India blank Nepal 3-0 in men's tennis, sail into quartersINCHEON: India blanked Nepal 3-0 to sail into the quarterfinals of men's tennis team event in the 17th Asian Games here on Sunday.

Yuki Bhambri did not drop a game en route to a crushing straight sets 6-0, 6-0, win over Jeetendra Pariyar to seal the issue in India's favour, after Sanam Singh posted a comfortable 6-0 6-1 victory over Abhishek Bastola at the Yeorumul Tennis Courts.

In the inconsequential doubles tie, the Indian duo of Divij Sharan and Saketh Myneni registered a comfortable straight sets 6-0 6-0 win over Santosh Khatri and Sonam Dawa, thrashing their opponents in only 35 minutes.

The sixth seeded Indians will face top seeds Kazakhstan in their last-eight match. Kazakhstan defeated Hong Kong in their second round match 3-0.

Yuki needed just 37 minutes to polish off his hapless opponent while Sanam 40 minutes to see off Bastola, giving India an easy win. — PTI

INCHEON: Jitu Rai on Sunday spearheaded India's 10 metre air pistol team to clinch the bronze medal in the 17th Asian Games but missed out on an individual medal finishing fifth at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range here.

A day after winning the gold medal in the 50 metre pistol event, the Indian Army shooter continued his inspiring form to lead the men's team, also comprising Samresh Jung and Prakash Nanjappa, to give India its second bronze from the sport.

Both India and China were tied on 1,743 points but the latter clinched the silver on account of an extra x. The Chinese team had 65x while Indian has 64x. Rai, who won the 50m gold Saturday, shot 585, Jung had 580 and Nanjappa 578.

The gold went to the South Korean team comprising Kim Cheongyong (585), Jin Jongoh (581) and Lee Daemyung (578) with a total score of 1,744. The Chinese team, consisting of Pang Wei (585), Pu Qifeng (583) and Wang Zhiwei (575) had a total score of 1,743.

In the final round, Rai, who qualified at the fourth place, finished fifth with a score of 138.3. South Koreans Kim Cheongyong (201.2) and three-time Olympic champion Jin Jongoh (179.3) won the gold and the bronze respectively while the silver went to China's Pang Wei (199.3). Rai's compatriots Jung narrowly missed out after he finished ninth while Nanjappa finished 14th in the qualifying round.

The three medals that Indians have won till now are all from shooting. Shweta Chaudhry has also won the bronze in the women's 10m air pistol event Saturday to open India's medal count and shortly after Rai gave the country the first gold medal from the Incheon Games. -IANS

Second largest population in the world and 11th place in Asian games?

Two important pillars that frame future generations of society are education and sports.

It seems India is at top in both of them. It is high time for the government to rethink its priorities.

Is just having a young population and being happy about it enough?

Who has more money and who should have more money in India? Religious bodies, political parties, political people, corrupt people or the the organizations which develop civic infrastructure for the public use?

India can compare itself to China in most of the issues but can it provide its sports people the world class facilities that China does?

India has one third land area as compared to China, its population is going to be equal to that of China in future.

Is India doing enough management and organization of its resources, so as to provide its citizens facilities for sports?

How many of the athletes are able to achieve their goals and how?

A major portion of youth and its capacity goes waste due to lack of facilities and organizational support.

Dear friend Dr. Janghu, an academician like you is not supposed to spread wrong information. Here are all wrestlers who won medals in Asian Games. Please tell where is Lila Ram Pehlwan in these? In fact, in 1951 Delhi Asian Games, there was no event of wrestling. I would also like to add that leave the world aside, we are no where in Asia also in wrestling. Japan, Iran, South Korea, Kazakhstan etc. are far ahead than us, specially Japan and Iran.

PATIALA: A 23-year-old Haryana girl, whose punches took more than six months to convince her parents that she was made for boxing, will represent India at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Scotland. She will contest in the 75 kg category.*

Pooja Rani, who comes from the sport's cradle, Bhiwani, made her entry into the three-member Indian women's boxing team after winning her final bout at the trials on Friday.*

Mindful of her father's dislike for boxing, Pooja recalled how she would conceal the bruises and injuries suffered in the ring from her parents.*

"My parents were dead against my plans of making a career out of boxing. My father would say, "Acche bache boxing nahin khelte (good children don't play boxing)". Such was the situation that I feared my father would stop me from going to the boxing ring if he saw my injuries. So I would conceal my injuries from him as well as my mother," Pooja said.*

However, things improved at her home after she won silver in the National Youth Boxing Championship in 2009 in the 60 kg category. Two months after her first win, she defeated one of Haryana women's boxing's leading lights, Preeti Beniwal, in the state championships.*

"Nobody objected after that win," Pooja recalled. "All my family members became supportive," added the 23-year-old, who is now serving as an Income Tax inspector in the Haryana government.*

To her credit, after her initial struggle, Pooja won silver in the Asian Boxing Championship in 2012 and added another silver at the Arafura Games held in Australia the same year.

Kudos!! to all those who have made the Nation proud. Those who fell short need more hard in days to come. India govt. should sincerely look into sports and provide a world class infrastructure to improve its ranking in such events. Care should be taken not to politicize sports bodies, till now its other way around.

GOLD FOR INDIA!

Men's kabaddi team bags 7th successive Asiad gold

INCHEON: Defending champions India staged a late comeback to edge Iran 27-25 in the men's kabaddi final to retain their gold medal at the 17th Asian Games here Friday.

The Iranian team rode on its athleticism, speed and agility to give a scare to the much-vaunted Indian team, who were complacent for the most part of the match at the Songdo Global University Gymnasium.

But the Indians utilised their experience and kept calm to give the country its 11th yellow metal in the Incheon Asiad, moving up to sixth place in the standings.
