Sincere performances, gusty direction and fantastic photography define the flick ‘Apne.’ A complete Dharmendra movie, with heady mix of emotional melodrama and family bonding, ‘Apne’ revolves around a distraught father-cum-sportsman (or vice-versa?) and his two sons chasing their own dreams. A way of life in typical Indian families, Anil Sharma, the director, has succeeded once again in this family bonding saga, with lots of characters scattered here and there unnecessarily.

The movie portrays the troubled persona of a failed sportsman and his changed individual equations with his loved ones. Baldev Singh Chaudhary (Dharmendra) is a frustrated man on both personal and professional fronts. Banned for fifteen years, his dream to be the first Indian World Heavyweight Boxing Champion ever was shattered because of false doping charges. The hurt and disgrace of an unsuccessful sportsman, labeled as cheater, Baldev Singh wants his elder son, Angad (Sunny Deol) to salvage the lost glory for his father and country too. And he does that, of course in flamboyant manner, and after lots of wet hankies in pockets. In between, there are too many slips between the cup and the lips, as expected in true filmy style.

Dharmendra is the real hero of this ‘desi at heart’ flick. He is the real backbone of the story, who almost carries the movie on his shoulder thoroughly. Though both junior Deols and other actors have done well but Dharmendra has overshadowed everyone else with his intense display of emotions and brilliant acting. Bobby comes up again with sincere performance and Sunny Paaji is as usual, solid. The dialogues such as “Cheer doonga…faad doonga yahin ki yahin…(I will slice you here only)” go well only with our Gadar-guy Sunny deol.

The film scores very high on emotional pitch and cinematography. The characters take time to develop, but once in full form, audience could feel the complex web of relations shared by the family in question.

The story has its gripping moments as well as weak links. The tense relationship of father Baldev Singh and elder son Angad set the tone for the movie. The movie has quite a few turning points reminding me of ManMohan Desai kinda cinema. The boxing scenes, used as the real backdrop of the story, really work too well in strengthening the script. Especially, our junior Deol (Bobby Deol) looks stunning as a boxer with his long locks in boxing ring.

Kiran Kher holds her ground steadily in crowd.

In the heavy presence of three Deols, Shilpa Shetty still manages to register her presence through her electrifying smile and few latka-jhatkas here and there.

The script could have been better without the second heroine Katrina Kaif, who doesn’t have much to do except smile or cry in family photos. Katrina still needs to learn the ABC of acting. Having movies with the big banners and talented co-actors, hopefully, she will do the needful soon.

Alas, highly talented actor Victor Benerjee is totally wasted in this movie.

Chandigarh has been shot wonderfully in the movie. The sun-set scene at Sukhna Jheel is shot marvelously. While, the confrontation scenes between Dharmendra and Sunny have been the most impressive, editing could have been far better. Certain scenes like silly jokes of Bhagwant Maan and few others could easily have been edited out for better story flow. The biggest disappointment from ‘Apne’ is its music. Even not worth of mention here. Bad job Himesh!

I am one of those people who love to cry during the centi scenes and this movie is quite rich in emotions and content so I too had my moments of misty-eyes. Overall, the film is fully paisa vasool with intensely choreographed boxing-ring scenes and well-etched characters.

And one thing more for record, both Dharmendra and Kiran Kher share an amazing on-screen chemistry.

Strengths: Dharmendra, Dharmendra, Dharmendra,

Weaknesses: Himesh Reshmiya’s music, Length of movie

Repeat value: Hmmmm…….Would surely enjoy first time!
