Townsville, Aug 20: Indian tail-enders Harmeet Singh (13 not out) and Sandeep Sharma (2 not out) showed great character to help India to win a thriller against Pakistan in the quarter finals in the under-19 cricket World Cup on Monday at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townville.

Earlier Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first, were dismissed for a paltry 136 in 45.1 overs. Pakistan’s skipper Babar Azam made wonderful 50 and Ehsan Adil made 35 runs and Umar Waheed 27 were the top scores for Pakistan. India bowlers Ravikant Singh and Sandeep Singh took three wickets each. After a steady start, Pakistan made 55 for 2, Ravikant took Saad Ali and Afridi in consecutive deliveries to make the score 62 for 6. Azam and Zafar Gohar made 28 runs partnership for the seventh wicket. Adil struck four sixes during his entertaining 38-ball 35 in the end.

Chasing a small target of 137 to win, India lost their top three batsmen for only eight runs in the first 5 overs but Baba Aparajith (51) and Vijay Zol (36) rescued the team with a 66-run fourth wicket partnership. India’s victory found to be very comfortable at one stage, when the score was 124 for six. After losing three consecutive wickets, India needed 10 runs with just 1 wicket remaining. Mumbai lad Harmeet Singh and number 11 Sandeep Sharma from Punjab made crucial 10 runs to guide India to victory with two overs to spare. Zia-ul-Haq and Azizullah claimed three wickets each for 23 and 30 runs, respectively for Pakistan.

India will now meet New Zealand in their semifinal on August 23. Earlier, New Zealand beat West Indies by three wickets in the other quarterfinal match.
