View Full Version : Haryana sisters(Geeta, Babita) win bronze in World Wrestling Championship

Haryana government has announced cash award of Rs three lakh each for Geeta Phogat (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Geeta-Phogat) and Babita Phogat, the women wrestlers hailing from the State, for winning bronze medals in the ongoing women's World Wrestling Championship (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/World-Wrestling-Championship) at Edmonton, Canada.

Geeta Phogat has won second medal for the country on Saturday in the Women's World Wrestling Championship in Edmonton by securing the bronze in the 55kg freestyle category.

She got the better of Ukraine's Nataliya Synyshyn 3:0 in the final of Repechage 1 Friday. Babita has clinched the Bronze medal in 51kg category after defeating Zamira Rakhmanova from Russia in the repechage round.

Although she lost to Jessica Anne Marrie Macdonald Bondy from Canada in the semifinal round, yet she clinched the medal after defeating Zamira Rakhmanova from Russia in the repechage round.

While congratulating the two women wrestlers for their feat, Hooda said that their achievement in the World Championship has made the whole state and the country proud and once again proven that the girls were not less than boys in any manner.

Time and time again, various Haryana girls have made the country and the state proud with their sterling performances in different fields.

He also recalled the achievements of Saina Nehwal (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Saina-Nehwal), Kalpana Chawla (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Kalpana-Chawla), Krishna Poonia (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Krishna-Poonia) and other women and added that many others would get inspiration from their outstanding performance in their respective fields.

This is the best outing for India in terms of medals.The previous best was a lone and I guess the only medal India had won before this tournament and that was bronze by a Tomar girl.Apart from these two medals,one Sheoran and one Kaur girl have managed to secure a pretty respectable 5th pos as well.
Kudos to all the contingent.
