This day (31 October) is known for two Indian personalities - the birthday of Sardar Patel (in 1875) and assassination of Indira Gandhi (1984). The term "Iron-man" was correctly linked to Sardar Patel who was solely responsible for making a union of free India. Sardar gave a tough hand to factions like Hyderabad's nawab and some others who wanted to remain with Pakistan or a separate entity within India. Had Nehru given a free hand to Sardar in the matter of J&K, there would not have been the current turmoil in that area, which has become a great headache for India.

Earlier, there has been some discussion in Sumit Dahiya's thread Sardar Vallab Bhai Patel (http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14540&highlight=Sardar+Patel). Salute to this great man.

By the way, Joseph Stalin was also termed "iron-man" of Russia. 'Stalin' is not his real name, it only means 'man of steel'.

I just remembered that Sardar Patel breathed his last on 15 December 1950. We missed to remember him both on his birthday and his death anniversary. Had Sardar survived for some more time, perhaps there would not have been this kind of insurgency on our western borders as we are seeing now.
