Why is the moon so popularly called Chanda-mama?

I dont know.
But he is the only popular "good" mama, o/w indian mythology is filled with "bad" mamas...kans mama, sakuni mama. Even today we call the policeman lovingly "mama".

This is why in our culture this is considred bad if wife's brother lives with us.At least Jattu culture does not approve this. In south the mama of a girl has the first right to marry her...again totally unacceptable in north India.
to a lady the closest is always her brother and while singing 'lori' for her kid, its she who gave the name of mama to the moon...this is what I can think..
