Just bought an HP laptop 6100t for my cousin sister. Core 2 Duo processor, 1 GB Memory (Very important to make sure that you don't get anything less than 1 GB), 40 GB Hard Drive size, 15'' wide screen extra bright monitor, DVD RW free upgrade. It's awesome! Too bad I have to give it away! :p Cost me around 55 thousand Rupees (converted in dollars).

While buying a computer, memory can make the biggest difference. Also in between a laptop and a desktop, I would go for a laptop because I think that the era of desktops is over. People want mobility more than anything else today. I can sit in any corner of my house and work from there. Still, the choice is yours as your needs may be different. Just my 2 cents! :)

Better go for personal computer as your requirement is only internet access and data transfering. Laptop will not be a wise solution.

Go for the CPU purchase here is the items you need to purchase..

1) 80 GB Harddisk (SATA) --> 2500/-
2) 512 MB RAM --> 1200/-
3) P IV processor 2.8GHz -->8500/-
4) 845 GV Motherboard --> 2500/-

In case you prefer more speed and latest technology in your PC then go for
PIV- core duo centrino 2.16 Ghz Processor --> 12000/-

no the era of desktops is not over, performancewise laptops can never overcome desktops

it depends on use and individual lifestyle
laptops should only be viwed as a purchase that shud only be made when necessary. you would not purchase a car with 4 wheel drive unless u had actually use of that feature because otherwise it wudn't justify the added cost, same is the case of laptop
