According to the birth registration record the most dismal gender ratio of 674 females per 1,000 males has been recorded in Rewari district of Haryana, which is the lowest in the country.

As reported in the Tribune dated 6th June, 2014: "Interestingly, the lowest gender ratio has been recorded in those villages where the health authorities have persistently been running awareness programmes to improve the gender ratio.''

What implications are likely to be of this sordid affair of things and how to improve the situation in the future, kindly share your views !

It would not be out of place to mention that in the year 2011 the gender ratio in the district was 797 females to 1,000 males.

The amazing steep fall is an eye opener to all concerned and to come forward to act in the direction to normalise this ratio.

Sir,

Thanks for bringing up this contemporary and burning topic.

There needs to be multi-pronged fight.

1. First, change in the mindset of the people including the so-called educated and well-to-do society. I am amazed and disappointed to see the feeling of guilt on the face of a couple who has been blessed with a female child. On the contrary, the brimming faces of couples blessed with male children is also too evident. It is highly shameful that this is much more prevalent in the so-called educated lot including people in society who might be your friends and family. I for one, hardly get to see or hear anyone these days blessed with a girl child among friends and family. It seems supposedly God is doing wonders/miracles by bringing into the world only male children thanks to the abortion clinics which despite the ban still are doing roaring business.

2. Second, the govt. should not only act VERY strictly and promptly with offenders indulging in molestation and rape, it should also incentivize parents of girl children by giving them handsome monetary and other grants at the birth of girl through till the time they attain higher education, take up jobs and then marriage.

Beyond the govt., the major part of the blame lies with the society. People will have stop offering condolences to parents blessed with girl children and saying 'better luck next time'.

At the risk of antagonizing them, I have no hesitation in saying that I am sure there would be quite a few people even here on JL who cannot keep their hand on their heart and say that they have NOT directly or indirectly indulged in a practice/behaviour which supported female foeticide.

Thanks for your forth right and equally forceful plea to nail the problem in the head.

In fact, most of the people in Indian society are blind-fold in following the traditional mind set to have a son to give them salvation after their death by ' putting Ganges water in their mouth' and lit the 'funeral pyre' !

The 'educated elite group' is more prone to violate the PNDT Act and needs to be educated to avoid committing the criminal act of killing the girl child before they see the light of the day !

Need of a strong conciousness among the people to treat their children both girls and boys on equal terms in their homes would lead a long way to elimination of the evil of foeticide of girl child.

The respected members of the Jatland.com site may set an example by following this act of equal treatment towards their children and take lead in the movement for social awareness in the way they deem fit !

These "health authorities" are the sole culprits because they consist of greedy doctors and surgeons who run secret clinics in private homes and charge hefty fee for gender test of pregnant women. This ratio will further go down because of rapid urbanisation which is spreading from Delhi to Gurgaon to Rewari, and because of spread of modern school education (where English is tought from class 1) in villages. Many of you will not agree to this argument but it is true. In Indian context, wherever there is so called "poverty" or "low literacy", the male-female ratio is better compared to areas with high literacy and richness (Kerala state is an exception though).

The ultrasound machine today has become slim and compact and it can be easily kept in a hand bag, thus making it difficult to raid the secret clinics.

And it is also not fit to argue that our male dominated society is solely responsible for this. It is the would-be mother herself who is ready to undergo a "gender test" of foetus and if it is a female foetus, that mother happily agrees to get rid of a baby girl, before she is born. So, our female society is also equally responsible for all this. Our culture terms this barbaric act as a sin but perhaps modern education and newly-rich families consider it their right. They argue that it is their right to choose a female or a male child!

We are lucky that in Our family 70% girls and 30% boys.

Three big reason

1. Lack of Education
2. Girls are not safe.
3. Dowry, domestic violence

Its very sad that female are more responsible for dowry, Gender test etc.

How does this infer to female foeticide? Any factual reports before believing in The tribune blindly?

Though no separate 'factual report' is there yet the end result of birth rate ration of the children boys and girls born during the period of study, hints in that direction that unborn girls are got killed. If there is any other concrete reason is there, one can share the same to contradict the 'wrong' assumption.

The statement under reference may be read in the context of rising disproportion of the ratio of new born girls and boys and its impact on the social fabric in the days ahead. Does this not leading the society to horrible consequences if the trend is not checked before it is too late to do so !!

So, you mean to say that God has all of a sudden started doing miracles? He is only sending boys to this world and not girls.

To get deeper into your question, I would like to know why did the govt. pass a law to ban foetal gender testing? This law was passed only in response to the prevailing societal circumstances where female foetus were killed in the womb.

But the sad part is that despite the ban, this testing is still rampant (not just prevalent). Lust for the greenback among doctors, clinics and govt. health officials ensures that the growing demand for foetal gender testing especially among the educated lot and in particular from North India does not go unmet.

Science is a boon for mankind, but we through our lust have made it into a bane. If we still do not recognize the blunder that we as a society have made, we will have to pay a very heavy price.

I am sure that in the two-son families, when the sons grow up, they will curse their parents for indulging in female foeticide because there would hardly be any girls around to start a family with and the balance in society would have been lost because of the mental sickness in such couples.

How does this infer to female foeticide? Any factual reports before believing in The tribune blindly?

Based on census data for 2011, gender ratio for children 0-6 age was 787 in Rewari and this district was at third place in worst districts in Haryana. Birth registration record are based on registration data and girl child is less likely to be registered than a boy child. So one reason for 674 ratio could be lower registration among females children. Though I totally agree that there is a strong need to improve this problem of gender discrimination.

Good that you agree that the problem needs immediate attention but is it really so that there is discrimination in recording the birth of children as you believe: ''Birth registration record are based on registration data and girl child is less likely to be registered than a boy child. Hard to believe !

Sir, the ratio '674' in 2013 is eye opening but I think it is based on civil registration system that report data based on what people register for getting birth certificates. This is a believe females children are under reporting in a voluntary registration system. Reasons could be many. Unfortunately 'sample registration system' does not provide district level estimates. Waiting for DLHS-4 results that could also open our eyes.

I was in kerela two years back, on thing I noticed there "They prefer a girl child" whereas in North India "We prefer a baby boy". People here pretend that it hardly makes any difference be it a boy or a girl child, but deep inside they have hidden inclination towards a male child. Reasons can be many, may be social customs like dowry, parents are over protective and they feel a girl child needs more attention and is more vunerable, such thinking still previals which is the main reason behind declining female sex ratio.
Also girl education is one thing which can improve the situation, in kerala we have high literacy rate and more females per thousand males, as a result there crimes are very less compared to North India and women are comparatively safe.

Coming to boys vs girls child debate, I dont find any wrong about wanting a baby boy. Most women themselves want a baby boy more than a girl.

Sex ratio for all age group has increased form 861 to 879 in 2001-11. However, for children aged 0-6 years it is very low and increased from 819 to 834 in a decade (2001-11). Yes, this shows an improvement in a decade, but still Haryana has the lowest child sex ratio in India.

I watched a movie around 8-10 years back named "Matra Bhoomi" on this topic of female foeticide and then upbringing of male child. It was horrifying and heart touching both. There is no problem in expecting a boy like no problem in expecting a girl but at the end it is god's creation and we should not interfere in it. Nature keeps it balance by itself.

I think begging for marriage , bringing Biharan & being Randwa are some intitial consequences of this.

It is good sign that politicians have opened their mouth to say that there is acute shortage of brides in Haryana. But it would be better if they, instead of promising import of brides from other parts of the country, come forward to motivate the people of Haryana to give equal treatment to both boys and girls and avoid killing the unborn girls in the wombs of their mothers.

Would they do so or not is the big question.

No main stream media will appreciate and highlights such news.

I guess instead of using equal " Treatment " ----- we should say equal " opportunities " .

If I take my example I have seen my cousin brothers getting severe beating over some collective mischief of childhood and I being gal always get spared . I always used this as my advantage and used to threaten them over same ( please do not judge me I was a kid ......smart one though )

Please can we really treat 2 different gender equal .....no .....we must not even treat 2 individuals equal .
