Swami Ramdev was born (http://www.knowyoga.org/tiki-index.php?page=When+Was+Swami+Ramdev+Born) as Ramkishan in a very humble family of a farmer in Narnaul village at Alipur, in Mahendragarh district of Haryana. Two and half months after he was born half of his body was paralysed but he recovered. He escaped death about seven times.

He studied in his Narnaul village school till 5th. He studied up to Class 8 in nearby village Shahjadpur and then joined a gurukul in Khanpur village to learn Sanskrit. From there he went to Jind district and joined the Kalva gurukul under Acharya Baldev ji Maharaj and later imparted free Yoga training to villagers across Haryana. It is said that he travelled the Himalayas for several years before he settled in Haridwar. He spent a considerable amount of time in the caves of Gangotri. He discovered several medicinal plants in the Himalayas which he uses in treating his patients, apart from reeking the benefits of cow’s urine and manure.

Swami Ramdev started relentless efforts to popularise Yoga in 1995 with the esteblishment of Divya Yoga Mandir Trust, along with Acharya Karamveer and Acharya Balkrishna. While Karamveer is well-versed in Yoga and the Vedas, Balkrishna is a physician with a degree in Ayurveda. Ramdev became the president of the trust, Karamveer the deputy president and Balkrishna the general secretary. The objective of the trust was to reach Yoga in every part of the country and cure as many patients as possible. With this he began activities in health and spiritual pursuits and has cured many incurable diseases since then.

Now thousands of people everyday attend his Yoga camps (http://www.knowyoga.org/tiki-index.php?page=Ramdev+Yoga+Shivirs). And many are following him in Yoga through TV channels (http://www.knowyoga.org/tiki-index.php?page=Ramdev+On+TV) and Videos (http://www.knowyoga.org/tiki-index.php?page=Yoga+Videos+CDs+DVDs+Books). Swamiji has given a new birth to Yoga by bringing it to public and benefiting people with it. He has helped Yoga become popular among common man. He has done so by curing many incurable diseases. He is responsible for a revolution in Yoga and health.

Guru Ramdev has planned a Rs 100-crore dream project, Patanjali Yog Peeth (http://www.knowyoga.org/tiki-index.php?page=Patanjali+Yog+Peeth), at Bahadrabad, about 20km from Haridwar. According to him, "It will catapult Yoga and Ayurveda to its zenith, and lead to mental, spiritual and physical development of people". To be completed in three years, it is an ambitious project with a Yoga university, a naturopathy department which can handle 1,000 patients at a time, a residential complex for patients, a hall for 5,000 people to practise Yoga and the world’s largest hospital ward to treat 5,000 patients a day.

Swamiji believes that "yog se yeh Aaryavrat desh punah Vishva guru ke garimamay pad par pratishthit hoga" ( India will again become world leader through Yoga ). He dreams of a "rog mukt Bharat Varsh aur Vishva" ( Disease free India and World ).

Undoubtedly, Baba Ramdev is doing a selfless service to the humanity. The recent propaganda about existence of human bones in his Ayurvedic medicines proved to be politically motivated. Yoga and Ayurveda were invented and flourished in India. But today, the world is recognizing its importance but unfortunately, in our own country; these systems are being neglected not only by governments, but masses also.

Let me throw some light on Ayurvedic medicines. Some days back, Swami Aryavesh (who is considered to be de facto successor of late Swami Indervesh) came to Geneva in connection with some Working Group on human rights. He stayed with me for a couple of days. Swamiji gifted me about 1 kg. of home-made Chyavanprash which I am still using – I cannot tell you what magical benefits of this tonic I am feeling within my body. He said he, along with some other persons of his organization, had bought necessary raw ingredients from local vendors (‘Pansari’) and prepared some 60-70 kg quantity of this Ayurvedic tonic. The total cost, including labour etc., came out to be not more than Rs. 75/- per kg. - whereas if you go to buy similar quality of Chyavanprash in market, it could be as high as Rs. 800 !

In India, in the name of Ayurvedic medicines, local pharmacies are selling substandard stuff and getting high profits. Swamiji told me that he had himself visited some pharmacies in Saharanpur and Hardwar area manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines. The conditions there were simply pathetic – sugar is being mixed in Chywanprash just to increase its weight and gain high profit, the drums of this tonic were seen lying open with flies and other insects hovering over these drums. The product itself lacked necessary ingredients. Some of these pharmacies were also using labels of Baba Ramdev’s pharmacy, the products of which are in high demand. Their aim was just to gain maximum profit - these elements do not care that it only renders a bad reputation to Ayurveda.

I am sharing this information with all of you just to say that if you do not find an Ayurvedic medicine fit for cure, it is not the fault of Baba Ramdev or the Ayurveda. After all, Baba Ramdev cannot check each and every guy working in his various organizations. And there is no drug controlling authority to check the spurious Auyrvedic products and their price fixation.

In “Health & Fitness” forum, I have put some threads recently which have not been read by many Jatlanders. All of these are in Hindi and the excerpts are from books of Ayurveda written by Swami Omanand of Gurukul Jhajjar – the place from where Baba Ramdev started his career. Unfortunately, after Swamiji’s demise, this institution is also under constant neglect. It used to contain a reputed Ayurvedic laboratory which manufactured so many useful medicines. In my threads, I have quoted some formulas of how to prepare some common Ayurvedic medicines at home. It is our traditional knowledge but in big cities who has got the time to do all this? The city guys are dependant on market forces which are playing havoc with the nice system of Ayurveda and bringing a bad name to it.
