The government is viewing seriously complaints from soldiers serving as batmen for senior officers as part of a tradition begun during the British Raj.

The army accounts for most of the nearly 35,000 soldiers who are attached to officers ostensibly for the upkeep of their service weapons and uniforms. In reality, however, they end up as domestic orderlies. This, the soldiers and their families say, causes all the problems.Called ’sahayaks’ (assistants) in the Indian Army, they allege that they get poor quality uniform, their promotions are often delayed and that seniors often humiliate them. The soldiers say that this offends their sense of dignity.Although the Sixth Pay Commission has recommended the abolition of the sahayak system in the paramilitary forces, the army finds these soldiers indispensable.A hawaldar told IANS on condition of anonymity: ‘Our problems are many. We put in long hours but still there is no dignity for us. The officers abuse us at times asking us to do household work. Also, the pay is low.’

‘We also end up buying our uniforms from private dealers using our own money,’ he said.
Said another soldier: ‘As long as the officer is a bachelor, the problems are not that serious. But once he marries and has a family, our problems multiply.
‘At times, the wife may not be aware of the military traditions. Also, some wives become jealous because we act like virtual shadows of the officers. They think we are interfering in the lives of their husbands.
‘We are also asked to polish the shoes of the children and do other household work.’
Defence Minister A.K. Antony appears to be aware of the problem.
On Wednesday, at the Defence Investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, when he was asked about the batmen, he replied that ‘many things’ needed to be sorted out but that changes cannot come overnight. Antony also told the army brass at the just-concluded combined conference of commanders here that officers must respect the ‘jawans’.
But said an army officer: ‘We don’t ill-treat the sahayaks, who are also combatants. But they are needed to do many official work.’
Although PBORs or Personnel Below Officer Rank in the Indian Air Force are not deployed as sahayaks, they face other problems.
‘We cannot wear the poor quality uniform provided to us and are forced to buy them. Why can’t we get a uniform allowance like the officers?’ asked a sergeant.
‘We are also shortchanged on promotions. While the violation of seniority among the top ranks makes news, the supersession of a PBOR with 20 years of service by a young soldier goes unnoticed,’ he added.
It is not that the armed forces are ignorant about the simmering discontent.
Indeed, psychologists have found that abusive language and perceived humiliation by superiors are among the precipitating factors leading to suicides and killings in the army.

India’s army officers are in for a culture shock and more. A vestige of the colonial army — the sahayak (personal orderly) system — has to be disbanded with defence minister A.K. Antony insisting that more pay and perks will follow if soldiers are treated with dignity.
But the minister and the government are asking the army to take a decision for themselves.
Antony believes the system is an anachronism in these times — much like hand-pulled rickshaws on Calcutta’s streets — when recruits into the army are better educated and, therefore, have a greater sense of self-esteem than their predecessors.

I am staying in a army colony, Everyday I see how badly they treat their SAHAYAK(Orderly). They(Orderly) are forced to do all the dirty works, everything I mean which a servent maid will refuse to do....
They don't get anything in return...Officers n thier wives use abusive language( which they think its their right)...
Officer's Dog has better status than our great indian army soldier...

The sahayak system prevalent in the 1.13-million strong Army (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Army_officers_set_to_lose_batmen/articleshow/3625756.cms#) is ‘‘a shameful practice’’, which ‘‘should have no place in Independent India’’, holds the latest report of the parliamentary standing committee on defence. In tune with what many believe is a vestige of the colonial era and an anachronism for any modern Army, especially since fresh recruits are now better educated unlike yesteryears, the committee urged the defence ministry to abolish the sahayak system with immediate effect.

I've heard about this and also long back a close relative told me about the way these Batmen are treated rather badly insulted and forced to do all menial jobs at the officer's home.

The official purpose is defeated and the personal misusage of manpower starts:o

Mere Bhai Chhikara,,,,,,aajkaal saari public fauzi afsara(Officers) ke paachhe laag rhi se,,,,

Just read between lines"Anthony saying that more pay & perks will follow if Jawans are treated with dignity",,,,,,,to bhai understand it, this is all mind game and propaganda by these politicians and beurocrats because when three defence chiefs started asking for more pays and also better retirement packages for its troops(as they retire at the age of 35-36 yrs age), now Defence minister is putting and trying to play a bargaining tactics.

If Defence Minister knows that Jawans are not being treated nicely, then who stops him from implementing the policy and procedures to stop this bad practice, who stops him for doing so, why he is saying that pay will be more if officers treat their jawans well. This is all because they want to create a rift among different ranks and files of the defence forces.

Let me tell you if Anthony reals wants to stop the misuse of man power then he can do so very easily, defence is the such organization where rules are implemented and followed if some one at the top really wants to implement. No body can dare challenge that order of Defence Minister.

Dont make judgement on media reports, that some one was saying at the condition of anonymity, if army officers are asked, they will also come out with so many colorful stories about these politicians and baabus.

Every body is suffering in defence forces not only Jawans.

The so called batman(now termed as Sahayaks) are not for the personal work of officers and their families. They have been authorised keeping some reasons in mind and they have some soldierly duties to perform. They have some specific roles to play.

If some officers are misusing it then it should be stoped. So the solution lies in stopping the misuse rather than taking it back.

Why the ministers/civil officers have a driver(official one), cant the officer or minister drive the vehicle themselves, they are given this facility because they have some other important functions to do, and same is applicable for Defence Officers.

Aur bhai civil servents ke paas kya kya taam-jhaam hota hai,,,,,no body is talking,,,,,they have laangri, driver, gunmen, sweeper and everything what they can think of:rock

Aapni civilians ki galti konya bhai,,,,,,hum to Fauzion ko tabhi yaad karte hain jab Kargil jaisi koyi ghatna ho jaaye:rock,,,,,,jab Fauz pisse maange to pher sabne bhoondi laagan laag jyaa se,,,,,,,,,
Ye apne Defence Ministers, army ke paas kaun kaunse equipment ki shortage hai uske baare mein kyon nahi sochte aur action lete, Man Power ka misuse rokna to defence Minister ke PA ka baayen haath ka khel hai:rock,,,,Anthony ki to jarurat bhi na pade man power misuse control karan mein

Kuchh hain aise officers jo misuse karte hain,,,lekin iska matlab ye nahi ki sabhi karte hain,,,,there are officers who takes care of these sahayaks as their own family members,,,,,vo baat shayad aapko pata bhi nahi hongi,,,,,generally bad things are highlighted more,,,,aur vo bhi Fauz ki,,,,,Kyunki Fauz is Desh ke Upar shayad ek bahut bada Bojh(Burden hai):rock:boxing

Every thing is in the hands of politicians and beurocrats, they can publish whatever reports they want to publish agains indian army officers, indian army jawans, indian army performances etc etc, but our politicians and beurocrats they are great, they are savior of this nation, they should be worshiped :)

Bhai free ka naukar na to koyi Jawan hai aur na hi koyi unhe samjhta hai,,,,,Kuchh black sheeps har jagah hote hain jo mahaul kharab karte hain,,,

Mere kahne ka bhi matlab samjho, ki Defence Minister itni chhoti si baat jo ki uske liye bahut hi easy kaam hai, isko kyon media mein highlight kar raha hai, It would have been good on his part if he had sent a strict circular about this bad practice in army and would have stated that any violation will attract serious penalty. Let me tell you no body in Defence Forces would have challenged this decision of Defence Minister in Army. To stop manpower misuse is very very very easy thing for him and Anthony should not have waited for 4.5 years to realise this misuse, if he had gone in to details he would have come to know much earlier, lekin is lungi aale ne itni fursat kit se bhai.

AK Anthony is raising this point at the time when three defence chiefs are asking for the rights of officers and Jawans. And now these politicians want to creat a rift up thats why raking such issues. Other wise he would have not waited for so long and from day one he would have controlled the misuse of man power.

What I want to convey is that these politicians play a dirty game to keep their hand up:rockto bhai in politicians ki bhasha aur intention ko samjho, main to chahta hun ki koyi aap jaisa bhai aage aaye aur desh ka defence minister bane.

The other thing, Defence Officers are not silky or chocolate cream soldiers:), they undergo a very regrous training schedule and share the same physical hardships during field tenures. And mentally they are expected to be much sharper and stronger, they are also held accountable for misdeeds of their Jawans whom they command.
