You must have heard a lot of news surrounding MNP or Mobile Number Portability. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has finally fixed the various charges for Mobile Number Portability in India and the TRAI (http://www.trai.gov.in/)press release is below. If you are still wondering what does MNP mean to you read further.

Are you sticking to the same Operator for many years just for the fancy mobile number you possess despite the poor network coverage in your area ?
Do plans from another Operator seem more affordable / attractive to you compared to the current operator ?
Are you a Technology enthusiast and want to figure out whats MNP ?

If you said to any one of the questions above then you might make use of MNP to move to another mobile network operator and retain your same old mobile number. Now lets get to the charges.
You have to pay a porting charge to port your mobile number from one network to another.
This fee has been fixed at Rs.19 only. TRAI has indicated that

The amount to be paid by the subscriber shall not be more than the per port transaction charge i.e. Rs.19. Operators are free to charge any amount less than or equal to this charge
These charges will come into effect on 31st December and MNP is expected to be available in Metros and Category A circles by this date. It is expected to be available in other circles by March.
Are you interested in MNP ? Will you use the service ?

It seems that TRAI have to enhance the time limit for MNP, as MTNL and BSNL denied that it is not possible to impliment MNP ( Mobile Number Portability) till Dec 31 however the TRAI chairman has said to take action in case if companies failed to meet deadline. See the latest new
No portability before April: BSNL, MTNL

New Delhi: Both BSNL and MTNL are set to miss the mobile number portability (MNP) deadline of December 31. The state-run telcos have informed the government that they will not be able to implement the system before April for a variety of reasons such as lack of time to tweak the technology, tariff plans and billing among others.
While MTNL said its fixed line network being a legacy network requires a lot of time, effort and cost to upgrade it to make it MNP-compliant, BSNL cited a slew of impediments, ranging from lack of a draft interconnect agreement to the issues regarding tariffs for off-net and on-net, as its network will not support differential charging.
The government had set a December 31 deadline for implementing the MNP regime for the metros and June 2010 for the non-metros. Last week PM Manmohan Singh had said that the MNP — the facility that allows customers to change their operator but retain their mobile number — would be implemented early next year. It is expected that MNP will force operators to improve the quality of their services.
Trai chairman J S Sarma said the operators should try to implement the facility within the deadline lest they be labelled as anti-consumer.
