There are two cereals Oat and Rye. Does anybody know about them? Are any of these used as staple food in north part of India? If yes, what are their local names?
To me oat seems jai (जई) but that is used for fodder not food

A article on the origin and cultivation regions of cereal (rye + oat)
http://nsdl.niscair.res.in/bitstream/123456789/125/1/corrected+Origin_of_crop_plants_cereals_and_pulses .pdf

From what I have read on the internet, both are grown in cold climate (temperate regions) and are used for human consumption in those regions. In India, however, they seem to be mostly used for fodder, especially Oat.

Somebody more knowledgeable in this area can probabbly add.

Yes, rye is used in pickles.
These days in India one can get Oats for use as breakfast cereal. I think they are marketed as Quaker Oats.

Urmila ji,

The "Rye" used in pickles and RAYTA is different, thats an oilseed.

Rye used in bread is some cereal, a typical grass family plant.

Sumit ji, I know about deshi "rye" and it is a spice not staple food. It is very pungent in taste. You can't make bread from it.

That's right. Rye "राई" which we use in pickles and for cooking (mostly in south India) is a type of mustard seed. Small size mustard, I think.

The English "Rye" seed is like wheat. Wheat, Barley, Oat (जौं) and Rye look similar.

Rye (Secale cereale) is a grass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poaceae) grown extensively as a grain and as a forage crop. It is a member of the wheat tribe (Triticeae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triticeae)) and is closely related tobarley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barley) and wheat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat). Rye grain is used for flour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flour), rye bread (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rye_bread), rye beer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rye_beer), some whiskeys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rye_whiskey), some vodkas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vodka), and animal fodder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fodder). It can also be eaten whole, either as boiled rye berries, or by being rolled, similar to rolled oats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolled_oats).
Rye is a cereal grain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cereal) and should not be confused with ryegrass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryegrass), which is used for lawns, pasture, and hay for livestock.

Because media and business houses (importing oats/rye products) benefit from each other.

Yes that seems the real intention Urmila. Or our media just copy paste from foreign media. But I think barley and oat are two different things, as per USDA (United States Department of Agriculture (http://www.usda.gov/)) India is ranked in top 20 producer of barley but ranked nowhere in case of oat.

This is a big problem in India - copying. Why don't they emphasise/reward originality? Any idea/s?
