Please read the below message to protect your mobile handsets & SIM cards.

If you receive a phone call and your mobiles phone displays ACE-?
on the screen DON'T ANSWER THIS CALL - END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY. IF YOU ANSWER THE CALL, YOUR PHONE WILL BE INFECTED BY THIS VIRUS. This virus will erase all IMEI and IMSI information from both your phone and your SIM card, which will make your phone unable to connect with the telephone network. You will have to buy a new phone. This information has been confirmed by both Motorola and Nokia. There are over 3 million mobile phones being infected by this virus in USA now.You can also check this news in the CNN web site.

Dear Friends,

Why are you shooting the messenger. Thanks Seema Ji for sharing this information but like Vivek said it is a hoax or a false rumour. There is no virus that can affect a cell phone (atleast not yet :) ).

One easy way of finding out that this information is false lies in the article itself. It says that the virus erases all information from the SIM card and has affected 3 million cell phones in the USA. But cell phones in the USA do NOT have a SIM card (as they don't use GSM technology)!!

Ankita Ji,

I think you are right and some models have been introduced in the USA with GSM technology. But I don't believe it is wide-spread. I maybe wrong though.

But coming back to the point of a cellphone virus. That is most definitely a hoax. Worst case scenario could be that you might get an SMS message on your phone, but an SMS message is simply a text message and does not have the capability of ruining your cellphone. The hoax uses the analogy of a computer virus which might come to your computer as an email attachment. When someone opens the "infected" email, the attachment runs a script on the computer which causes the computer to get "infected" by the "virus". But this is totally untrue for a cellphone because SMS messages are text only and they do not get "executed" like a compuer program. Besides cellphones do not have the capability of "executing" scripts like computers do.
