View Full Version : On what basis you take a stand on any discussion at JL?

It has been more than 6 years when I joined Jatland, have seen many members go, new members come and this cylce continues. I have seen members commenting on several issues and taking stand in discussions. Noticed also that some issues are ignored completely and some are over discussed. A community related, national ineterest issue goes untouched and tricky issues are discussed endlessly. A thought just came into my mind (if I have some) :) that what is the thing which makes Jatlanders to take a stand on any issue/discussion (in support or against)? Issues range from community to national level and even international level. There are few which I can list:

1. Your political affiliations
2. Your knowledge of subject and intelligence
3. Influenced by your friends online/offline

You all are welcome to add more.

Many times, it is my personal experience on the issue being discussed.

Few that comes to my mind....
- Current happenings of fundamental importance, directly or indirectly, impacting the community.
- Participation on threads depends a lot on how the discussions are going on (and sometimes who all are participating, it indirectly reflects the seriousness of the thread).
- How lively the subject matter is, recent example eg Hisar election, Anna movement, etc.
- For creativity, humor, networking.
- For broadening understanding as we get to learn a lot from other members experiences and views.

I also think that just as in real life, where men and women come together, the issues mostly discussed with each other depend on one's personal liking and not necessarily on what is politically relevant for the country or what should be done to tackle social problems etc. Mostly, social interaction hovers around light talk and maybe once in a while on heavy, deep thinking stuff - which is what happens on JL too. The things/topics that one thinks are irrelevant to national interests/community problems etc, but are popular items for discussion are actually very important for keeping the community together and keeping the this community place thriving, enjoyable and alive. Calling such discussions irrelevant to the development of the community is, I think, not correct.

I think there are multiple factors which contirbute for a person to make him participate in the discussion. First and the most important is the knowledge and awareness on the issue being discussed. Sometimes, even if the posts are interesting but lack of the knowledge in that area holds back a member to participate. Sometimes people participate to just set their personal rants against somebody, but the ratio is quite low.

4. Personal grudge = 10%
5. Nostalgia = 20%

Dear Jatlanders.

RAM RAM,

I have always kept the following in mind while posting or participating:

1. Contribute positively to a subject that I think I know about. I have never felt it necessary to comment on every subject.

2. Think before commenting. If a member disagrees with me, I will try and give my point of view or clarify a comment one more time.

3. Never got personal.

4. Give equal respect to all genders.

5. Try and share my knowledge and experience for whatever worth it is.

6. Never commenting on anyone’s character, social status or educational background.

7. Never being a know all. One can learn from everyone; elders and youngsters.

With regards,

JS Malik

Thank you Krishan Ji. My intention was to get this type of information. For me, personal grudges and political affiliations are higher than what you have calculated.

Here, political affiliations, personal grudge and influence of friends makes more than 50%. Does that mean we do not actually look at what is being said?

Mostly, we look at who is saying and about whom it is being said. Does this attitude hit the quality of our discussions?

Fully agree. I have experienced people being part of a group and when their situation demands, these groupies gang up on one person (even if it is a woman) for verbal bashings.

I have been active since last few months, so my personal experience is very limited as compared to you.

Yes most of us see and judge the topic though glass of prejudice and comment accordingly, and it definitely degrades the quality of discussion.
