Revival of Jat comunity in DC/VA/MD area: A Picnic

    What?
Jats in Greater Washington area (DC, VA and DC) have agreed to come together to revive and strengthen the regional Jat community. A kick-off picnic is scheduled to be held at 2:00pm on 15th July (Saturday) where all of you are cordially invited to eat, meet and greet with other fellows. Interested people are requested to go through all details.

    Where?
Burke Lake park, 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, Virginia. Burke Lake park has nice picnic spots with general amenities like benches, BBQ grills, volleyball courts and ample empty space. Directions to place could be taken from http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/b...directions.htm , more precise directions will be provided later.

    More Details:

Everyone who is interested in attending the picnic or interested in being part of our community (even if they can’t attend this particular event) should become member of our yahoo-group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jats_dc/ . Minor logistics details will be sent to the group, this post is just for publicity purpose.

Since we don’t have funds to start with, food will be arranged on pot-luck basis rather than catering. People have (partial) freedom to bring whatever they want but uniform distribution of responsibility will be planned through internal communication in the yahoo-group. People are welcome even if they are not in position to bring anything but communication with us well beforehand is strongly requested.

Again, since we don’t have funds to start with, we plan to have picnic in un-reservable area of the park. Which means picnic spot is free, to be occupied by earlier birds (I plan to be there as soon as park opens) but without any shelter (which might be little problematic if it rains). In case forecast is rain, 2-3 days before the event, there might be little modification in the arrangement which will be well communicated with everyone.

This event is also meant to gauge the strength and interest of the community, to discuss long term goals and to formalize the coordination process little bit for future events. If everything works out fine, we plan to have regular events in future e.g. Diwali function etc. And since money is needed for arranging any good event, a minimal amount (not more than 5$ per head) has been suggested by senior members to be collected from attendees.

As you know we also have yearly picnics in our friendly neighborhood (New Jersey), it would be good for us to work together. People are requested to spread the word around in your contact circle (in PA, NC area too) and those who can’t make for 1st July NJ picnic should definitely consider attending 15th July DC picnic, and those who are coming to 1st July picnic must come for 15th July too).

The process of contacting people and planning has been underway for last one month and so far around 30 individuals have expressed desires to come. Some people are coming from NC too, like Anju Singhji.

Once again, interested people must contact us beforehand because:
    1) Pot-luck arrangement needs proper prior planning
    2) People coming from out of Fairfax county would have to pay 8$ for parking, which can be avoided if you can park your car at someone’s place outside and then come to the park in someone else’s car.
    3) For people coming from far away (lets say Australia for joke’s sake) and want to stay, we need to plan hosting arrangements beforehand.

Finally, I am just putting this post here but actual underground work wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Anjulie Dalal and her family, Anmol Rattan and Ajey Bargoti; these people will also be helping in further work. Thanks to Har Swarup Singh, Rajender Singh, Vidya Fozdar, Anju Singh and Aditya Ahlawat for valuable suggestions.

Thanks Jatlanders for over-whelming response:-)))... Am reviving the thread just in case if somebody from DC area missed it. If they want to join us there is still time. If anyone happen to come to know of it anytime before 15th, you are always welcome, but just give me a call (240-620-4807). People start threads like "anyone in VA???" etc but when something real is happening they are not seen anywhere near.
Planning is underway but wouldn't bother you about details. So far 37 are confirmed definitely, and 51 people have tentatively agreed to come.

    Good job DC team!

    Good Luck

    Dear Vinod,

Good luck with your initiative. I am sure the local community will respond in strength to your call. Take some pictures and post them on this site as well as that on ajata org.

Convey our good wishes and regards to all the community members. May be next time some of us from NJ might join in to meet our brothers and sisters in your area.

    Hi All,

Thanks to all volunteers and community members for making AJA DC chapter’s picnic a big success. There were around 40 people in total and it was very nice to see local Jat community rejuvenated after 7 years. Here are brief minutes of the meeting and hindsight lessons

Logistically, most of the things worked out as were planned through the yahoo-group and phone calls. I had reached park in morning and was joined by other volunteers Anjulie, Anmol and Ishwar later on. People had started coming around 2:00pm and general social interaction continued till 3:00pm. By the time food has been all set on table and then people introduced themselves. As you know we had planned to have picnic in unsheltered spot (because it was free) and guess what, IT RAINED. At one point fun seemed to be spoiled and people took shelter in their cars. But foresight of some volunteers (Shashi ji had brought big covers, thanks) saved the food, and we covered all the tables. After heavy down pouring stopped we all gathered again and things resumed in normal order. Enthusiasm of people didn’t diminish by rain and joviality continued as we started eating. Kisi ne bola, saat saal ki battery charge hai barish kya kar legi… kisi ne kahan etne saare Jat milenge to barish bhi nahi hogi kya?... But in the end it was fun and unique experience.

-After that we discussed issues as were planned in agenda. Ajey, Satya ji and Rajendra ji briefed on how community used to run previously.

-Then people were asked to come forward to volunteer in future events. Instead of having formal structure of positions it was thought to be good to have team of coordinators, which includes Shashi ji, Anjulie, Ishwar, Anmol, Neha, Ajey and Har Swarup ji. Everybody would involved at idea level and these people would participate more actively. I would be happy to do overall coordination.

-Then issues regarding money were discussed. People gave feedback that this had been sensitive issue previously and funds should be gathered as less as we can manage with. Low entry fee insures more participation. We need to have some money beforehand for Diwali function so everyone was requested to donate. We could raise 189$, which is good start. We decided to have picnic only in shelter in future and we are in position to afford.

-Tentative plans for Diwali function was discussed. There are couple of option for venue like Durga temple etc. More details will be discussed through emails because it’s too early to finalize anything. Then there were long discussion on how food should be arranged, by catering or pot-luck? In the end, it was concluded that if group is small (50-60 people) pot-luck is good option because it’s cheaper and same money could be used for better purpose; also bringing home-made food is more satisfying involvement. If group is big, like more than 100, then planning for pot-luck might be cumbersome and catering could be considered.

-We were lucky to have Kul Bhushan Phoghat from NJ amongst us. He talked about NAJC organization and how such events are carried in NJ. People were requested to support marathon on 29th Oct. But the general opinion was to strengthen the local community socially.

-Then, Har Swarup ji addressed the community and shared his experiences. He also cracked lots of Jat jokes and other people too joined in. Also, thanks to Shashi ji for giving me such a nice present.

Unfortunately we couldn’t play and couldn’t have kid’s program too. Thanks a lot to Vicky and Suchie who came all prepared with lots of gazettes for entertainment program. After that we started dispersing and said adieu to each other. Everyone gave good feedback.

I would also thank to people who came from far away places- K. Phogat (NAJC chairperson) and Raj Chaudhary (mother of Indian-American Senator Satveer Chaudhary). She is active in mod-west chapter and gave valuable advices. In the end, thanks all the people who worked for this. We’ll rock again.
