In my opinion the divide is fueled based upon religious lines especially after the Indira Gandhi's doing in 1984. It was mainly the jat sikhs that pushed for Khalistan.

I am a 'quarter sikh' as my paternal grandmother was sikh (dadi). It was an arranged marriage between my grandparents in 1920's. It was a custom among some jat families that the eldest son became a sikh (we can discuss the reasons in some other thread). As a result during those times the relations between the sikhs and hindus were not as distant as they now are.

Constant Sardarji jokes, Khalistan movement with aid of pakistan etc has now build a divide. There is also a question of language, as most sikhs speak punjabi...and most hindu jats speak hindi. (haryanvi hindi if you may).
