Kakroi
village on a river1908
the farmer soldiers wait

cries and whispers fiil the night
a child is born at first light
the infant cries
the mother dies
Dhareshwar Dahiya is born

Man on a horse tills his land
time like the rivers sand in his hands
Girdhawar lion weds once more
a beautiful woman lights up the home
but the infant sleeps alone

victims all
who can cast a stone?
the child learns
to walk alone

Man plants his seed
woman bears no fruit
the childs fate now
is to earn her hate

Swami Shraddhanand
on the river of life
takes away the untended child

School on a river Haridwar
Gurukul is home for Dhareshwar

The fire and hymn of the Havan kund
heal the hurt of his emotional wounds

A lawyer in a loincloth shows the way
and the boy takes off on freedoms way

In prison after prison he finds his mould
emerging a freedom warrior both pure and bold

He heads for home
a price on his head
His father disowns him
he loved his land instead

The lawyer now Bapu
bids him flee
across the length of the Himalayas
he heeds his plea

1947 and its freedom at last
time for rewards
the trials are past

celebrations jubilations
rewards all around
only Mohan Bhai is
nowhere to be found

Homeless at last
he chose now to roam
for the freedom movement
was his only home

from place to place
he moved at a pace
fighting lost causes
and finding a place

in the hearts of the wretched
the home less the poor
they touched but the latch
he opened his door

an old womans lost cause
took him to the place of his birth
he fought all her battles
even after her death

This week the freedom movements only unsung child moved alone and alone he died

we who remain must tell you this much
all his possessions came in one cotton clutch
No wills to open or papers to process
Just a few notebooks
some khadi
a good pen

...all wrapped
in freedoms fragrance
