Wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh passed away on Thursday morning at his residence in Mumbai. He had been battling for his life in a city hospital since the last four days and was brought back home on Wednesday night.
The 84-year-actor was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital in an emergency condition on July 7. He had suffered a cardiac arrest and since then he had been in the ICU.The Commonwealth wrestling champion entered the film industry in the fifties and is known for his roles in King Kong and Faulad. He was last seen in Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met in which he played Kareena Kapoor's grandfather. The veteran actor had played the character of Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar's epic television series Ramayan.Dara Singh died of a cardiac respiratory arrest around 7.30 am. He had been taken off the ventilator on Wednesday night.

We bow our heads to the pious memory of the Great Jat and pray to God to grant peace to his soul and place under his feet and strength to the members of his family to bear with this irreparable loss !

RIP to the great man.

Although he mostly lived in Mumbai, he also contributed to the local Punjabi film industry by creating Dara Studios, a large studio complex in Mohali in the 80s. The studios were largely used for hosting wedding functions and receptions since the Punjabi film industry went into decline in the 90s. But things are looking up now and an increasing number of movies are shot there.

जय श्री राम मेरे सभी जाट बंधुओं !!

इस पृथ्वी पर कुछ लोग ऐसे आते हैं जैसे कोई अवतार हो और हम सभी यही चाहते हैं कि वो सदैव हमारे अंग-संग रहें. अन्यथा चौरासी वर्ष की आयु कम नहीं मानी जाती, ऐसी ही एक हस्ती थे ''आदरणीय दारा सिंह रंधावा'' . भारतीय तरीके की कुश्ती को विश्व में स्थान और आदर दिलवाने वाले.

बाल्यावस्था में हम सब उनके जैसा बनने का सपना देखते थे. जब उन्होंने ''किंग-कोंग'' को हराया था तो हम जाटों की नहीं अपितु प्रत्येक भारतीय की छाती चौड़ी हो गयी थी.
आजकल के बालक तो नकली पहलवानों को देख देख कर प्रसन्न होते रहते हैं, जो नाटक करते हैं कुश्ती नहीं (सुशील कुमार जी एवं अन्य अपने जाट पहलवानों को छोड़कर) .
हमारे वास्तविक पहलवान तो ये ही थे जिन्होंने देशी अखाड़ों में अपने शरीर को तपाया और बलशाली बनाया.

'' जा-जा दारा सिंह मत बन'' पहले सब यही बोलते थे, आज भी कुछ लोग ये बोलते हैं, इस से व्यक्ति की लोकप्रियता का आकलन हो जाता है.
ऐसे वीर-महावीर पहलवान को नमन एवं श्रद्धांजलि.

दारासिंह खुद तो कुश्ती के चैंपियन रहे ही, बाद में भी उन्होंने मशहूर दंगलों में "रैफरी" का रोल अदा किया। 1969 में दिल्ली में "भारत केसरी" का दंगल हुआ जिसमें मास्टर चन्दगीराम और ईरानी पहलवान मेहरदीन की टक्कर हुई । मेहरदीन सात मिनट बाद ही दंगल से बाहर हो गया । दारासिंह ने कहा - "भाई मेहरदीन, लोग यह कुश्ती देखने दूर-दूर से आये हैं, बीच में मत छोड़, हार-जीत तो होती ही रहती है ।" पर मेहरदीन चन्दगीराम के हाथ की पकड़ से घबरा गया था । दारासिंह ने चन्दगीराम को विजयी घोषित कर दिया ।

यहां जाटलैंड पर अजीब बहस चलती रहती है । कईयों ने तो यह भी लिख दिया था कि दारासिंह जाट है ही नहीं ! -

One is really sad in knowing that a great man like DARA SINGH is no more. He will be remembered for ages for his strength and humility.

He was a true icon. I have seen him twice 'up, close and personal, in my life. One felt really good and strong after meeting him. I was also fortunate to see him when he referred the wrestling match between Ch Chandgi Ram and Meherdin. A truly historic match.

No one looked smarter in a Red T-Shirt and White Trousers than DARA SINGH. I saw him in this dress in 1971 or 72 near Karnal on a road side tea stall while going to Chandigarh.

I have no doubt that if there is GOD and HEAVEN; DARA SINGH will sit right next to the Almighty.

वे एक महान वय्क्तितव के धनी थे | उनको शायद ही किसी ने कभी गुस्से में देखा होगा | जाट समाज मुंबई को पीछले ३० साल से नेतर्तव परदान कर रहे थे | वे बीमार थे , तब भी मुस्कुराते रहते थे | दो तीन बार उनसे समाज के विषय में मिलना हुआ , तब जाना की वे इतने बड़े हो कर भी , हर किसी छोड़े बड़े का खड़े हो कर अभिवादन सवीकार करते थे | सज्जनता उनके चरित्र का सबसे बड़ा गुण थी | वे हिंदी सिनेमा जगत के पहले एक्सन हीरो थे ,पहले "ही मेन"थे ( दुसरे धरमेंदर जी को माना जाता हैं )| वे कई बार अपने जीवन की कई एसी घटनाओं का जीकर करते थे की , कभी ५० साल पहले किसी ने उनकी सहायता की हो और आज तक याद रखे हुए थे , वे कभी किसी के किये हुए एहसान को भूलते नहीं थे | महान होकर भी सज्जनता ,नमर्ता और शालीनता पूरवक जीवन जीना सब के बस की बात नहीं |

We lost our HE-MAN, the epitome of strength and the man who symbolized strength in his name itself. People in villages often say- "Tu kaun sa Dara Singh hai", when they have to measure someone's strength. I have seen his couple of interviews on YouTube and found what a down to earth personality he was..Somebody who touches the sky without leaving the ground....
RIP Rustam-e-Hind Shri Dara Singh ji.. You will be missed...

Dara Singh ji will remain the icon of strength and humility. Some thing we all can learn from the great human being. Pray for peace to departed soul and strength to family to bear the great loss.

Almost 50 years ago I was lucky enough to see both brothers (Dara Singh and Randhawa) in action in Bombay - Laxmibai stadium. That memory is still vivid and is cherished.

Dara Singh's ashes immersed in Punjab river

The mortal remains of wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh, who died (http://www.rediff.com/movies/slide-show/slide-show-1-pix-stars-fans-say-goodbye-to-dara-singh/20120712.htm) in Mumbai last week, were immersed in Satluj river at Kiratpur Sahib in Punjab according to Sikh rituals on Monday.

The ashes were brought from Mumbai to Chandigarh by air and then taken to Kiratpur Sahib by road.

A large number of fans of Dara Singh were present to pay tribute.

Sons Vindoo Dara Singh, Parduman Singh Randhawa and Amrik Singh Randhawa immersed the ashes. Shiromani Akali Dal [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=shiromani+akali+dal) ] leader and area MLA, Daljit Singh Cheema, was also present.

Dara Singh, who was born in a village in Amritsar [ Images (http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=amritsar) ] district, breathed his last on July 12 at the age of 83.
