Population: 13,000,000 or 85% of Haryan population of 16,000,000 (1992 SIL), including 107,000 Haryanvi proper (1997 IMA).

Region: Haryana; Punjab; Karnataka; Delhi; Himachal Pradesh; Uttar Pradesh.

Alternate names : BANGARU, BANGER, BANGRI, BANGRU, HARYANI, HARIYANI, HARIANI, DESARI, CHAMARWA
Dialects BANGARU PROPER, DESWALI, BAGDI, MEWATI.

Classification: Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Central zone, Western Hindi, Unclassified.

Comments: 'Bagdi' is the variety used around Fatehabad and Sirsa, and south of Bhiwani (distinct from the Wagdi language in southern Rajasthan). Needs comparison with Bagri. Intelligibility among dialects is good, but Haryanvi is not intelligible with Hindi, the closest language. Closest to Braj Bhasha. 92% lexical similarity between dialects. Hindi is used as second language; proficiency higher among educated speakers than uneducated ones. Some bilingual ability in all social groups for education and contact with non-Haryanvi speakers. At home and for religion. All ages. Positive attitudes toward Haryanvi.

'Bangru' now used for speakers in Jind area. 'Khadar' is used by speakers in Jind to refer to the speech of Rohtak and Sonipat. Investigation needed: intelligibility, attitudes toward north Rajasthan.

Literacy rate in second language: 55% Hindi.
