting, fast paced and an excellent sound track.

BTW, don't forget to share your views and if anyone else knows which English movie it has been "inspired" from, please let me know. Have fun trying to figure out ke ye Anthony kaun hai?

I'm finally catching up on some hyped up movies.
Recently saw:

The Constant Gardener :
Not too sure what the big deal was. Very average
The Passion of the Christ :
After watching it even I felt like punching Jesus in the face. What
a twit.
Da Vinci Code :
Timepass
Mulholland Dr.:
Just didn't get it. But the babe was good. Couple of scenes were nice.

Next on list Hotel Rwanda and Million Dollar Baby.

Apni Hindi movies are mucccccccccccchhhhhhh better then this
Hollywood crap. No wonder I gave up watching these Enlish movies many
years back. They just can't hold a candle to our modern day Hindi movies.
