It is often quoted in all newspapers that USA is the oldest democracy and India the largest. This shows lack of awareness on the part of writers. In India we had republics in the form of janpadas for 1000s of years. Here is a link, which gives a good description of democracy in ancient India;

Our Sarva Khap was also part of the same democratic tradition. May be west should change its views about democracy in India. Above link describes how Brahmans promoted the role of kings.
