At the outset, let me tell you what you are going to read below is a by- product (may be side-effect..:D ) of a thread started by Vivek Pannu ....ONLINE HAVAN!!
(read at your own risk..:) )
Well, I understand that was all in good humor. However, if you take a minute and look at more philosophical or dare I say the flip side in this context of ONLINE LIFE (dependent on inetrnet or technology per se).
Do you think it would be absurd to say that most of our activities (doable online) would be done only on internet in near future, do you think there is a remote possibility of that? Sure, I’m talking of the stuff which is feasible online, this havan , for instance (people would have called u crazy had you mentioned this , say 10 yrs back). Aisa ho bhi sakta hai , give us some more yrs down the lane , the way our lives are getting hectic and more dependent on technology , or internet for this matter. It would be comparatively harder to be physically there with your folks, either you would not find time or other factors like distance, its getting so global, everyone is everywhere (how many people in your family are at one place , or in one city?), or another reason could be convenience (and/or addiction) of the technology.
In older times, people used to (or had to, may be..;) ) pay visit to their folks and where are we heading to now? We chat on social websites (we know the names), date online, heard someone got married online (apparently the Indian American chap didn’t have time to fly to India)!!!! WOW!!
In general, reading habits are going down, even if we do, prefer to read ONLine (I bet, missing a hell lot of fun and satisfaction one can have with a book in hand than on the screen). Outdoor activities, especially with the kids, is on decline. Platystations have replaced oudoor sports;laptops have replaced paper notebooks. Speaking of myself, I do miss writing with a pen (What?? Cant you type.. )
It raises kind of mixed feelings, distances, for sure, have been shortened, you might not know who’s living next door but you would be befriending a guy half a globe apart!
Prem Chand, Dinkar and many more phenomenonal writers of old times, what did they have? Just their brain and a paper n pen to write, no influence of any technology whatsoever, no search engines no nothing!!(well, this reminded me of Navin's post, are we evolving?...I'm good at linking stories...heheh..;) )
Gaining a lot but at the cost of a zing attached with the olden times...:)
Phewwwwwww.......done with my blabbering (feel free to ignore, I wrote coz I had to vent this out...)....:D :D

Are we evolving?
Can't say exactly ...as it depends on person to person but not as a whole. some PPL use their intellect here to share with others to uplift the community while some others use to fight here with others without any reason.
Who is wrong and who is right ? Who is going to decide that?
PPL still read the old litrature, online or printed media, doesn't matter, but what we learn from that matters really, i dare to say that.
It's our behaviour with others that decides that in which direction we are heading, maybe with the person living next door or with a person on Net thousand miles away.
Same question again ?
Are we evolving? yes we are.......... but in which direction ?

yeah, this world goind to be one with "different type of technologies"...i cant say how far we would go in this perspecetive you asked for, but having known something amazing and realistice i would all of you want to be aware of it, these are as follows:
1) our airplanes were not designed accurately, on which we fly and think that we are very safe...untill some terrosists attack on our plane...:p
2) if you are having your home near coastal area, please shift it to somewhere else ... far from sea...sea is going to swallow all the people living on the seashore for say after 15-20 years...for sure!!! i believe on this research...tsunami is a little proof of this...and many we will see in coming future like this...
though i diverted from the topic, i am sorry...but these are few kind of things i came to know here...with many others... and surprising... which i cant point out on a forum and discuss.
of course at the last, technologies going to cover us in a small circle...we soon will celebrate diwali and holi on internet with our relatives who are quite far from us...in other words these advanced technologies going to help us meet our desire of being with our families in a moment...!!!!!! just push a button and meet them...with full realistic features...amazing?...

Problem is not in technological advancement but the mindset of we, the people as we are changing with times..
If it was not for internet, we would have never been able to interact with so many jats sitting in different parts of globe. But at the same time, we should not forget talking to our friends living next door to us..we should enjoy the Video games on computers but not forget a game of soccer outside.. we should use the internet for getting info from numerous resources, talking to our friends n family from anywhere in the world but not forget to shut down the computer and spend some quality time doing hobbies or going outside and enjoy the nature. Though, however simple it may sound, it has increasingly become harder to do simple things in life :(
When was the last time you got a paper greeting card for your birthday or New year? We used to keep those cards in our drawers to cherish the memories later but now we just get e-cards which are gone in 60 seconds..we used to write with Ink pen (using chelpark ink) and pencils but now use computer to type, used to go out every evening with friends but now watch 100's of channels at home..life has certainly changed with technology..some for good and some for bad..Unfortunately, it has become just a habit to sigh on thinking all these - hope we actually go back in time eventually and start doing those things again..

yes prasant, we have lost a lot in these the last one or two deacades, but on the other hand these technologies were the only were which could give us a way to explain our views in a moment as i am writing now to this thread. there are many more to come in future and unrealistic...much more than games we play and greetings we sent to our friends, hope you could get a greeting card and others with such a feature that the sender is straight in front of you. you could listen his/her voice and of course could imagine him/her just being in front of a small screen...it may come true that you feel the feeings as expressed in the filim *artificial intelligence*...and/or similar kind of surprises...which we could only discuss but could not justify, right, these kind of research is going on and soon you will be enjoying them momentorily.

Absolutely!!
Had we been not changing, the technological advancment would be just an icing on the cake. Just hope that we do realise this and dont let that zest/vitality slowly leach out of our lives!!

Just an offshoot.....
The entire world is on reducing paper, a great move...no doubt! We got most of the stuff these days on chips/drives/memory sticks ( Even the stuff/data concerning national security/defence!) which is kinda more fluid...no real thing I would say...(not a physicist, please excuse).
God forbid, what if these get infected/corrupted one day..Hypothesising only, some kind of error (its all connected by some kind of waves, aint it?) which effects all the infomation stored everywhere.. (dont know if feasible!!). Well, speaking of myself it does gives me creeps thinking of these, coz all these information is so unreal...not as in papers..which u can touch and see...(ofcourse, one would argue against it...papers could get destroyed too, but again its something which looks more real)..Wot do ya think?

Hi Poonam,
I think the word you were looking for was "Virtual".
Self Correction will happen but we have not hit the top range of technology revolution as yet...it is yet to come.
Once we realize the limitations of technology mindsets will change.
And to answer, if everthing got corrupted is that possible, probable yes, possible no.
What will we do ??
I hope you making "triple" notes of all your posts in your notepad/mind and PC. :)

Just wanted to share a few thoughts on the current technological advancements:
1. Now when ppl cal you the first question they ask is " Where are you" which used to be "How are you?" before handphones invaded our lives......
2. Higher education has already moved to the Net....now you can do MBA's sitting at your home......register online, pay online, get ur lessons online, intract with ur mentors online, clarify ur dobts online thru chat sessions or discussion boards....appear for ur exams online (open book exam) and then get ur degree online by just clicking on the print button.
3. I have read that abt this one Nikkah (marriage) in India, Mumbai sometime back which happened online......actually the groom could not reach mumbai from Dubai, where he was working....so the parents arranged it online...they went to a cyber cafe...the bride and groom sat in front of webcams at their respective locations with of course the the kazi in mumbai...and thats all...
4. Talak on SMS.......... sent the word three times to ur wife, if ur from a particular religion.....
5. Kids have stopped going out to play in the play ground as either they are glued to thier TV sets watching cartoons or are playing online games on thier PC's
6. I know of one couple......both working in a call center in Gurgaon.....these poor chaps hardily get any chance to meet each other face to face...am talking abt quality time spent together.....and are forced to use technology...i mean SMS, emails for such basis things as.....
Wife: Hi Raj, I have cooked Biryana today....have kept it in the fridge....subah garam kar ke khaa leena.......(the wife is in the morning shift and Husband in the night)
Hisband : HI Jaan, It was really nice spending time with u last sunday.....looking forward to seeing you soon ...may be next sunday....and please ask your mummy not to visit on next sunday....i heard that she is planning to come on sunday.....
6. With the current technological advancements in the next 2-3 years, believe me, you will be fined if you will go to a bank...as all the banking functions would be made online either thru internet or phone etc......and with the banks cutting down on employing more human resources.....they will not have staff to attend to your queries or work which you can easily do online.....
And the list is endlesss...........

Like universe, humanity too is expanding and in the process we are moving away from each other. As we all want to pack our lives with as many things as possible, virtual reality takes the centre stage. Day is not too far when there will ve virtual touirs of countries and cities. There is not enough time in life to experince everything real when we want everything. One has to decide for himself or herself what one wants. I would settle with rustic real life and won't waste remaining life running after virtual world..

Hi Poonam
Very thought provoking....I have just few things to say:
Technology just increases choice....but 'we' always have a choice in what and where we put it to use.....
The virtual world is also important, otherwise we all here wouldn not have been able to share our ideas.....and eat each others brains out :p
I do not think we are evolving in a non-personalised manner....infact the whole world is moving towards 'self-unique identity' phenomenon, ask the marketing guys...they are all working towards that!
as I see it, socially we know a lot more people now than in our parents time, but perhaps the quality of acquintance is not there....
We always remember the 'olden golden' days...they always are more precious than the present :)
P.S: I always keep 'a' hard copy of my written work (its a synthesis of all other info) just in case everything crashes...:o

Very interesting, Poonam... this computer aided internet technology is no doubt the biggest thing to happen for our generation and whether it is a boon or a bane is for an individual to decide!
Leaving all the rest sub off-shoots to the discussion to other contributors here, I am gonna try and tackle the ‘technology at work/help’ related spin here. You know the old adage at any kind of work nowdays is that either make it part of your life (at work) or be left behind!
For example: and from personal experience- In Planning, Architecture and Design, it has long been debated that while computers/technology/internet have pushed the final product ahead by million of years; conservatives and the 'old school' still think (and rightly so) that technology can never completely replace the creativity of the hand.... so if you talk to the experts in this field they will insist that technology should only be a 'tool', a 'help' further your ultimate goals but never the tool to conceptualize the design itself in the first place!
So in other words in this field still the first conceptual, most primitive ideas should always be the brain, hand to the eye products only to be then enhanced, solidified by the technology...
An architect will always design the bubble diagrams, conceptual sketches by hand first only to use the aid of AutoCAD to draft out the final product...take another example; all these 3-D gadgetry, Computer aided graphics, animations etc. that we see in the movies nowadays.....none of them would be possible without first the director and the technician having done a story board (drawn/sketched out meticulously by hand) to see how those computer aided super action graphics will proceed to jell together!...
My Point? Technology is [I]mucho important.... learn it, use it in your field of work (whatever it is; not just if you are an IT person) if you are not already doing so....but never abandon/throw the old skills out of the window because the technology can never replace or exist without this skill...computers may crash, but one still needs the good ol' skills to fall back upon when in crisis!
Again that is just in terms of work (or at least in my field of work)... as to this virtual reality thing; it is a boon for business etc. (you can be sitting in the backwaters of kerela and selling your goods to someone in Honolulu) but is a bane for all the misadventures that we see now happening in terms of internet crime...and to a lesser extent the removal of the personal touch when referring to someone; be it someone younger or older (take Jatland for example)...
...But ah, that is a complete topic by itself and I will just leave it at that here!

Very wise I would say!!
When I was writing my thesis, I would keep back ups of the backups and also a hard copy at every step. Even a thought of losing it was too scary and somehow was not able to trust the machines, could be just me..over-paranoid but at times, kind of makes sense..

what you say is so true...it reminds me of QUALRUS, its a software for qualitative researchers like me to analyze thousands of pages of qualitative data electronically...it used to be done manually some 15 years back...anthropologists had the toughest time!!! so am sure many of us are glad that these softwares came into existence and gave some semblence to methods used for analyzing qualitative data (a major criticism of qualitative analysis being its unsystematic nature at the time)......still many qualitative researchers hesitate to use these...citing that the 'hidden meanings and interpretations' (that are the essence of qualitative interpretive social sciences research) can only be realised by a human....now this is an uninformed criticism....Because these people have never used the software, they do not know that it is just a 'tool' to organise your analysis......it helps you code your data but the codes are given by a human, it has artificial intelligence too (it learns from the process and starts suggesting codes after a while which the user can override ofcourse!)....its an amazing innovation for qualitative researchers who used to be imprisoned in the 'obara' of papers containing interview transcripts for years at length, just to come up with some substantive description and findings.....But it is always emphasized that using a software is not a tradeoff for the researcher's due diligence in analysis.......it is just an instrument, a tool providing choice in doing your analysis.....some people still prefer the scissor and cards methods...it just takes ages though!
ok, got a little carried away there in the example, but for me really technology is a tool providing choice....and as Shail said it is an essential tool to keep pace if you are in some sort of market competitition...or if you want to personally save time, have a better service and all....but I guess not a zero sum game.....ok i'm just thinking out loud here....hope it is making some sense:o

ok people, apologies for the random thoughts but its all Poonam;s fault, she got me thinking....
The great thing is that despite the onslaught of online activities, the actual activities are still thriving. You buy groceries online but I still prefer actually looking at the stuff I buy, you can order books online...but its another thing to actually go to the bookstore, see all the books, have a little read at the shop's cafe, we meet friends online but we also a friends physically present at every weekend, we talk to family on the phone, but we also go and meet them (despite the distances...its all possible because of technology)....so i guess there are some things that virtual world cannot overcome! (atleast today...cant say anything for tomorrow....maybe tomorrow my mum can just be at two places at one time :) ,,,i wouldn't like that though! its kind of creepy...)
Kids! I guess thats the vital issue.....lest they forget the good old actual world....definitely they need the playstations to keep pace with the peer discussions at school (and not qualify as weirdos)...but not at the cost of not valuing natural world....and the rough tough sports .........I'm just repeating the thoughts now...so will stop!
but true......quantity is thriving at the cost of quality....so much to do...so less time!!

Hi guys, i afraid that what you are talking about is not that bad if we think what future is holding us for human beings.
Technology is going to rule over the human being in future and human being who thinks that they have created or invented the technology will be the slaves. Prediction is not for thousand years ahread but just for few dacades from now. Enthu techies are going to comment that i have underestimated the situation while laymans are going to claim that my thoughts are far fetched but being a techie who thinks like a layman i am just trying trying to show a glimpse of the new world we have to see or may be our next genertation. :)
It will be the world of computers where computers will be the masters and humans will be there slaves. Human beings will be eliminated from planet Earth and surviver will be slaves of the machines. Gud and bad computers are going to fight in terms of hacking the useful data or installing viruses on hostile machines. Supercomputer would be supposed to do the job of cops. This doesn't going to stop here at all, Terminators with leathal weapons are going to wander in streets, and of course there would be gud and bad terminators.
Forget about wild life then, if anyone see a lion and want to tell othres that he/she saw a lion , ppl are going to make fun of him/her like he/she had seen an UFO. And that would be the hot news of that time ( ofcourse online, forget about paper newspapers ) How that sounds?
Only one thing can stop it ? If and only if US, Russia, China etc utilize their nuclear warheads and all the technology get destroyed on this planet Earth.
But mankind is still going to live thereafter too, humans are going to strat it again from scratch and ...... Construction....... than ............ destruction ................... construction and .... destruction.................... again construction.................. this cycle is going to repeat ever again and again untill planet Earth is worth living.
Is this scenario interesting or scary for mankind ???
ARE WE EVOLVING ?

Vijay, lagta hai Terminator Part 3 dekhi hai recently.. darao mat yaar :D
On a serious note, I don't think that technology will be so advanced that computers will actually rule the humans..this will be just like saying that humans will rule God one day coz they can travel to Space and distant galaxies.. Remember the creator always knows how you have been created and how you can be destroyed..
I am just waiting for the day when it would be able to beam people just like we fax paper anywhere in the world - the only roadblock is our soul but it might be possible to transfer it through the high capacity wires coz its just like current to our body..

Yes things have changed, to day a 76 year old can send a email to to a young, unknown in the conventional sense, girl through jatland .com, earlier such a letter to an unknown girl would have been considered scandalous.
let us live in the present, keeping the past at the back of our mind as guide.
