Jat word first time documented was in Sindh(Pakistan may be 11th century(May be 8th). After that jats migrated to north-east, more fertile area of punjab and Ganga jamuna basin latter on. And all the jats were Hindu Jats at that time. In mogul period jats who converted to islam are known as Mulla jats and they still keeps their same sirnames. Most of them are in west punjab area, which is in Pakistan today. You can still find them in Meerut and MujjafarNagar in UP, India. Many Jats in Punjab converted to Sikhism during gurus time and specially during Mahraja Ranjit Singh's time.
So in today's world in Indian subcontinet three kinds of jats, Hindu Jats, Sikh Jats and Mulla jats. But there are small number of jats in Ukrain, Russia and even in Iraq as well, who migrated as part of Islamic armies from Sindh area.

Hi!

Initially, the differences were primarily religious, and over time, cultural as well.

Why we have taken a restrictive definition for the purpose of the site is to prevent ourselves from spreading too thin, and to ensure that cultural similarity is high enough to promote easy interaction.
