At the top of Sports forum page of Jatland, there is a title: "Sports Discuss Cricket to Kabaddi". Let us discuss something on Kabaddi etc., apart from cricket.

Cricket frenzy is going on now-a-days. But there does not seem to be much media-attention (or govt's attention) towards desi sports like kabaddi, Indian style wrestling and even popular games like hockey. I was searching to find some photograph of famous wrestler of yesteryears, Hind Kesari Satpal of Bawana village, who finds place in Jatland’s wiki section (http://www.jatland.com/home/Satpal (http://www.jatland.com/home/Satpal)). Idea was to put a photo of Satpal on this web-page but my search failed.

While huge sums are being spent on media-choice games like tennis and cricket, other games receive an annual grant of a few lakh rupees each. See the following page of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.

The general budget has been announced – big promises for removal of poverty and debt-relief for farmers – only the vote-bank politics. What about sports? That too at a time when India is preparing for Asian Games in 2010 and this year (2008) is the year for Olympics. (Please be advised that cricket finds no place in Olympics)

Don’t you feel that sports budget should have been considerably enhanced?

Yes Deswal sir, you are absolutely right. Something should have done about it. But then, not all can be asked for in just one budget. I am very happy that farmer loans got omitted. Let's pray they do something about sports in the next budget.

And, talking about Kabaddi, of all that I know, India almost wins every competition they play in Kabbadi. But, these players are neither awarded nor appraised :(.

Thanks,
Sumit

I came across this news item today. Satpal is at pains that wrestling is being ignored and his own son plays cricket.
