Back in 1914, India was firmly in the grip of Great Britain and the freedom struggle was still in a nascent state. At that time, India's primary demand, rather request, was dominion status — the idea of an independent India had not yet taken root — and the Congress hoped to achieve it through prayer and petition. That's when war clouds broke over Europe. History of the world was about to change. Indians didn't know then that they would play a great role in ushering in this change, but after the war, they did realize the quality of their contribution. This realization would change the nature of our freedom movement from one of passive resistance to a full-blown agitation, though mostly peaceful. But what really happened after 1947 that this realization just vanished? Why is it that a hundred years after the Great War, when the world is on a remembrance mode today, we Indians are still scratching our heads about our role in that epoch-making event?
