Great addition! Alsation!

Shubha Chand Bhai:

I remember a similar pant joke, A Sardar, on the weekend was sitting outside in his lawn all dressed up with his brand new shirt, neck-tie etc. A passingby neighbor puzzled at Sardarji's odd dressing, asked "Kyon Sardarji savere savere nai kapde paye, kithhay jande o?" Sardar says, (I think I better use Hindi here lest I offened someone with my poor Punjabi...!) "Nahi mai kahin nahi ja raha" So the neighbor says "Then why the new clothes?" Sardar says "Bhai weekend hai, kabhi koi ghar aa jaye islye nai kapde pahene hain" But the neighbor was puzzled at something else, he say, "To Sardarji e nickker kyon paye e?" Sardar says, "Kabhi kabhi koi nahi bi annda e!"

SUJATA JI

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
KAUTHALI AND SINDHARA -( I KNOW IT IS A GIFT IN RAINY SEASON FOR THE MARRIED GIRL FROM THE GIRLS FAMILY) .

KUCH AUR WORD --:

KHHAAT- A SELF WEAVED BED
KHHATOOLI - A SMAALER VERSION OF KHHAAT
PEEDHA- EVEN THE MORE SMALLEST VERSION OF KHHAT
NEEJU AUR DHOOL- A STRING AND A BUCKET ATTACHED TO PULL BUCKET FULL OF WATER FROM THE WELL

Rohan:

Let me try...

Sindhara is given in saaman the very time after the girls wedding? It has to be very impressive...

Kauthali: Every saaman thereafter as a token....but a mediocre package will do?

I hope I got it right? But very curious to know the result!

I think you tricked me...but I think I have it figured out....

Sindhara is still the very first gift in Saaman after the wedding, but the daughter-in-law gets it!

Kauthali on the other hand is given to daughter by her parents/brothers every Saaman thereafter to let her know that she is not forgotten!

Here you go brother, find more difficult ones! Thank god Anu didn't get to read the first version or else... I would be in deeeeeep trouble with my Jat general knowledge! :-)

cheers!

Hi Sujataji,

Those are the terms that confuse me most , but now i have a dictionary to refer to :-) .

I have one question though ,
Is Daadas: Your husband' father's father's mother or Your husband's father's mother(your husband's dadi).

Thanks!

This thread started by Sujata ji has a great value in the world of diminishing aboriginal Jat culture and forgotten words/phrase, which at times truly identified us. The sweetness in the words and memories associated with each word makes this thread very exemplary. I want to extend my token of thanks to all who have directly or indirectly helped create (bona), nurtured (seenchna) this thread.

Though it may be long, here is what I remembered/found/complied.

Dadas: Spouse’s dadi (Or Spouse’s Father’s Mom)

You all may perhaps be aware that in order to judge one's knowledge of Haryanavi language the meaning of the following sentence is usually asked: "Dhaandhi aag pharade gair ke doke choolak le". Similarly, in western UP son-in-law is also referred to as "pavna".

Festivals:

‘Sakraant’ pae kuchh yaad aaya:
After one of the boys from our ‘Kunbaa’ got married, his Bride sent the message, ‘Dadda ko manaaoongee’. Even though, my father was not ‘naraaj’ or something (and he never was like that) – but he said, “Jib manaan e aawegi, to mae bhi aise hi thodi naa maan jaaungaa”. Sakraant ko wo jaa ke ‘Balai’ me baith gaye (Just for a fun). But, you know what happened?? He waited for more than 2 hrs. for Bahu to come over (you know, ‘lugaai ka singarna’ kaisa hota hai!!). Shukr hai, unki aadat aisi nahin thi – nahin to ‘Bahu’ nae to unko ‘manaane’ ki bajaye ‘rusaa’ hi diya tha!!

Need some more??? OK, will try!!

Stay tuned
