Monica Joon of Delhi, who set a new National discus throw record in the under-18 category, hurls the disc on the second day of the Junior National athletic meet in Shimoga on Wednesday.
Monica flung the disc (one-kg) to a new National record of 42.44 metres in her fourth and last throw in the girls' under-18 category. On her second throw, she had touched 41.38 metres. The earlier mark of 41.01m in the inter-zonal at Kanpur in October 2001 also stood in Monica's name. Arpita Rai, the local hope messed up her very first throw, going beyond the sector, and then on was tentative to finish with a silver at 33.36m, edging past Kerala girl Nisha Mary John (32.70m).
