Why tragedies like this keep recurring?

Meerut: 100s of people, including women and children died and many more injured when a huge fire broke out at a trade fair at the Victoria Park, bang in the heart of the city. (2006)

Kumbakonam (Thanjavur): 94 children were burnt alive in a blaze
in a primary school in this district of Tamil Nadu. (2004)

Delhi: As many as 59 lives were lost in when fire broke out in Uphaar picture hall during the screening of a movie, Border. (1997)

Sirsa: Around 500, including children, were charred to death and celebrations turned into mourning as fire swept through annual day functions in a school in Dabwal. (1995)

....and many more that escaped my memory. Even bigger tragedy is that many of them might have been avoided.

Ye to bilkul sahi kahi bhai , lekin isme main ye zaroor jodna chahoonga ki HUMARI YAADASHT BHI BAHUT KAMZOR HAI AUR 1 MAHINEY MEIN SAB BHOOL JAYENGEY KI MEERUT MEIN KYA HUA THA .

Waise sirf paiso se kaam nahi karwaya jaata hum ek doosrey ke liye bhaicharey mein bahut rules todte hain ( ye bhi ek kadwa sach hai).

I don't know how to react to this particular tragedy because my older brother was an exhibitor there but due to poor attendence of public he decided to retract from the show early on April 4th alongwith his 4 employees and they are all safe so sefishly I feel relieved , at the same time this is a very painful tragedy for everybody.

It was really a dehumaninzing sight to see those charred burnt out areas of the Mela and the obvious carnage to bodies! To be charred to death....women and children?
The fair actually being about 'Consumers'? ('consumed to flames' is more like it!...) It reflects on the huge ground that needs to be covered and goals to be accomplished by our so called 'India shining'...and before we start making those 'the next super power' tall calls!!!

Shameful and what a waste of humankind of a proud nation....and then on top of that to see the bloody *#^* Mayawatis and other political wannabes jumping at this opportunity to quickly denounce the present govt and order a wildgoose inquiry, all in the hope to make their so called paths clearer for the next elections.......totally disgusting and pathetic!
...Wouldn't follow the trodden path, but shall leave a blazing trail!!!...

Another aspect of the tragedy was how media covered the incident.

While, quite a few English channels including NDTV 24x7 and CNN-IBN refrained to show pictures of charred corpses, almost all Hindi news channels, in a race to grab more eyeballs, brought really horrific and disturbing pics straight to our drawing rooms -- gross commercialisation of a tragedy.

Same was the case after Delhi blasts last year, 2004 Tsunami and Gujarat earthquake in 2001 where society's wary watchdog metamorphosed into a vulture suddenly, literally seeking its pound of flesh -- so what if it was human flesh.

Notably, international channels like CNN and BBC have different standards of covering such incidents which depend on geographical location of the tragedy.

If it's London blast or 9/11 or Madrid bombings the thumb rule is that they won't show the dead bodies, however if it's some suicide attack in Iraq or earthquake in Pakistan, corpses are subjeted to full public view.

I think it a gross disservice to the deceased and a violation of her/his and her/his family's right to privacy.

We may run the risk becomin blase when tragedy, no matter how enormous, will fail to evoke tender human emotions.

Nothing wrong with showing the corpses

Yes these are horrifying pictures but I can not 100% agree with Daksh that it was done for mere RATINGS . I think that's the only way to show what was the extent of this tragedy , disrespect to a dead body is not worse than disrespect shown by corrupt officials & greedy organizers to that body, when it was alive.

The problem is that overkill leads to publics numbness towards such things, I think media should rather try to show these pictures/videos more startegically to round up all All these corrupt politicians & officials who refuse to value human life.

as far as CNN & BBC is concerned , those channels are biased and all suffer from phycological disorder of liberalism an it's not the geographical location that affects there coverage rather it's more about who is getting killed ?

    Thumbs down Meerut Tragedy

THE REPETITION OF SUCH INCIDENCES IS DUE TO THAT ," IN A SHORT SPAN OF LIFE, HUMAN WISH TO COLLECT INFINITE AMOUNT OF MONEY"

    And the latest development is....

We Indians are used to see cosmetics being applied in a certain pattern by various govts after each and every tragedy with human error in its root. One of them (yawn) is transfer of the top officials of the district administration.

Same had to happen in Meerut and it did. Mulayam Govt today ordered the transfer of the DM and SSP of the district.

Ironically, the man set to be the new SSP of Meerut -- Navneet Sikera -- is the same chap who himself was transferred from Varanasi after the recent blasts as he was busy attending a function in Safai -- Mulayam's native village -- when people were dying in the holy city.
