India has a large number of heritage sites.

But due to vagaries of the climate and negligence on our part they are fast loosing their existence.

The Archaeological Survey of India is entrusted with the task of restoration and preservation of these sites alongwith the Archaeology Departments of the respective state governments where these monuments are located. If these sites and monuments are properly maintained they can easily attract religious and cultural tourists from every nook and corner of the globe and thus boost the economic as well as cultural activities to a large extent.

The readers are requested to list the historic sites and monuments in their vicinity that need harnessing so that the attention of the concerned authorities could be drawn towards their upkeep, maintenance and development as tourist spots and cultural centres.

Thanks and regards,

The old Hindu Temples of Kalayat in Haryana are fast dilapidating and are in dire need of upkeep and preservation. They are proud heritage of Haryana as very few old buildings have come to be saved from the vagaries of climate and atmospheric change as well as the onslaught of the aggressors.

The concerned authorities/ government departments and some NGOs could take up this noble cause in their hands before they crumble down !!!

I think, the best way is to commercialize and seek private sector help. The forts and palaces should be returned to the owners on the condition that they maintain the property and run hotel or some kind of tourist spots.
I wonder, if Bharatpur Fort and other Jat Forts still with their owners?

Village Topra Kalan district Yamunanagar had the proud privilege of having one Asokan Pillar installed by the great Maurya Emperor here. The Asokan Pillar Edict was uprooted from here at the instance of Feroze Tughlaq and carried to Delhi where it was installed on the second storey of the Old Fort near Pragati Maidan. Now it is known as Topra Delhi Asokan Pillar Edict.

Recently the village Panchayat has taken an initiative to instal not only the replica of the Topra-Delhi Asokan Edict Pillar in the proposed Asoka Edict Park but also to house replicas of all other Asokan Pillar Edicts, Rock Edicts and Stone inscription in it.

The village Panchayat has involved the Sarpanches of the neighbouring villages to see the fulfillment of their cherished goal to complete the Project in hand. They have got registered a society to undertake the construction of The Asoka Edict Park housing meditation hall, library cum research centre on Buddhism. They have got prepared a Project Report from the Experts from N I T, Roorkee and also have started work under expert guidance of the Buddhist Forum as well as district administration to develop the historic village into a tourist attraction destination from pilgrimes from within India and abroad.

Hope other historic places would be identified and their tourism potential developed to harness the state culture and economy.

Thanks and regards

Friends,

I am told that the land for developing the Asoka Edict Park as

identified by the Samiti has been cleared by the concerned authorities.

The preliminary work of fencing/construction of boundary wall is being started shortly.

The Buddhist Forum, a Yamunanagar based NGO has identified several Buddhist sites in Haryana which are fast disappearing and has taken up the issue of their preservation and exploration with the authorities. If these sites are properly excavated by the ASI or State Department of Archaeology, developed and looked after they can perhaps become attraction for foreign tourists interested in cultural heritage of India.

Friends,

This is a matter of satisfaction to learn that Chaneti Buddhist Stupa located at Chaneti village of district Yamunanagar, identified by Professor [Dr.] Devendra Handa in 1960's, has in recent years been restored by A S I authorities to its pristine glory and has started to attract Buddhist pilgrims from abroad like Japan and Korea.

This example gives wake up call to the concerned authorities to rise to the occasion to restore fading heritage sites.

Thanks and regards
