    NEEM – The ‘Desi’ Pharmacy

    NEEM – The ‘Desi’ Pharmacy

We all know the importance of Neem tree and its various usages under Ayurvedic system of medicine. All parts of Neem – its roots, hard skin, tiny branches, leaves, flowers, its fruit (nimbouli – both ripe and dry), its various types of juices have traditionally been a source of better health. Its dry leaves are used to protect the seeds and grains from attack of worms and pests and removal of mosquitos and flies from the scene by producing a smoke by burning process. I am putting this thread in this “Health & Fitness” forum as it relates to our traditional knowledge of keeping ourselves fit by adopting our ancient system of medicine which, unfortunately, is under attack from external forces and multinational drug companies, attempting to patent our common knowledge and get all monetary benefits. In Western Hemisphere and Latin America, this tree is also known as “Azadirachta indica”.

Swami Omanand Saraswati has a special page under ‘WIKI’ section of this site. Apart from being a great Jat leader and a social reformer, he was an Ayurvedic Vaidya of world-wide repute. Swamiji has written several books on various Ayurvedic herbs including on Neem, Aak, Peepal, Badd (banyan tree), Siras, the common salt, Haldi, cure of snakebite and scorpion-bite etc. I am putting here some extracts (in Hindi) from his book “Neem”. It describes the various qualities of three kinds of Neem tree : the bitter (kaddwa) Neem, Bakayan and Meetha Neem.
