Department of Veterinary Microbiology
The Opportunity:

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Saskatchewan seeks a highly qualified candidate to conduct research leading to a M.Sc. degree.
Areas of Study:

Epidemiology of Pig Salmonellosis. Evaluation of Diagnostic Methods.
Project Abstract:

Detection of infected pigs at the slaughterhouse may be a useful tool for classifying herds according to levels of infection and eventually decreasing cross-contamination at the abattoir. We will sample pigs from different slaughter plants and collect basic information on each pig in order to investigate the presence of Salmonella infection and determine the best diagnostic method. The project’s major objectives are to 1) assess the accuracy of enriched cultures, PCR and serology for detection of Salmonella infection, with or without shedding, from pigs at Saskatchewan slaughter facilities, and 2) study the role that seropositive pigs may have on the excretion of Salmonella organisms at the slaughter plant. In addition, we will obtain information on major Salmonella serotypes involved and antimicrobial resistance trends in Saskatchewan that will be useful as prior information for future studies on salmonellosis in the province.
