Hi All:

The issue of us doing our part for the community comes
up many times on this site. If I remember correctly, most recently
a post by a lady Suman generated a lot of discussion
around that topic.

The fact is that there are many within the community that quietly
go about doing their part. They never seek applause or recognition
in any form. Nor are they disheartened by lack of immediate support.
They just go about doing what they do knowing that they make
a difference in their own way.

Some obvious examples here on Jatland that we are well
familiar with are: Dr Birbal for his education related quidance;
Mr. Ram Arya for his school work; Chacha Rajendra Kalkhunde
for his Cancer hospital; Mr. Dudi for his literary endeavors;
Ravi Chaudhary (and others) for their propagation of Jat
history...and others that I am missing out on.

The key thing to note is that the range of efforts will range
immensely: some people have knowledge; some have money; some
have time. Some go for large undertakings, some take on smaller
roles, and yet others do their bit by supporting the efforts of others.

The only really common thing is that they all do what
they can with the monetary/intellectual resources that they have.

While modesty is indeed great, I think we should highlight the
efforts of others and those of ourselves. This will help
to generate a sense of community feeling where we will realise that
we together can achieve and that we as a community do care
about others in our community. I think wanting to do good
is an infectious feeling, so learning about others doing it is
highly desirable.

Towards that end I wanted to bring up a few instances of such
efforts that I am aware of, and felt that others might want to
share.
Mission Baljeet Singh's Cancer Treatment
========================================

On 17th May 2005 the following article was published on
tribune.

Poor cancer patient seeks help
Tribune News Service

Rohtak, May 16
Too poor to raise Rs 1 lakh for a surgery he needs immediately, he awaits death
virtually silently for he lost his speech after doctors removed his vocal chords
two years ago when his malignancy was diagnosed.

Baljeet Singh (48) is a resident of Bhatgaon village in nearby Sonipat district.
He has two daughters of marriageable age, but neither a job nor land to make th
e two ends meet.

He was diagnosed of cancer in 2003. Doctors at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute
, New Delhi, removed his vocal chords to save his life hoping that the malignanc
y would not recur.

But recently doctors told him that the malignancy had returned and his lower rig
ht jaw would have to be removed or he would die within weeks. Doctors at the loc
al Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences say the surgery would hopefully g
ive him another brief lease of life.

Unable to speak from his bed, Baljeet pointed to his two daughters and indicated
that he needed another year or so to arrange to marry off his daughters. His da
ughters hope that some good samaritans will raise donations for his surgery.

One member of BAJA saw this article and brought it to the
attention of the group. BAJA (Bay Area Jats Association) is a
group of about 50 Jat families in the San Francisco Bay Area in
California.

It was immediately decided within the group that this would be
a good endeavor for the group.One member's father living in Sonepat
close to Bhatgaon went to the village to confirm and verify the
details published in the paper. These turned out to be true and valid.
Baljeet has 4 children, two of them girls of marriagable age. They
are extremely poor and his wifeis illiterate.

Group immediately went about collecting pledges from members. Within
a day and a half there was a substantial commitment. The goal was
set at 1Lakh rupees. Due to the urgency of the situation, one of
the group members decided to have 1Lakh rupees made available in
Delhi the very next day, even before an equivalent amount
had been pledged within the group.

Next day the money was made available to Baljeet's wife, and
Baljeet is in the process of getting his treatment finalized.
Baljeet's treatment and well being is still awaited. BAJA
wishes him and his family the best and hopes he makes
a complete recovery.

Mission: Vir Sanghvi Ko Sahi Rasta Dikhao
=============================================

Some time back there was an incident with BJP minister
Sahib Singh Verma and an airline. According to the media
Sahib Singh Verma had used abusive and high handed language
with some airline staff.

Vir Sanghvi is a nationally renowned journalist whose articles
appear in the Hindustan Times. Writing about this incident
under an article named "Jet Vs. Jat" (I no longer have the link
to the article) Vir Sanghvi sterotyped ALL JATS as behaving
like this.

A few of us Jats noticed this and took offense to such
generalisation. We didn't condone Sahib Singh behaviour but
found Vir Sanghvi's comments about Jats in general to be in
bad taste.

We circulated this news article amongst our group, who individually
responded via the Hindustan Times site.

This resulted in a subsequent apology and correction from
Vir Sanghvi in a follow up article.

Mission: Help Motivate and Reward Students
==========================================

o Every year Dr. Rajvir Dahiya of Bay area, from Village
Bhidraan, rewards top performers from the govt. schools
from many villages around his area. He makes a substantial
financial commitment in this effort.

o One of our BAJA members that I am aware of does something
similar for the students in his village back home.

o Other people that I am aware of help needy students
with books and fees in my own village in Haryana.

Mission: Help Propagate Good Ideals Within the Community
================================================== =======

o A group of individuals that I know
sponsors Arya Samaj activities within the village to
fight ignorance, superstition etc within the communities.

While some of these may seem small efforts, I think
every little bit counts. Please share all such endeavors
with the rest of the group.

Dear Raj,

Really impressed. What you have written reinforces my belief that even if each one of us (or a small group of people) can help change the life of ONE JAT, life would have some meaning. This I have written in some earlier post and termed it as the POWER OF ONE. There are many individuals who work silently and believe in what Milton wrote a long time ago "They also serve who stand and wait". I have no doubt that BAJA will succeed in making a difference in the life of many JATS.

But it is important for members to inform others as to what efforts have been attempted and realised. Even attempts made and rejected. I would request the different associations that JATS have formed in various parts of the world to make it a point to inform all members through this portal. It would take some effeort but then JATS are known for hard work.

This will surely give confidence to others to do something to help out another JAT. I find this approach much more productive than attempting grand 'Mission Statements', 'Vision Documents' and efforts to have a 'World JAT Leader' etc.

Regards,

JS Malik
