Cricket legend Brian Lara, is of the view that cricket is a dying sport and that it is the Twenty20 format of the game that will give it a new lease in life by reviving spectator interest in it.
Former Pakistani international batsman Javed Miandad warned lucrative Twenty20 leagues were a virus which threatened to kill off Test cricket.the lure of twenty20 is such that the number of test playing countries could reduce to just three or four while international T20 sides could double in five years time.

twenty20 could sound the death knell for test cricket but it could also prove to be the perfect vehicle for the expansion of the game into other countries. the shorter the game, the greater the leveler and twenty20 is an excellent pathway into the elite fold… just think of the fairy-tale qualification of afghanistan for next year's world twenty20.

the next big step will be the growth of cricket in the united states and it's not unrealistic to think there could be 20 countries capable of playing competitive twenty20 cricket within the next five years – surely something to celebrate or is it going to be a mess ???

with the introduction of twenty20 leagues, the notion that 'country comes first' is also hit for six because when there is a choice between national duty and more money, players might choose money. also, not to forget the opportunity it will provide to the upcoming talent, who would have never seen the stage in international arena.

furthermore do you think that IPL will keep its identity as biggest cricket league, once the sport gains popularity in other hitherto non-playing cricketing countries ?

please share your views… also vis-Ã*-vis recent modi/tharoor fiasco. guess, modi grew too big for his shoes, and was slapped befittingly. the game is now a big money spinner with big corporate in to it at the same time our crooked politicians/political parties are also eyeing to make hay while the sun shines.

20-20 is the future of cricket. reasons are simple. Its fast, more fascinating. Soccer replaced Cricket in England because of same reasons.. History is repeating itself.

look at the two quoted statements... lara is wary of cricket dying in windies nd miandad is lamenting his past as to why this format didn't started during his time. both have their own interpreted reasons. pakis are somewhat like cast-offs, as no ipl league team bidding for them. so much money around nd nothing for them.

this format also gives a squeeze of life to aging cricketers. retire at 35, nd you have another 5 years until 40 to show your worth. look at dravid now, he is also scoring 30 runs of 15 balls.

the format will surely change the way cricket has been until now. for good or for bad ?

BPT bhaisaab, T20 is a revolution to revive dying cricket spirit due to dull/long and boring matches. T20 has brought revolutionary changes to the way cricket was played prior to it. It has created more interest in people for cricket for sure.

It is being said continuosly that it is a curse for bowlers, but don't the bowlers see a chance in innovating new deliveries and new techniques to get a batsman Out? Slowere bouncer is one of the inventions of T20 which is a very handy weapon for bowlers. Bowlers have started bowling more yorkers which were not used so commonly earlier. They have become more disciplined now. In a way it has benefitted the game of cricket in a lot of ways. It earned the game more spectators, more money and more opportunities for young players who usually would have gone unnoticed during their domestic seasons.

IMO One-Day cricket is facing the maximum danger from T20. It might just fade away with T20 gaining so much popularity. Test cricket is the real test of abilities of a player and is backed by every one, so it is going to stay here for sure.I don't see Test cricket getting obsolete beacuse of T20. Rather it has/will lead to more result oriented test matches (which infact has started happening after T20 has begun). Look at the RR of the teams in test matches. It hovers around 4 runs per over, whereas just few years back it would have hardly crossed 3! Test cricket means scoring heavy runs to put the opposition under pressure of a huge score. The more quickly you score them, more time you get to dismiss the other team.
T20 has brought that change to test cricket. They have turned from dull matches to some very interesting matches. Recently concluded England-SA series tells the real story. Every test match was a nail-biter. Matches went to last ball 2 out of 4 times. What else a spectator wants from cricket?

PS : I voted for T20 threat to One-Day cricket.

1. there bellies are stuffed with millions from IPL... where is the fire ? no national pride.

2. the whole team is a bunch of nincompoops nd retards... good for notjing !

3. a series of wrong judgments by dhoni. we got best batsman on cards, but all fell like peck of cards. india would have been gfar better playing 1st in both their super8 matches against oz nd windies.

4. why the hell are we playing this moron... jadeja ?

5. indian team is a a great piss-off nd so are all those millions cricket frenzied induians

Sri Lanka have also been thrashed nicely, so now the equation is if India defeat Sri Lanka with a good margin and on the other hand Australia defeat WI with a good margin (which is highly possible), then India will be in Semis. May it happen so...Amen...However chances are really nil...

T20 is good for the future of Cricket. The shortest format (T20) may bring new possibilites to spread it across the globe. USA, Canada, Ireland, Afganistan, Hongkong etc are the letest examples. There are some talks that China is preparing to enter into Cricket scenario and as usual China is putting a lot of efforts to learn and master the art of playing Cricket. Chinese always comes with a surprize and chinese will certainly start with a bang someday.

The shorter version also makes it eligible for its inclusion in tournaments like Commonwealth, Olympics etc. If USA and China enters into this arena it will make a deep impact at world level.

There is no threat to Test Cricket from T20 but yes One day cricket may feel some heat from it. Few years back an ODI series of 5 or 7 matches used to happen but nowdays its always like 3 ODI and 2 T20.

Two major Achievement of IPL :

IPL is best stage for the new talent to get limelight. Domestic cricket is hardly watched anywhere but IPL have worldwide viewers. You can easily see the outstanding performance in T20/IPL of players securing their place in the National Teams. Shane watson, Shane Marsh, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, Pollard etc are just a few name to mention from the long list.

Secondly, IPL changed the interaction level among the players from different countries. They share their dressing room with players from diferent countries and develop some understanding and respect. Now, most of the players are not hostile when they play against each other from their respective National Teams. That's true professionalism and sportsman spirit.

Remember the 2007 Indian tour of Australia. Those kinds of things are unlikely to happen after IPL.

4. why the hell are we playing this moron... jadeja ?

I failed to understand his inclusion series after series. We lost two One day matches against Australia because this guy gifted his wicket as suicidal run out at the crucial times. He didn't learnt anything from that and repeating that immtureness every now and then.

If people want to talk about his good performance in one or two matches then its obvious that if you keep playing again and again ... some day you will get a good day. He is just a part time bowler who may have a odd good day and players like Sehwag, Yuvraj and Raina seems better than him as bowlers. He is pathitic as a batsman and Harbhajan, Praveen Kumar are better than him and it was clearly evident from tha last match againt WI when Harbhajan came ahead of Jadeja to bat.

2. the whole team is a bunch of nincompoops nd retards... good for notjing !

It maybe a slam bang version of Cricket but still you need players with good a TTT (Temperament, Technique and Timing).

I wonder how much Indian Team missed Sehwag. I am not saying that Sehwag could have win those matches but he nicely set up the match for India in first few overs and that's the real advantage in Any format of Cricket.

[FONT=Century Gothic][COLOR=#0000ff]3. a series of wrong judgments by dhoni. we got best batsman on cards, but all fell like peck of cards. india would have been gfar better playing 1st in both their super8 matches against oz nd windies.

Playing with 8 batsmen in the team (including this bull$hit Jadeja) and still choosing to field first!! He talks about moisture in the pitch and handsover the first over to Harbhajan. Though he bowled really well in both the matches, against Aus and WI, he could have been used more diligently during middle overs. Moisture means help to seamers, but here bhajji bowled much better than zaheer and nehra.

4. why the hell are we playing this moron... jadeja ?

Unimaginable, after this bowler was blasted for 38 runs in his two overs in last match. He always paves way for a defeat to India whenever it is a must win situation. World cup 2009, against england this player scored 25 off 35 in a T20 game! Yesterday he dropped a catch and misfielded to give away runs. On top of that gave the batsmen luxury to hit him during his two over spell which costed India 27 runs.. Gosh, m fed up of his selection time and again in the team, by calling him so called bowling allrounder!!

correctly said !!!... the biggest casualty of this format is going to be 50-50 format. there is no doubt that this format has given cricket game a new lease of life and would be the future of cricket.

i think a lot of improvisations are still required in this format games nd tournaments to make it more meaningful. i wouldn't rate any winning team as a champion in this format. one bad day or one bad game nd all your effors are brought to naught. a recent example in IPL was bombay team. despite of showing the best performance throughout the tournament they failed on holding their nerves on the "D" day.

same holds true for icc twenty20 tournaments so far. india won the 1st, pakis the 2nd nd in this 3rd one too it can be any body's game in the finals. i guess, something on the lines of soccer english premier league (or even IPL) should be the format for twenty20 tournaments as well. all teams must play amongst each other and the finals should be best of three games to decide the champion team.

Predictable and quite telling since in the shortest T-20 format (and quite likely the future of International cricket too, I would have to say!) this has been the second successful damning outing at the world stage (for the winners of the opening cup), and quite eerily a slide ever since the IPL started at home!...

The most surprising retort I have ever heard from Dhoni after the complete routing at the hands of pretty much all teams was his post match, post tournament, (post Indian Cricket?) was, "At the end of the day we are on the losing side, nothing much can be done about it because this is the best 15 [players] you can get in India when it comes to T20. At the end of the day if you are outplayed there is nothing much you can do about it." !???!....

"Most of us have the problem of playing short-pitched balls. So it is not just the youngsters who had problems. We can't neglect it any more. But we don't have bowlers who consistently bowl at 145-50 kph and most of wickets in India don't have that kind of bounce," he said… wow! Profound words those, now we can really forgive them for the sub-below-par performance!

For these IPL stars this must be quite telling as to the level of that glamorous, slush with money, dazzling tourney at home that everyone has been so ga-ga about!

Anyways, here’s a cartoon that says it all in my mind….

you should have shown a doggie raising his leg nd pissing on the feet of yr caricature.

nd not to forget that india's exit cannot be attributed to bowlers. imo bowlers did their job reasonably well... it were our batsman who pissed in their pents while making the chase.

no team is champion in this format. it all depends upon your dedication, professionalism, never say die attitude nd holding to your nerves till the last ball.

not to forget the will to do it nd what happens on the "D" day.

no one could have expected in wildest of dreams that england will win it. they did it and won the 1st ever major tournament comprehensively by thrashing the best team... oz.

... interesting format indeed !
