Were the Jats hindus ?.

This is the view of our sikh jat brother.

IS ANY ONE AGREE ?

---------------------------------------------

This is an important question since it is used to give by hindus to justify called all sikhs as hindus since they come from a hindu background. This is non-sensical but still many hindus believe this.

With the coming of the british the religions of punjab were either listed as islam or hinduism. Even though the british had taken the sovereignity of Punjab from the sikhs yet they still listed Sikhs as hindus for at least a few decades after their takeover of punjab. Since the worship of those jats who were neither muslim or sikh, was sultani they were classified as hindus. At this time ( 1849 - 1901 ) their Sikh Jats were still less the 60 % of the total Jat population in the Central Punjab. ( equated to roughly modern punjab plus lahore, Gujranwala and sialkot districts ). Although the other 40 % were mainly non-sikh sultanis, they were classified as hindus. When the hindu Arya Samaj started to aggressively oppose Sikhism, the very people they tried to rely on for muscle, the 'hindu'( ie Sultani ) jats of the central punjab were the least responsive. The only success of the Arya Samaj had amongst the Jats was with the Haryana and UP Jats who had already become more hinduised.

Some figures - central punjab - Ambala, Hoshiarpur, Jullundur, Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Lahore, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Montgomery, Lyallpur and Sheikhupura Districts plus states of Patiala, Malerkotla, Kalsia, Faridkot, Nabha.

Number of Sikh jats and hindu jats in central punjab in 1881 and 1931
--------------1881 -----------------------------1931
Sikh Jats -- 1,083,708- 58.17 %-------------2,016,709 -- 90.51 %
Hindu Jats -- 779,062-- 41.83 %------------- 211,358 - 9.49 %

By selected districts

------------1881 ------------------------------------------- 1931
------------sikh Jats---- hindu Jats --------------Sikh Jats --- Hindu Jats
Jullundur-- 56,407 ------- 87,762 ----------------- 160,286 ----- 12,574
Ludhiana--- 102,447 ------ 95,565 ----------------- 211,682 ----- 3,500
Amritsar -- 151,107 ------ 16,843 ----------------- 206,751 ----- 1,717
Lahore ---- 79,783 ------ 4,391 ----------------- 122,871 ----- 3,502
Gurdaspur -- 46,079 ------ 38,040 ----------------- 100,312 ----- 3,500
Sialkot ---- 26,067 ------ 69,080 ----------------- 65,630 ----- 23,948
Gujranwala - 16,849 ------ 23,373 ----------------- 35,339 ------ 5,126
Ferozepur - 136,154 ------ 23,787 ---------------- 231,532 ------ 16,699
Patiala state 265,001 --- 171,102 ---------------- 362,572 ----- 77,945

The still large numbers of hindu jats in Patiala state was due to the fact that it contained a large chunk of haryana.

The enumeration by caste was stopped during the 'war' census of 1941. There is no doubt that hindus jats were continuing to become Sikh jats upto 1947. In Ludhiana district which has 3,500 hindus jats in 1931 I have yet to come across a hindu jat there. Apart from the hilly areas of Hoshiarpur and the southern fringe of Ferozepur there is no such thing as a hindu jat in punjab.

According to my knowledge, Sikhism has come out of Hinduism, as the Khalsa was an army made to protect Hinduism and Hindu interests from evil Moslems, and Sikhism in itself is just 300 years old, just like Buddhism it evolved itself to become a complete distinct religion. Sikhs are maintaining this identity of them very well and it is worth appreciating.
Thus all the Jats were always Hindus, and those who adopted Khalsa became Sikhs, what I do not understand is that what are those Sikhs who cut their hair, what Jats are they????
