What does love mean?
>A group of professional people posed this question
to a group of 4 to 8
year-olds, "What does love mean?"
The answers they got were broader and deeper than
anyone could have
imagined. See what you think:

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't
bend over and paint her
toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for
her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." -
Rebecca - age 8

"When someone loves you, the way they say your
name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth." -
Billy - age 4

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy
puts on shaving cologne and
they go out and smell each other." - Karl - age 5

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody
most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs."
- Chrissy - age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."
- Terri - age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip
before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is
OK." - Danny - age 7
"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you
get tired of kissing,
you still want to be together and you talk more.
My mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss." -
Emily - age 8

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas
if you stop opening presents and listen." - Bobby - age 5

"If you want to learn to love better, you should
start with a friend who you hate." - Nikka - age 6

"There are two kinds of love. Our love. God's
love. But God makes both kinds."
"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt,
then he wears it everyday." - Noelle - age 7

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old
man who are still friends even after they know each other so well."
- Tommy - age 6

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and
scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and
smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore." - Cindy -
age 8

"My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't
see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night." - Clare - Age 5

"Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of
chicken." - Elaine -age 5

"Love is when mommy sees daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is
handsomer than Robert Redford." - Chris - age 8

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even
after you left him alone all day." - Mary Ann - age 4

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives
me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones." - Lauren -
age 4

"I let my big sister pick on me because my Mom
says she only picks on me
because she loves me. So I pick on my baby sister because I love her." -
Bethany - age 4

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and
down and little stars come out of you." - Karen - age 7
"Love is when mommy sees daddy on the toilet and
she doesn't think it's gross." - Mark - age 6

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you
mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."
- Jessica - age 8

Dear Vichitra
In a world in which most people are afraid to use the L word you have shown us the courage to care and think about something so fundamental , indeed your heart is in the right place.

Good wishes

Dear Vichitra,

Thanks for a nice post. Excellent collection. If you see deeply, all answers show one thing common, and that is "Giving" some thing to the one whom you love with out expecting or asking any thing in return.

" Love is the ability and willingness to allow those, whom you care for, to be and do whatever they choose for themselves, without any insistence that it satisfies you"
Shayad iseeliye pyar aandha hota hai.True love does not expects anything in return. It has to be spontaneous, it can't be cooked or arranged. You can't love someone out of pity or to express your gratitude towrds a person.

Great to see many of you here have it all figured out. Must be a great feeling !

For the rest of us lesser mortals who have yet to reach a higher level of realization I think it still is pretty much a painful bag of heartaching desire, pain, jealousy,
expectations, and other assorted earthly feelings that are just so damn hard to get a grip on.

My opinion on love...read on....

Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up these defenses, you build this whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life. You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They do something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own any more. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination, not just in the mind. It's a soul hurt, a body hurt... gets inside you and rips you apart pain. I hate love.

To fall in love is easy, even to remain in it is not difficult; our human loneliness is cause enough. But it is a hard quest worth making to find a comrade through whose steady presence one becomes steadily the person one desires to be.

"Pyar is a Jat Tau with a Doga standing in front of a
heart shaped door!". Iske andar ghusna mushkil, aur ghus
gaye toh bahar nikalna mushkil.

Following is a more apt definition, taken from
the Devil's Dictionary:

Love
-------
n. A temporary insanity curable by marriage or
by removal of the patient from the influences
under which he incurred the disorder. This disease,
like caries and many other ailments, is prevalent
only among civilized races living under artificial
conditions; barbarous nations breathing pure air and
eating simple food enjoy immunity from its ravages.
It is sometimes fatal, but more frequently to the
physician than to the patient.

Anu

Hey Anu.....

It's very suprising and shocking to know what you think about love.....i am really shocked when i read yr reply.....that's not at all true dear....from the post what i can guess is that someone has really hurted you a lot.....but that doesn't mean that there is nothing called love....it's there dear.....just think about ur childhood....whenever you used to get angry and say that i am not going to eat today or so and then your Mom or Dad comes to yo saying look Anu if you are not going to eat then even we won't eat and try other tactis to make sure that you won't sleep w/o having ur food.....or try to rember when you have been caught by fever...and then yr parents take you to the doctor and stands there by the side of you looking at you, praying for you trying their best to make sure that you recover from the disease asap....or try remembring the moment when y r not feeling well during yr exams and yr friends come to you with notes helping you to clear the exams.....what will you say all these feelings....isn't it love?????does it hurts you?????have it ever hurts ur body or ur soul????? no my dear no......true love never hurts.....
what hurts can't be love that will be just a feeling which you say that it is love but that's something else.....and i don't think you should make ur openion about such a nice thing based on that something which you tried to see as love......
that's my point...... if you say what i have writen is wrong then i can say that yes Anu jee you are right and there is nothing called love.....

For god sake the case of male-female love and love talk is overblown; i do not know how to define this but the originality of human nature has been trampled by the media we face around us-whose contents are not controlled by us.
Especially in the west, do people understand the urge to empathize within their own family with their old parents...i doubt it.
Okay let me admit i was not raised getting encouragement to make girlfriends and say "i love you" a hundred times a day;i would not say it now that i have the option of extra freedom because i think i have better understanding of human relationships; I enjoy the company of my female friends (some of whom i would like to dote) but i would not distort things by naming relations and create biases. If i am not putting it straight let me state things get even murkier when you develop wisdom and i feel better i have not been doing something which i would relinquish upon becomimg wiser; i think i like our culture which has created some soulful romantic and mystical music in the vacuum the media is trying to take advantage of;
okay everybody is a little confused so i should stop, but i hope you got the message.

Anuradha Ji and Rathee Ji,

What both of you are talking is indeed a love; but it can be termed as 'pyar/ishq/mohabbat'.
Love doesn't only exists in between a male and a female - there are some more forms of it:

-Love with children is 'sneh' - 'Vansh'
-Love with equal ones is 'pyar' - 'Dansh'
-Love with seniors is 'shraddha' - 'Hans'
-Love with God is 'Bhakti' - 'Paramhans'

'Love' is so great that it can be done with anybody and everybody.
Or maybe, I think so!!
