Captain Vikram Batra, 13 JAK Rifles, and his Delta Company was given the task of recapturing Point 5140. Nick-named Sher Shah for his unstinting courage, he decided to lead the attack from the rear as an element of surprise would help stupefy the enemy. He & his men ascended the sheer rock-cliff and as the group neared the top, the enemy opened machine gun fire on them, pinning them on to the face of the bare rocky cliff. Captain Batra along with five of his men climbed on regardless and after reaching the top, hurled two grenades at the machine gun post. He single handedly engaged three enemy soldiers in close combat and killed them. He was seriously injured during this combat, but insisted on regrouping his men to continue with the given task at hand. Inspired by the extraordinary courage displayed by Captain Batra, the soldiers of 13 JAK Rifles charged the enemy position and captured Point 5140 at 3:30 a.m. on 20 June 1999. His company is credited with killing at least 8 Pakistani soldiers and recovering a heavy machine gun.

The capture of Point 5140 set in motion a string of successes like Point 5100, Point 4700, Junction Peak and Three Pimples. Captain Batra led his men to even more glorious victories with the recapture of Point 4750 and Point 4875. While dragging Lt. Naveen back under cover, Naveen pleaded to Captain Batra to let him continue the fight in spite the injuries to which Captain Batra replied "Tu baal bachedaar hai!! Hatt jaa peeche," ("You have kids and wife to look after! Get back!").He was killed at Point 4875 in the early morning hours of 7 July 1999 by a sniper fire from a Dragunov Rifle and a subsequent explosion from an RPG. . His last words were, "Jai Mata Di"(which means in English 'Hail the Divine Mother'). For his sustained display of the most conspicuous personal bravery and junior leadership of the highest order in the face of the enemy, Captain Vikram Batra was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest medal for gallantry, posthumously. His father, Mr. G.L. Batra, received the award from the President of India, on behalf of his brave son

Dear Friends, Read this..... Each line will touch your heart...... Sure this will make you sit up ..... You take a warm shower to help you wake up. He goes days or weeks without running water You complain of a 'headache', and call in sick. He gets shot at as others are hit, and keeps moving forward. You put on your anti war/don't support the troops shirt, and go meet up with your friends. He still fights for your right to wear that shirt. You talk trash about your 'buddies' that aren't with you. He knows he may not see some of his buddies again. You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls. He patrols the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists. You complain about how hot it is. He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow. You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong. He doesn't get to eat today. Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes. He wears the same things for weeks, but makes sure his weapons are clean. You go to the mall and get your hair redone. He doesn't have time to brush his teeth today. You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over. He's told he will be held over an extra 2 months. You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday. He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume. You roll your eyes as a baby cries. He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they'll ever meet. You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything. He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own people and remembers why he is fighting. You see only what the media wants you to see. He sees the broken bodies lying around him. You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't. He does exactly what he is told even if it puts his life in danger. You crawl into your soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable. He tries to sleep but gets woken by mortars and helicopters all night long. "Be greatful that you dont have evrything you want ..that means you still have the opportunity of being happier tomorrow then you are today....... " Country Comes first always and everytime... Jai Hind

the sacredness, essence and virtue of this post will disappear as soon as it will stick on the wall of any govt. office. mandir ka diya kisi gande naale mein nai lagaya jaata. govt. officials are blood suckers and infact a disgrace for the nation. govt. officials please don't be angry. whenever a quote is made, it is made on the basis of the maximums.
anyways, gaurav, your post just touched my soul. really divine. army personals are extraordinary people. a composition of divine qualities. nobody can rive them. better to worship. but it is the misery of our great nation that these great people didn't even get the best ration, shoes and clothes etc. i have seen a report on star news channel, about the low quality wheat and pulses supplied to the army. also, got surprise to find that nobody neither the media nor public made any hue or cry over the issue. garv se kaho hum hindustani hai. really disgusted.
