View Full Version : Some recent Statistics on Haryana.

The numbers are taken from Interner sites including those of reputed Newspapers like Indian Express etc.

1. 77.5% of households donot have toilets (

i guess as large population lives in villages)- this therefore may not be a matter related to mass ignorance on health hygiene or poverty, but is a convenience to people living in open village environment.

2. 2.29% of Haryana's population has education upto graduate or higher level.

3. 0.5% population has had technical education in the state.

4.Haryana's per capita domestic product is Rs

12,158 (1997 figures)- next only to Goa and

Punjab.

5. Haryana ranks 30th among all states in INdia on sex ratio (861 females/1000 males.

6. Haryana has recorded sharpest decline in the country during last 10 years in the # of girl children in 0-6 age group (820/1000boys)

The figures on sex ratio become interesting in shedding light on existing social and traditional values as:

Despite sharp declines in # girl children, dowry problem has not followed a similar declining trend. Some government analysts say the sex ratio has gotten skewed because of male migration from surrounding states- otherwise dowry would have disappeared.

Urmila ji,

U have mentioned some devastating facts about Haryana.
Most of them are mentioned earlier on this site, but no one is doing anything at least, expect mentioning it!

These facts present a very gloomy picture.
But what next ? Thanks to Urmila for writing these statistics. But what we need to do as a community that makes tall cliams ?
Let me add some positive statistics too here
1. 98 % of house holds in Haryana have a pacca house.
2. 40 % of households in villages have a television.
These facts represent outstanding achievements. But sadly a medieval outlook about girls in the midest of this affluence.
Thanks

I have little doubt on the below statement, as I know India have only 26 States or Author counting UT's also as State??????????????????????????

Dear Urmila Ji
In those parts of Haryan where the water table is shallow and where there are handpumps in the house for drinking water it is not likely nor desirable that toilets based on the septic tank sytem be set up in the absence of a sewage system, for they will definitely contaminatre the ground water within two years and the Gastro intestinal disease cycle will establish itself both amongst the inhabitants and the livestock.

Where the water table is below 100 feet it may be praqcticable to set up properly insulated septic tank type toilets. But by far the most desirable system would be a sytem designed especially for our uniques cultural and social habits. An enclosed dry toilet in the Gher or in the fields designed so that it incorporates, in addition to human waste, also fresh soil, ash, earthworms and kitchen waste into a proper anaerobic composting unit. The tube could be worked with a manually turned worm gear and a screw shaft to keep moving the waste along till it is converted completely into high grade manure. To make this happen it requires only that a team of mechanical and soil biology people find a grant and build a basic prototype . If you can find such people I can arrange a detailed briefing for them to get to work.

Dear All,

I congratulate and thank Urmila Ji for bringing out an important topic for discussion. Urmila Ji, please keep it up.

I also congratulate Mr. Amit Dahiya for coming out with some solution/suggestion. I remember when a student in 7 or 8th grade, I read a toilet made which could be moved after being used and the waste got covered with the mud by moving the toilet. While it may not be possible to have this kind of system installed at home it certainly be done in the fields, thus making environment better.

Further, these problems are not only of Haryana, but most part of our nation. I once again congratulate all the contributers. Kindly keep it up.

Hello Mr. Dahiya,
You seem to have some good ideas. In my opinion, you should try talking the idea with people in the concerned field just to make sure you are going ahead with the best of plans- then, you should put your ideas in front of the government by writing to them because they are the ones that have the necessary infrastructure and money to implement it on large scale- which is what our goal is. Publicise your idea by writing in to as many sources as you can such as local departments in various districts, local newspapers etc. Posting on Jatland is also a good idea as you may never know, the right person might just be here!

Dear All
Good topic & good points of view.
We started 20 years ago a simple method in our village- by digging -a hole - boring pipe.
It is working & not so costly.
But common person has no buget- money or know how. even they have money this is the last thing on their mind.
Only a good goverment with aid from world bank can do this job.
But most important people have no drinking water. How the toilet will work.
THINK ABOUT WATER PROBLEM FRIST.

Dear All,

A very good topic. First of all thanks to Urmilaji for bringing up this matter on Jatland. I do agree with Dudeeji that drinking water should be our first priority but as far as what should be given attention first drinking water or toilets is concerned, in my view the issue differs with each village. Some villages have good drinking water facility and needs toilets. Like in our village, there is no problem of drinking water and toilets are necessary. It is essential for our old age Tais and Chachis reason because due to poor eye-sight, they can not go early in the morning and if the need be, they sometime got hurt in the dark and I feel toilets are necessary for them. In villages where drinking water is a problem, we should give drinking water priority.
