Forty-year-old Deepa Malik, who is paralyzed chest-down and had three spinal tumour surgeries which required 183 stitches between her shoulder blades, is the first in the severely handicapped category to be selected for the Arjuna award. On Wednesday, she received the award from the president of India for her achievements in track and field."I took to sports at the age of 36. I ran a catering and restaurant business for seven years but had to close it down after I decided to train for the Commonwealth and Asian Games in 2010," Deepa said.Deepa battled the odds to win laurels in para-athletics. She won two gold medals (javelin and discus) at the Malaysian Open athletics championship in April and achieved a world ranking of No.3.Her tally of medals is impressive - two new Asian records at the World Games at Sharjah in December last year and two bronze medals including a silver medal at the World athletics championship at Christchurch, New Zealand, apart from a bronze medal at the Para - Asian games held in China earlier. At the national and state level, Deepa has notched 39 golds, four silver and two bronze medals. Deepa has never allowed her disability to hamper her. She has also entered the Limca book of records for feats in swimming biking and rallying.

I first time watched her in the game show-Roadies,recent version/audition.At that time she was training for the olympics and was put up against other contestants in a swimming competition.She won easily while other were struggling to even catch a breath.Everybody saluted her passion and courage and she is also awarded lifetime achievement/membership of Roadies(something like that).Her husband is/was an Army officer.So i guess he had a great role to play in her success coz that's what you are taught in Defense-Live Life King Size and against all odds.
And don't undermine Roadies challenges.They are good.In that very version contestants were put up against the Haryana Hercules-Sushil Kumar.In the previous version Vijender Singh featured in a boxing contest.

संवाद सहयोगी, खरखौदा :एशियाई पैरा ओलपिक खेलों के पचास मीटर तैराकी में स्वर्ण पदक जीतने वाली खिलाड़ी दीपा मलिक का क्षेत्र वासियों ने भव्य स्वागत किया।उनके राष्ट्रपति से अर्जुन अवार्ड पाने की खुशी में स्थानीय लोगों ने खरखौदा में सम्मान समारोह का आयोजन किया।सम्मान समारोह के मुख्यातिथि कुलदीप पहलवान ने खिलाड़ी दीपा मलिक को गदा भेंट कर सम्मानित किया। इस अवसर पर मुख्यातिथि कुलदीप पहलवान ने कहा कि जो लोग शरीर से स्वस्थ हैं वे भी ऐसी उपलब्धियां जीवन में प्राप्त नहीं कर पाते हैं। लेकिन विकलांग होने के बावजूद दीपा ने राष्ट्रीय व अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर देश का नाम रोशन किया है। उन्हें राष्ट्रीय स्तर के अनेक पुरस्कारों से नवाजा जा चुका है। उनकी उपलब्धियों को देखते हुए उन्हें अर्जुन अवार्ड से भी सम्मानित किया गया है। इस अवसर पर सुरेश धनखड़, मलिक खाप के दादा बलजीत मलिक, पंडित रामअवतार,पंडित सतनारायण, सरपंच चांद बखेता, पंडित ऋषि प्रकाश, सन्नी, कैप्टन जयसिंह, निर्मला दहिया आदि उपस्थित रहे।
