BADD – The Natural Sanitorium
In my last two threads, I had explained the medicinal qualities of NEEM (http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15072) and PEEPAL (http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?p=105432#post105432) trees.
Badd (Bargad) or Banyan tree is another such tree in this series which has exceptional herbal qualities, according to Ayurveda. A place where all these three trees (Neem, Peepal, Badd) are planted together, is called a ‘Triveni’. There was an ancient tradition of planting 5 banyan trees at one place, called ‘Panchvati’. Queen Sita had sought shelter in Valmiki’s Panchvati, where the famous book of Ramayana was written by that great Rishi. Those were the golden days when schools or Gurukuls were run under the shades of these huge, dense trees which, apart from giving shelter and protecting them from bad weather, provided fresh, cool air, sweet fruit and other components which, even now, are considered to be the standard ingredients of Ayurvedic medicines for curing various fatal diseases.
In ancient times, there used to be a common notion that if a tuberculosis (Kshaya Rog) patient lives under the shade of Badd trees or in a ‘Panchvati’ continuously for one year and eats wild fruit and herbs, there were 90 per cent chances that he would get rid of this fatal disease ! Hence, this Badd tree was actually used as a sanitorium or a natural hospital by ancient doctors or Vaidyas. But it is the irony of fate that today, in this “modern” world of computers, we have isolated ouselves from that ancient knowledge and are living in a virtual concrete jungle! Unfortunately, regarding Badd, our urban youth know nothing except some ghost-stories associated with it !
The following excerpts have been picked up from the book “Badd” (published by Haryana Sahitya Sansthan, Gurukul Jhajjar) written by late Swami Omanand (http://www.jatland.com/home/Swami_Omanand_Sarswati), the great Jat leader and an Ayurvedic doctor of repute. These are just a few excerpts, not the entire book. On my part, it is the real tribute to that great soul – to present a part of his works to our Jatlanders.
It is pertinent to mention here that Badd is the ‘National Tree’ (http://www.hcilondon.net/india-overview/land-people/national-symbols.html) of India.
I Hope, like ‘NEEM’ and ‘PEEPAL’ threads in this forum, this one on “BADD” would be liked by all Jatlanders.
