Other than pixels look for optical zoom...more the optical zoom better it will be. Optical zoom give you better quality pictures compared to digital zoom.

My comments are based on experience:

Pixelwise, the companies are making a lot of money highlighting this point. But for me any Digicam with 5 mega pixels serves the purpose. Even cameras from some companies with 3 megapixels have very good results. Don't go for 7-8 megapixels ones as you'll end up maying more for same quality pictures.

As Shamsher mentioned, look for optical zoom. Go for a camera with atleast 5-6X optical zoom. Digital zoom is just another feature. It doesn't do much. It's a feature to attact customers.

Go for a camera with AA type of batteries. These days companies offer charger and batteries with cameras. The advantage of AA batteries is that they are easily available in case u run out of power. Also, you should look for rechargable AA battries with atleast 2000 mAh...the more...the better!

Go for a digicam which has both LCD screen and viewfinder. Viewfinder helps when you want the battery to run for longer hours.

Finally the companies, Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Minolta..they all are good. I would rate Nikon & Canon at the top. Sony is my least favorable brand for digicams...they may be champions in camcorder ranges but not in digicams.

I have used Nikon and Canon both..Though Nikon seems to be having more features, photo quality of a Canon is better..As Navin mentioned, buy the one with AA batteries if you dont want to worry about depleted batteries..

Buying from US would be 4-5 k cheaper but only problem might be with warranty support if you stay in India..Anyway, if you want to buy through US, check the best deals on deals2buy.com and order online. Its safe and foolproof as all online websites and stores are reputed..

And don't forget to check the reviews for cameras on http://www.steves-digicams.com/ One of the best site with detailed review of all functions in a camera..

For Quality you have to pay more.
when you are paying, you may feel happy to pay less but later you will miss a lot features and then you will think

    Hi once again
U all helped me in selecting a digi cam. Now i have the camera n need ur help in knowing some terms n deciding about the add ons. I know some but wanna know technically also :

    1) NiHM ( nickel metal hydride) Battery
    2) Alkaline battery
    3) Lithium coin battey
    4) Power adaptor

Which one i shud buy ?
    5) Macro mode
    6) Red eye reduction
    7) SD card
    8) Multimedia memory card

    Difference in 7 & 8.
Is the water proof cover really effective ? or shud i go for the normal cover ?

Camera- Canon Power Shot A 530
Its really gud for a starter. 5 MP, 4x zoom, 1 hr video recording with voice (Acc to the frame), sound recording n much more

    Thank u for ur time

NiMh is normally rechargeable battery and can be resused 1000's of time. Don't waste ur money in alkaline battery.. Lithium ion battery is for smaller cameras, the one you bought doesn't uses that.. What about power adapter?

If possible, buy Sony BCG-34HE4 Super-Quick Worldwide Battery charger. Its worldwide voltage compliant and works really good. Not sure if its avl. in delhi..or buy similar battery chargers alongwith rechargeable NiMh batteries..

SD and MMC are different technologies of storing memory. Your camera uses SD Card which is one of the popular ones.

Depends on you if your are fond of underwater photography or clicking pics while its raining..
