Ram Ram to all,

I doubt if anybody of you know about Pradeep Sihag, the most successful Boxer from India till yet. Now am sure many of you must be wondering that this name is never heard then how come he is the best boxer. I dont have much info yet but its sucha pleasure n sense of pride to share with u all!! :)

Well, I still recall couple of years ago a short programme about a Boxer frm Hisar, Haryana was being showed, that documentry was about path to glory of a poor village Jat boy Pradeep Sihag, I dont remember much thou but still recall that anchor was admiring immense hard work, dedication & determination of this boy as well as his father's sacrifices & faith, like selling of his land to finance his son's match in Australia etc. But That was hardtime as Pradeep tells.

This champ has proved it all...now he is :

Next year he is goin to USA for mainstream boxing and want to take his country, commuity n family's name to new heights!!

I recently met this guy on Orkut and it was sucha privilage n pleasure to interact with him and he is sucha simple, downtoearth & nice fellow. :) I asked him provide me some more info regarding his path to glory! just waitin for that...

He's the Champ and we all should proud of him and wish him all the very best for future!!

Jit, sorry so say but your inputs are ill informated. I also know him (Pardeep) personally, have met him here but he has never played for India in any international competition. Moreoever never had participated in Commonwealth or any kind of world level competition. He doesnt have any achievement even on National level.
Let me give you some more first hand information. Vijender Singh
(Beniwal), Commonwealth Games 2006 Silver medallist (69Kgs) is much more successful than him. His records speak for himself. I have a few links to support my inputs. Below are a few of them :

Well, No need for sorry bro!

I guess he played at national level in junior tournaments!! I'm not sure he had represented India on International level or not! :) But this is true that he's no#1 Boxer in Australia and u also know that I think!!

For the time being I've got this lil knowledge only....Its great that you know that Sihag and met him in person!!

Pannu, why dont u get some more info frm him when u meet him next time and update here.

But his path to glory against all odds n hardships is no doubt admirable!! He certainly made whole commuity proud!! :)

I agree that the thread may ill informed but on the other side if u see its sucha matter of pride for all of us that a Jat boy from village is shining our commuity's name in a far away country with his sheer determination and hard work!!

Shouldnt we all appreciate him for his achievment and wish him for the best in future??!!

BHIWANI BOXER VIJENDER SINGH-KALUWAS
http://www.tribuneindia.com/2006/20060401/spr-trib.htm

IN THE NEWS
Punch Line

Bhiwani boxers Jitender Kumar and Vijender, who won a bronze and a silver, respectively, at the Commonwealth Games, have more in common than the sport they love and the district they come from. Both hail from lower middle-class families, have illiterate mothers but matriculate fathers. Both love doodh and dahi but shun ghee. Both families want them to win a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics.

While Vijender joined as a Senior Railways Ticket Examiner at Jaipur a few months ago, Jitender and his family want the Railways to offer him a job.

Jitender, who won the bronze in the 51 kg flyweight category, comes from a Brahmin family of Devsar village located on the outskirts of Bhiwani. The village was so far known for its temple where a mela is held every year. It is now also known as boxer Jitender’s village. His parental house is a typical three-room village house with no frills. The outer walls are still expecting their first coat of paint.

His father Sajjan Kumar is a retired Army jawan. Sajjan and his five brothers have between them just five acres. Jitender, a Class XII student, is the youngest of the three children. His elder brother Surinder Kumar is employed by a transport company, while sister Poonam is married in a nearby village.

His mother Vidya Devi never went to school but seeing her youngest child’s interest in sports, she ensured that he got the lion’s share of the doodh and dahi available in the kitchen. “None of his siblings ever resented it,” she says. Jitender’s father says he never objected to his spending long hours at the SAI hostel in Bhiwani. “But he never gave me any reason for complaint since he also scored over 50 per cent marks in his examinations,” he adds.

Vijender’s family owns no land. His father, a driver with Haryana Roadways, has a house in Kaluwas village along the Meham-Bhiwani road. Vijender’s cash rewards for his medals in various international meets have helped the family build a house with all the trappings of a comfortable urban dwelling. It has an inverter to keep the desert coolers running during power cuts. The furniture is new and the kitchen “modern” by village standards.

Vijender’s mother Krishna has also ensured that he got all the milk and curd he needed to make him strong. “Besides, I always gave him the money he wanted to pursue his sport”, she says. Vijender’s elder brother Manoj, a Havildar in the Army, is also a boxer. So are three of his cousins.

Both families have set their sights on the next Olympics. They express the same sentiment — so far so good, but it’s the Olympic gold that they want. Once that happens, both mothers also want their sons to get married and bring home a “homely” wife.

Some more info on Pradeep from an online article in tribuneindia dated August 3, 2005 - http://www.tribuneindia.com/2005/20050804/sports.htm
-------------------------------------------------------
Cast away by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), a 19-year-old promising boxer from Bhiwani has struck gold, literally, in Australia.

Pradeep Shiag was one of the boxers selected for the Youth Commonwealth Games in Australia in November, 2004. But a few hours before the departure of the Indian team, Pradeep was told that he had been dropped from the team, and his blazer and other official documents were taken back in the middle of night.

The reason cited for his exclusion from the team was that he had undergone an eye operation, and was therefore unfit to box.

Pradeep Shiag was shattered as he was a good middle weight boxer (75kg), and had shown his mettle in various national championships. He was part of over seven coaching camps conducted by the SAI, but when his time of reckoning came, the SAI bosses cast him away mercilessly.

With his ambition to represent the country shattered, Pradeep, belonging to a poor family, and who had honed his boxing skills at the Haryana Boxing Academy at Bhiwani, under coach Rajeev Dhangad, decided to try his luck in the professional circuit, and joined the Fighter Factory boxing club in Melbourne, Australia.

Pradeep found a benefactor in Mori Thompson, who sponsored his stay and training expenses in Australia.

Soon, Pradeep Shiag boxed his way to glory winning six professional events, which included four knockouts and two by points. His boxing skills were in full flow when he won the Pan Asian Championship, which fetched him a gold belt weighing 1.5 kg and a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.

He also lifted the Australian Championship title and has now set his sight on the professional circuit in the USA, starting in September.

But before that, he wants to hone his skills at his alma mater, the Haryana Boxing Academy at Bhiwani, where he would train for 15 days.

Pradeep is now ranked 12th in the World Boxing Council list and second in Australia in his weight category.

Pradeep was given a rousing welcome when he arrived in Delhi last night. He said his biggest regret was that he would not be able to represent the country in the Olympics, having turned professional.

His coach Rajeev Dhangad said the young boy had a 100 per cent chance of making it into the US professional circuit for which he would have to win four contests.

He will train at Bhiwani till August 20 before leaving for the USA to compete in the world championship series.

For latest info, we can ask Pradeep to join jatland and tell more about himself :)

Cool, he is more towards the professional side of game. He used to play for a club Fighters Factory, which you have already mentioned above. The club is located here in a suburb called Blackburn. Fights are usually fought over the weekend. I am unsure about his current status though, had been ages since we have communicated. He had won several bouts overseas and locally too. But yet again I would say Vijender stands on the top at the moment if we talk about achievements here. By saying so I am not underestimating Pardeep's achievements. Certainly a proud thing for us people.

While I've come to know about Sihag through this thread only, I've heard a lot about Vijender. I don't know how many of you have met him but so far as I've seen him, he's not only the among the best Indian boxers around, he's simply the best looking as well. I'll try to post some of his pics in the picture gallery.

He's the one, no doubts, but not the only. India's Olympic hopes is a 17-year-old boxer from Haryana: SUnil Kumar -- a tremendous talent.
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/007200712032023.htm

Then there is Commonwealth Champion Akhil Kumar from Bhivani. However, this 26-yeal-old pugilist, due to niggles and stuff, is over the hill.

There are others as well. AL Lakra (I can't confirm of he is a Jat) is the first boxer to qualify for the Olympics.

Then there is one Dilbagh Singh.

Many of these boxers have come Bhivani.
