With London Olympics, the mega sporting event, just round the corner, let us create a platform where we can share info and discuss about it before, during and after the Games.Much to watch out for India in general and Jat community in particular. We are going there with an excellent overall contingent, both quality and quantity wise and lets see how the success of Beijing Olympics has affected our sports and its players and can we go one step further after breaking the jinx.

Let me start out with participation first.Gathered this info from some other source on the net and is nicely compiled.Might not be up to date and might be apocryphal as well. That's where we all have to chip in.

So LONDON,here we come

Update on Swimming:-

TOI-In an astonishing turn of events late on Friday night, world swimming body FINA awarded Gagan AP Ullalmath of Karnataka a berth in the 1500m freestyle event at the London Olympics under the 'Universality' quota, thereby slamming the door on Virdhawal Khade, Sandeep Sejwal, Aaron D'Souza and Saurabh Sangvekar, who qualified under Olympic Selection Time (OST) criterion or the 'B' standard mark.

Swimming Federation of India's CEO Virendra Nanavati added: "Under the Universality criterion only those swimmers who have not qualified under the 'A' or 'B' category are picked. So even though we might want to send our best swimmer, we are bound by the rules."

In a compromise formula worked out by AITA, Paes was forced to play with 206-ranked Vishnu Vardhan in the men's doubles event against his wishes and was paired with Sania in the mixed section.
The two wild card entries meant India will be fielding its largest ever tennis contingent in the Olympics.

Ending weeks of speculations, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced on Sunday that Sushil Kumar would be India’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics on July 27.

While Abhinav Bindra was the first choice for IOA, it wasn’t possible with his 10m air rifle event scheduled for July 30. He was reluctant to do the honours for close to six hours as that could lead to some injury ahead of his event.

The association was left with three names: Vijender Singh, Leander Paes and Sushil Kumar. The problem with Vijender was similar to that with Abhinav Bindra, while Paes’ case was different — he had led the Indian contingent in Sydney.

Just watched Vijender's bout. He defeated the Kazaki 14-10 to go into round of 16. Was ahead in all rounds. It was a bit close, but Vijender was the better fighter in all rounds. Now he is going to face American Gausha Terrell on Thursday. This guy is very dangerous. I watched his bout against an Armenian guy. The Armenian was ahead throughout on points, but the American came right in the end with punches that knocked out the Armenian. Vijender needs to play really well to defeat this American, who is very fast both on feet and arm speed.

I am going to watch this fight live in the arena, will be cheering big time for Vijender and India!

Came across the contribution of Indian Origin artist Anish Kapoor(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anish_Kapoor) into the London Olympics. Anish designed an orbit which is closer to the Olympic park gives its visitors a stunning view of Olympic park. Great masterpiece of art and design.

http://www.london2012.com/news/articles/orbit-opens-today-for-spectacular-views-over-the-olympic-park-1306237.html

The Orbit, a work of art as well as a viewing platform over the Olympic Park, has opened to visitors. With the Games now underway, access to the Orbit offers stunning views over the Olympic Stadium, Olympic Park and the whole of London.

The Orbit is more than a work of art – it’s an entire experience. After going through the small, intimate entrance to the Orbit, visitors make their way into an elevator with viewing portholes, which takes just 30 seconds to pass through the Orbit’s twisting form and reach the viewing platform 85 metres high.

Once it’s reached the platform, visitors can step outside the lift and experience the Olympic Park in a whole new light – as well as enjoying stunning views of London’s cityscape. It’s also possible to look straight down the centre of the Orbit to the ground below – though this isn’t recommended for the fainthearted!

To conclude the experience, visitors are encouraged to stroll down the spiral staircase that twists through the Orbit, enjoying even more amazing sights.

A limited number of tickets are available for the Orbit during the Olympic Games – they must be purchased in advance at
www.tickets.london2012.com (http://www.tickets.london2012.com/)
and you must also have a ticket giving access to the Olympic Park. There is good availability of Orbit tickets during the Paralympic Games.

After the Games, the Orbit will close and re-open in late 2013, when it will give even more visitors the opportunity to experience it.

Standing 115 metres high, the Orbit is the tallest art structure in Britain. The search for a permanent artwork on the Olympic Park was instigated by the Mayor of London’s Office, which invited more than 30 international artists to submit their ideas for a sculpture of up to 180 metres tall.

Following a lengthy selection process, the Orbit – designed by internationally acclaimed artist Anish Kapoor – was chosen. As well as promising a unique moment and experience for visitors, the spiralling red structure successfully represented both London and the UK, and was reflective of the five Olympic rings.

Construction of the Orbit started in November 2010, and was completed by April 2012.

Australia ke to ghane medal khoo ge swimming pool me. 'Weapon of Mass destruction' bhi the in dhorey , pool me thande hoge :) .
China levega baaadhe ser saare medal.

Try this from BBC. Not for Indians specifically. But they have a lot of sports on live simultaneously. Not sure it works outside UK.

You can find out the time for every Indian athlete competing on any given day here:

I did, as you said because I thought it was inappropriate. We all know what we were talking about but probably didn't realize there are ladies around here. Anyway more important than reporting is for all of us to understand that it was inappropriate and distasteful.

Out of curiosity
I was going thru official site for London Olympics -----

Just wanna see----How many participants---their intro

I got many name n profile listed under the tab- All Athletes
Concern is I could not find Vijendar's name , Sumit Sangwan , Nehwal was not there

As per my observation , official sites has all info on all participants -sort of small intro

last I checked was of Euro Cup 2012- it has some info of every player

This is the first time - i m checking Olympics web has anyone tried this before-----

Is it just some mistake---or some sort of reasoning is there

If any of the folks wanna check out:

How does Country Ranking decided-----

on the basis of count of medals G + S + B

or just specifically Gold Medals.

1- If I consider count of all the medals then France should be at better rank comparing to Republic of korea

2- It seems first criteria is Number of Gold medals- in case of tie total count is considered

just guessing folks------

It is easier said than done. There are hardly any facilities/infrastructure built in towns to support sports. Let me give a some quick examples.
Up until 5-6 years ago, there was only 1 synthetic athletic track in Haryana (in Giri center sports complex in HAU Hisar). I don't know whether this number has increased or not now. AFAIK, There were only 2 Astro Turfs available for Hockey. One in Shahbad, where Hockey nursery is, second was in Gurgaon (not 100% on this one). Chautala govt. sanctioned few acres of land for a new Astro Turf to be built in Hisar but as usual it got stuck in the vicious loop of politics and the place is still a pasture for cattle. There was a swimming pool in HAU too which I have never seen filled with clean water in my lifetime.
Sarkar baat to karegi ki 2 crore de denge, 3 crore de denge medal aaya to. par medal aave kit te ? agar yo prize money kuchh sports infrastructure develop karan pe kharch ho to medal door nahi. manne to laage hai jo ye medal aave hain inme bhi tukkaa ae laag jya se. va kahavat hai na - aandhey ki maakhi, raam udaave.

I once had a heated argument on Cricket and Soccer

My cousin was Cricket fan and I prefer Soccer .

He has made some very logical and valid point . BCCI is a private organisation and so is of Soccer and hockey n other games .

Cricket match-----they win they get money----they spend on their grounds ----sports kit ---fitness n like that.

Other games can try same .

2nd point-------never ever blame cricketers being rich------they play good-----win----get winning money ----
thus endorsement.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Board_of_Control_for_Cricket_in_India.

Govt can maintain grounds -agreed. But how come all cricket grounds are maintained not soccer ones .

Govt can not be partial---------some special grant which they offer on winning medals is something different

Please Note : Sports bill is something different which apply to all kind of sports equally , money that cricket is making whole sole their own---match winning money

india did play international soccer --------and is contending for FIFA 2014 Brazil

boss my curiosity is Cricket-hockey-soccer----they all had one initial stage

how come cricket touched the heights not other sports

and if we already have so many clubs-------then why we are blaming govt

Clubs are private------play----win-----n make money

n to be honest i do not see national games----I prefer international

cricket ne bhi toh shurru kiya hoga kahin se-------

even they need grounds-----n all sports jazz like other sports

n they managed-----n managed gr8------

I may be wrong-------I have never seen India playing international soccer ( my bad I may have missed their match)

I once saw hockey------again may be just my perception-----I din't find that Zeal the other team has-----be it winning or loosing

I still remember Euro finals - Spain Vs Italy----Spain is a Champ won last FIFA and Italy can not even stand in front of them . All knew winner would be Spain , but italy tried quite hard . Even then when Italy lost----they were crying like anything( as they missed one life time chance ) ---it was already a big deal playing finals , pretty much obvious they gonna loose as contending against Spain

I have this theory------if you would take defeat to ur heart only then u can win next deal ------else BAU .
And that what I thought other games missing------u have to take defeat at ur heart------keep in deep in ur heart-----then take it all out in the fields .
For other games its like----- BAU-----at least we participated-----we did good-----typical sportsmanship ideology .

I just saw some Indian coach speech at Olympics regarding some player lost the game -----and he was saying----we did good n all that jazz.

Helllllllllllllll noooooooooooo-if we would have done good we would be playing next match not taking a flight back to India

One has to win----------n thats it .

In which Soccer cups does india play?

India already have various club like Dempo,Mohan Bagan, East Bangal etc. They play in a ONGC national football league and santosh trophy.

Ministry shatters politicians’ London dreams
Rejects govt’s fresh proposal to send pruned 3-member team
Pradeep Sharma
Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, August 2
The Union Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry has shattered Haryana politician’s London dreams. Close on the heels of cancelling the jaunt of a nine-member team, led by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, to cheer the sportspersons participating in the London Olympics, the ministry today rejected a fresh proposal of the Haryana Government to send a pruned three-member team to London.
In a communication to the state government, the ministry today clarified that it had “not agreed” to the state government’s proposal to send Sports Minister Sukhbir Kataria, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) Prahlad Singh Gillankhera and Principal Secretary (Sports and Youth Affairs) Hardeep Kumar to London to cheer the players. Eighteen of the 81 sportspersons representing the country at the sports extravaganza are from Haryana.
Originally, Hooda, his confidant and Ambala MLA Venod Sharma, Sukhbir Kataria, Chief Parliamentary Secretaries Prahlad Singh Gillankhera and Sultan Singh, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Chhatar Singh, Principal OSD to the Chief Minister MS Chopra, Hardeep Kumar and Director (Sports and Youth Affairs) OP Singh and Senior Secretary of the Chief Minister Shadi Lal Kapur were part of the London-bound delegation.
The Ministry of External Affairs had reportedly given “political clearance” to the visit of the nine-member team to London. However, the Union Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry put its foot down following instructions from the Prime Minister’s Office directing it not to clear any state government delegation to the London Olympics as part of austerity measures.
Against the backdrop of the ‘non-committal’ approach of the ministry, Hooda reportedly pulled out of the tour citing “drought-like” conditions in the state, the recent violence at the Maruti plant at Manesar and the forthcoming vice-presidential elections as the reasons. While the Sports Ministry’s objection to the tour was clear from a communication sent to the state government on July 30 “withdrawing” the permission for the tour, the government was adamant on sending a three-member delegation to London. Joint Director (Sports) Satpal Sharma camped in New Delhi for the last two days to convince Sports Ministry officials to allow a pruned three-member team to London. He drew a blank as the ministry officials said a final no to the tour today.

It’s misuse of public money
The money spent on making advance bookings for accommodation and air ticket bookings is clearly a wastage of public money by the Hooda government and should be recovered from the pockets of the politicians and officials who were originally part of the London-bound delegation. The jaunt, which was to be led by Chief Minister, was not needed at the first place and the Sports Ministry has taken a right decision in declining the tour programme.

Thoda ajeeb system hai fir. Boxing mein to dono semi finalists ko bronze mil jata hai.

But you must be right. Media mein bhi kuch news nahi aayi match se pehle. Nahi to headline aaa jati "bronze medal assured".

If you get injured while boxing in semis, it should not not be held against you as you cant take part in another bout. That is the logic for giving both semis bronze in boxing.

Looks like, its end of the road for Vikas as India was unable to 'appeal the appeal'.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=oly&id=8233266

LONDON -- India's veteran boxing coach says he accepts the decision by amateur boxing's governing body to overturn his welterweight's apparent victory in Friday's competition.
Gurbankhsh Singh Sandhu was disappointed, but he says "a rule is a rule."
AIBA reversed the result of Krishan Vikas' 13-11 victory over U.S. welterweight Errol Spence, sending Spence into the quarterfinals.
AIBA reviewed the bout after the American team appealed, ruling Vikas had committed nine holding fouls in the third round alone that went unpunished.
India's boxing federation asked AIBA about appealing the appeal, but was told that's not possible.
Sandhu says he's concentrating on the rest of his strong team. Light flyweight Devendro Laishram upset Mongolia's Serdamba Purevdorj on Saturday.

Deepak bhai, worldwide number 7 hona to kisi bhi field mein bahut badi baat hai. I think total number of ahtletes 30+ the. Jahaan tak medal ki baat hai, iska chance tha nahin unless a few athletes had injuries or exceptionally bad day. She performed very close to her personal best. But the medal ones can throw a few meters ahead. Aise sport mein to ek aadh meter add kar do, badi baat hai. To add a few more meters is almost impossible. Jahaan tak mujhe gyaan hai, isne kaafi improvement ki hai pichhle kuchh saal. Ab to 35 saal ki ho gayi. I doubt aage chance hai, but the hope is that people like her inspire other athletes. Jaise Akhil/Jitender wagairah ne Bhiwani ko boxing ka adda banaya tha.

Kapil bhai, I agree ki 30+ athletes me 7th position par aana asaan nahi hai.. Par mera kahna ye tha ki hum har bar apne khiladi ke haarne par yehi dilaasa dete hai ki world no 1 se har gaye, koi nahi.. humaare khiladi kyu nahi bante world no 1? or bante hai to olympic me aakar thus kyu ho jate hai (Deepika Kumari)? Just take an example of Usain Bolt. Pichle 1-2 mahine me Blake ne usko 2 bar haraya tha, par usne sabse bade khel me apna best diya aur Gold medal jeet liya kal. Why our athletes dont have this kind of attitude ki ye medal sirf mera hai aur mujhe har haal me jeetna hai?? Har bar waha par haar jate hai jaha performance ki sabse jyada jarurat hoti hai..

Kal weightlifting me Armenia ki athelete ne world champion ko haraya. Jabki pichli bar beijing me wo final 10 me bhi qualify nahi kar paayi thi(as per commentators).. Jeet hamesha apne ache performance se hoti hai.. luck kabhi kabhi hi sath deta hai.. 1-2 ko chod kar, humare baki sab khiladi har bar jate hai aur haar kar waps aa jate hai.. They dont seem to learn from their mistakes.
Aur hum ye soch kar santosh kar lete hai koi nahi dil to jeeta..Har bar har jagah yehi soch kar satisfy ho jate hai, jo ki meri najar me galat hai. Mai isi attitude ko badalne ki baat kar rha tha :)

PS : Aur bera nahi, par jab hum kise team te haar jaya karte to un gel agle sunday ne fer match tekya karte ar unke gande paad ke aaya karte!

Friend,

Your concern on the poor position of India in the Olympics medal tally is genuine. The sports and games policy formulation for the country is long overdue.

The win and defeat are the two sides of the same coin. All the participants in these type of competitions represent the best possible talent of their countries and try to give their best during the games/sports events.
None goes there to loose. A bit more concentration and concerted effort leads to winning gold, silver and bronze medals and in the event of loss of concentration results in ouster from the arena of competition.

By complimenting the Indian participants for their attainments we only show our sense of belonging with them which lessens their sense of despair and dejection to some extent.

The piece of advice contained in the last line of your post may, perhaps, prove good in the long run if taken up by the sports organisations/ministry/players.

Thanks

Vijender loses a bout he should have won...first round was 3-3...then something strange happens in round 2...vijender seems to be on top, commentators say so as well but the result comes out 2 points in favor of Uzbek boxer. Our man has no option but to go all out in final round and gets hit in the process. Commentators kept saying he was the better boxer and round 2 was strange - made him change his strategy. Ek male boxer bacha hai ab out of 7 guys all of who seem promising. If no one gets a medal, that doesn't really Indian boxers' showing.

BBC ke commentator the. Yahaan tak keh diya aglon ne ki shaayad judges ne galat button daba diye. Aur kya kahalwaaoge.

Saare ladkon ke match dekhe hain maine. I think Vijender had the best technique and performance, maybe because of his experience and understanding of point system. It is amateur boxing. There is no point in going for glory. There is a point system and you follow it. He was defensive against the American and it worked. One more extra punch he had got from Gausha and he'd have gone out. Kal to woh donon boxers mein se zyada aggressive tha. In words of the commentators, "his punches were crisper and sharper".

In sync with ya. It's day light robbery with most of our boxers, referees have been utterly biased. But never mind, our boxers won the hearts if not the medals and we should be proud of them.

And as you stated rightly, its amateur boxing, here technique and point count .. aggressiveness, power hardly matter.

Rolli hui thi ki nahin yeh to kaun bata sakta hai. Par kismat to kharaab thi hi ke 4-5 close match saaare hi ulte pade. Ek aadh apni taraf pad jaata to medal pakke aane the. In khiladiyon ko protsaahan dene ki zaroorat hai ki lage rahein jam ke.

Arre bhai, par Kajla to boxing ki baat karr raha tha. Aapki yeh wrestling waali khabar toh nayi hai. Boxing pe sirf India waale shikayat nahin karr rahe. Aur sirf pehli baar AIBA controversy mein nahin aayi. Hamaari aadat ho gayi ki apni hi side ki kami nikaalna. Yeh link dekh lo, "India-centric" nahin hai.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2012/aug/02/olympic-boxing-controversies-failures-scoring-system

Aur Indian media waale to badha chadha ke likhenge hi. Unki to aadat ho rahi hai raai ka pahaad banaane ki. Jab chaubare pe fansi billo rani jaise news item ho sakte hain, to yeh to tagda masala hai. Mera yeh maanna nahin hai ki boxing mein India ke khilaaf alag se cheating hui hai. Par boxing ka scoring system bahut kharaab hai aur boxing ke judges/referees mein corruption ke bahut cases hain. Kaaran koi bhi raha ho, thoda sa bhi kismat saath de jaati to ek-aadh medal pakka nikalna tha. Adhiktar ladkon ka game kaafi achha tha.

Aur yeh wrestling waala sauda samajh nahin aaya. Satpal guruji keh rahe hain ki teen point Bulgaria waale ko galat diye gaye. Teen point to total nahin hue us kushti mein. Point to donon side se ek bhi score na hua. Pehla round tha 0-0. Fir ek ball nikaali gayi ek thaili se. Jiske color ki ball aa jaaye, usko advantage milta hai. Bulgaria waale ki likad gayi. Amit ko bola pair thaane ke liye aur Bulgaria waale ko neeche girana tha. Jo ki kaafi asaan hota hai aur usne karr diya. Doosra round bhi same tha, score raha 0-0. Fir ball nikaali gayi. Is baar 66% chance hona chaahiye tha Amit ka (kyunki uski 2 ball bach rahi thi aur Bulgaria waale ki ek). Par Bulgaria waala kismat likhwa ke aaya tha. Usi ki nikal gayi fir se aur usne fir advantage ka faayda tha liya. Ab bhai yeh bhi ho sakta hai ki Satpal guruji kuchh aur keh rahe hon aur is reporter bhai ki samajh mein nahin aayi baat.
