Journal written in English. CAN 141:165039 AN 2004:562193 CAPLUS

Abstract

Tungsten oxide whiskers were prepd. on a tungsten thin film by oxidn. with H2O and a subsequent annealing treatment at a temp. of over 900° in vacuum. The tungsten oxide formed by oxidn. was transformed into smooth, straight whiskers with a monoclinic-cryst. structure after the vacuum annealing treatment. The whiskers showed an oxygen-deficient stoichiometry and a cryst. structure consistent with W18O49, which was dependent on the annealing temp. and vacuum used. The competition between the whisker growth and the dissocn. of W oxide has a significant effect on the crystal shape, as well as the size of the whiskers. A change in the binding state during whisker formation indicates that some of the dissocd. W oxide contributes to whisker formation and that cryst. whiskers are grown at nucleation sites through this process.

Airborne tungsten oxide whiskers in a hard-metal industry. Preliminary findings. Sahle, W.; Laszlo, I.; Krantz, S.; Christensson, B. Aerosol Div., Natl. Inst. Occup. Health, Solna, Swed. Annals of Occupational Hygiene (1994), 38(1), 37-44. CODEN: AOHYA3 ISSN: 0003-4878. Journal written in English. CAN 121:64486 AN 1994:464486 CAPLUS

Abstract

In spite of an increased risk of death due to pulmonary fibrosis among workers in the hard-metal industry, only one other publication (W. Sahle, 1992) has reported the presence of airborne fibers in the working environment. In this study, airborne tungsten oxide fibers are obsd. in such an environment. The fibers are formed and released to the environment as a byproduct during the redn. stage of the raw material.

Growth of multineedles of tungsten caused by reaction of tungsten oxide with acetone
Okuyama, Fumio. Dep. Fine Meas., Nagoya Inst. Technol., Nagoya, Japan. Journal of Applied Physics (1975), 46(8), 3255-9. CODEN: JAPIAU ISSN: 0021-8979. Journal written in English. CAN 83:124178 AN 1975:524178 CAPLUS

Abstract

The growth of cryst. needles of w on the w substrate through chem. reaction between vacuum-deposited w oxide and acetone vapors of (3-5) ´ 10-6 torr was investigated with a field emission and a transmission electron microscope. A large no. of w needles were grown by heating the substrate, onto which w oxide had been deposited, initially at a .apprx.1500-1800°K in acetone and then at .apprx.2300-2600°K in an acetone-free vacuum. The needles were mostly [110] oriented and their d. was .apprx.107/cm2. It is believed that the needle growth was closely related to the redn. of the oxide by C provided from acetone through the thermal cracking.
