This movie provokes a lot of thoughts. It really makes you think. You think when you are watching the movie, and you continue thinking when the movie is over. You think what kind of a jackass you are to be watching this crap. You think what exactly must have prompted the director to make a movie like this. You think of all the wonderful ways you can torture the director if you ever meet him, and how much you'll enjoy doing it. You think, hell, you can be a director too.

So what happens when a person, extremely underpriviliged when it comes to imagination, gets really inspired after watching some Ramagopal Verma's movies on underworld, looks at his image in the mirror while shaving, and says, "If Verma can do it, you can do it too" (he points to the image in the mirror with his forefinger) ? Well, you get a movie like Ansh.

The director of the movie had noble intentions. He really wanted to make the next blockbuster which will replace the name of Satya from the mind of an average movie goer. Something just went wrong somewhere. Actually, that thing went wrong right in the begining of the movie and continued to remain wrong till the very end. The story begins with an honest, square shooting, bent-on-to-remove-crime-and-criminals kinda cop (Om puri), who cares two hoots about politicians and as a result gets transferred all the time. (Isn't that the height of originality?). This guy then gets moved to Bombay. There he teams up with another cop who had resigned to fight the crime as a common man (Ashutosh Rana) and an underworld don (Abbas). The underworld don, Abbas, looks as menacing as Baby Guddu in a frock. You actually feel like picking him up and feeding him milk. Can you guess how Abbas became the Don - a criminal? Well, you can't even if you think the whole weekend under the influence of weed. He became a don because he was a victim of the wrongs that our evil society keeps on hurling towards innocents (Now that's 'orginal' with a capital 'O'). He commited his first crime in order to arrange money for his sister's dowry (the originality continues). His grandpa (Alok Nath) was a freedom fighter. Alok Nath, in his quivering, whiny voice (do we see another A.K. Hangal in the making?) is so irritating at times that you feel like wringing his neck and ending his misery permanently. There is another a$swipe. I don't know his name. He looks like Shahrukh Khan but is much taller. He is the don's sidekick. This guy's acting talents, especially when he was mouthing mumbaiyya dialogues (the 'apun', 'jaanay ka', 'maarnay ka' kind), could have posed a serious competition to the emotional renditions of an actor playing the 47th soldier in your local Ramleela's Vaanar Sena. This guy needs to be shipped as far away from Bollywood as possible as he is a really bad influence on other actors. You can see the peak of the director's imagination when you realize that the three guys, the don, the cop and the ex-cop, are named Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev (Can ya feel the spirit of patriotism just pounding on your temples?). All three of them get hanged in the end, after they have killed all the villians. The movie has around 10 villians (known faces), who all die within 30 seconds at the end of the movie. The movie has also revived the dying art of introducing a hero by making him turn in slow motion and then focussing the camera on his face, his eyes spewing flames. Bipasha Basu, the heroine, would have contributed more to the movie if she had served tea to the performers during the shootings. The movie gives you the distinct feeling that it was made by around 18 directors, each one shooting 10 minutes in complete isolation, without communicating with each other and finally all the pieces were joined.

This movie is a definite watch if you are contemplating suicide and are still not sure. You'll die in the end.
