what had been main profession of our jat ancestors? Is it farming?

When I was a child I used to think that all JATs are farmers from the time immemorial. I used to think like that as i am son of a farmer, although my grandfather was a freedom fighter but he was also actively involved in agriculture and I have heard from old tau tai and grandmother that our ancestors had been farmers. They people were illiterate and didn't know enough history of the community. Now when I have got a platform where big players of our community sit, i can get clear idea as to profession of our ancestors.

I want to know whether agriculture had been our main profession leaving other businesses which were run as a side businesses. Here, on Jat land..Big players and researchers of the community can give strong explanation.

जाटों के विषय मे सर्वप्रथम गुप्त काल मे जानकारी मिलती है | बौध दार्शनिक चंद्रगोमिन लिखते हैं , जर्ट हुना अजयत | यानि जाटों ने हूणों को पराजित किया | गुप्त सम्राट स्कंदगुप्त की सेना मे जाटों की एक रेजिमेंट थी | कुछ विद्वान गुप्तो को जाट बताते हैं | इस काल मे सभी वर्णों के लोग पशुपालन तथा खेती कर सकते थे | यानि अगर चार भाइयो मे से दो सेना मे भर्ती हो पाए तो बाकि दो भाई खेती कर सकते थे | जाट पशुपालन व खेती कर लेते थे | कृषि व पशुपालन वैश्य का कार्य माना जाता था ,परन्तु ब्राह्मिन ने ये कहा की अगर कोई काम न मिल पाए तो नीचे के वर्ण का कार्य किया जा सकता था |इसलिए जाटों ने क्षत्रिय होते हुए भी वैश्य का काम किया | लेकिन जाटों मे अनेक शासक भी थे ,किक्कान के जाटों की शूरवीरता कौन नहीं जानता उन्होंने बार बार अरबो को परास्त किया ,ये कृषि - पशुपालन के साथ साथ लूटपाट भी किया |क्योंकि ये वहा शासक थे और अन्य सेनाओ हरा कर को लूट लेते थे|लेकिन आगे चलकर जाटों ने भारत मे अनेक रियासते बना ली |१८ वी सदी के बाद जाट राजा , महाराजा ,जमींदार माने जाते थे | आज जो किसान है वो कल जमींदार थे |[पूर्वी राजस्थान को छोडकर ]

Not all agriculturists have been Jats. Neither have all soldiers been Jats. I too would like to get response on this interesting issue from well informed people who can clarify points if raised.
