गोहद की रानी का जौहर {भाग -१}

यह अमर कथा सन १७८१ ईसवी में ग्वालियर के किले पर जाटों की रियासत गोहद के राणा छत्र सिंह का आधिपत्य स्थापित होने के बाद की है. {गोहद, ग्वालियर से १८-२० मील दूर उत्तर-पूर्व की ओर स्थित है}


उस वक़्त की सही तस्वीर :

मध्य भारत में चारों ओर अफरा तफरी का माहौल था, मराठा सरदार रघुनाथ राव पुणे वापस जा चुका था, और मराठों की बागडोर सरदार महादजी शिंदे उर्फ़ सिंधिया के हाथों में थी और उसने यमुना के पश्चिम वाले पूरे छेत्र के राजाओं से चौथ वसूलना फिर शुरू कर दिया. दिल्ली की तरफ जाने की उसकी हिम्मत नहीं हुई, क्योंकि सन १७७२ से दिल्ली की सेनाओं की कमान दिल्ली के वफादार और बेहतरीन फौजी कमांडर नजफ़ खान के हाथों में थी.

लेकिन इतिहास में बाजी पलटते देर नहीं लगती और सन १७८२ में नजफ़ खान की मृत्यु से दिल्ली फिर अनाथ हो गयी और मराठों की लालची नज़रें फिर उसकी तरफ उठी. कलकत्ता में बैठे अंग्रेज़ जो की धीरे-धीरे दिल्ली के कमज़ोर मुग़ल बादशाहों की औकात भांप गए थे, अन्दर ही अन्दर उस पर अपनी पूर्ण हुकूमत के सपने देखने लगे. लेकिन उनके इस भारत विजय अभियान में अभी कुछ रोड़े थे जैसे की "मैसूर का हैदर अली" और पुणे से निकले तथा मध्य और उत्तर भारत पर अधिकार किये हुए "मराठे".

इधर गोहद के राणा छत्रसिंह के साथ अंग्रेज़ थे, और गोहद में अपनी मौजूदगी दिखा कर महादजी सिंधिया को दूर रखते थे. महादजी भी अभी किसी पंगे में नहीं पड़ना चाहता था, एक चालाक लोमड़ी की तरह वह मौके की तलाश में था की कब वह अपने जानी दुश्मन, गोहद के राणा को नेस्तनाबूत कर सके. और इसका मौका उसे भरपूर मिला, लेकिन जाटों की नस्ल कुछ अलग सी, आज़ाद ख्याल और दुश्मन की गुलामी तो वे सोचते भी नहीं, ये बात वह अच्छे से समझने वाला था. ...शेष आगे

गोहद की रानी का जौहर {भाग-२}

राणा छत्रसिंह {1757-1785} गोहद का सर्वश्रेष्ठ तथा सबसे शक्तिशाली जाट शासक था. गोहद, ग्वालियर से ३२ मील उत्तर पूर्व में स्थित है, उसके शासन काल में गोहद ने नयी बुलंदिओं को छुआ. भरतपुर के बाहर जाटों का सबसे शक्तिशाली राज्य बन गया गोहद. राणा छत्रसिंह मध्य और उत्तर भारत का पहला राजा और गोहद पहला राज्य था जिसने अंग्रेजों से मित्रता स्थापित की तथा उनकी मदद से महादजी सिंधिया जैसे बड़े मराठा सेनापति को कड़ी टक्कर दी. राणा की सबसे बड़ी सफलता ग्वालियर के किले पर विजय थी. लगभग 30 वर्ष का शासनकाल गोहद के जाटों का स्वर्णिम युग कहा जायेगा.



ग्वालियर का किला सन 1781 में गोहद के राणा के कब्जे में चले जाने को मराठों ने बड़ी गंभीरता से लिया और उसे वापस लेने के लिए किसी भी हद तक जाने की ठान ली. उधर दिल्ली में नजफ़ खान की मृत्यु के बाद वहां जाने का रास्ता खुला था, अंग्रेजों ने भांप लिया था कि महादजी सिंधिया दिल्ली की तरफ जरूर जायेगा इसलिए सन 1783 ई. में उन्होंने अपनी सारी शक्ति उस तरफ ही लगा दी, और गोहद के राणा की सहायता के लिए जो फ़ौज वहां थी उसे वापस बुला लिया तथा गोहद को पूरी तरह से मराठों की दया पर छोड़ दिया.



इस कार्यवाही से अंग्रेज, मराठों को ये दिखाना चाहते थे की हम तुम्हारे शत्रु नहीं हैं. मैसूर के हैदर अली तथा अन्य राजाओं के खिलाफ अभियान में मराठों से सहायता प्राप्त करने के लिए ये भूमिका जरूरी थी. और ऐसा ही हुआ, अंग्रेजों के इस क्षेत्र से जाने के तुरंत बाद ही मराठों ने जाटों के क्षेत्रों को रोंदना शुरू कर दिया. और सन 1783 में ग्वालियर का दुर्ग घेर लिया.



सात महीने तक मराठों ने घेरा डाल कर उसपर कब्जे का बहुत प्रयास किया, कभी बारूदी सुरंग बिछा कर और कभी हजारों सैनिकों के साथ रस्सों से और कभी सीढीयों से, कभी तोप के गोलों से, किन्तु किले में मौजूद जाटों ने राणा छत्रसिंह के नेतृत्व में मराठों को हर बार पीछे धकेल दिया. अंत में खीज कर महादजी सिंधिया ने वही पुराना पैंतरा खेला, जिस पैतरे ने इतिहास में कई बार अपना कमाल दिखाया था, याने कि चालाकी से षड़यंत्र करने का. राणा छत्रसिंह गोहद कि तरफ किसी बहुत जरूरी काम से दुर्ग से चुपचाप निकल कर गया था, जाते वक़्त, उसने किले कि बागडोर अपनी रानी और भतीजे राजवर को सौंपी थी तथा अंग्रेजों द्वारा बतौर सलाहकार नियुक्त मोतीमल नामक 'पुरबिया' व्यक्ति को इस काम में उनका सहायक नियुक्त कर दिया था.



महादजी सिंधिया ने इसी 'मोतीमल' नाम के व्यक्ति को रिश्वत और षड़यंत्र द्वारा पटा लिया. और उससे कई बार मुलाक़ात भी की, राणा को इस बात की सूचना उसके गुप्तचरों ने दी, राणा ने फ़ौरन रानी को ख़त लिख कर इसकी सूचना भिजवाई और मोतीमल को हटाने की बात कही, किन्तु ये ख़त मोतीमल ने रास्ते में ही गायब कर दिया और महादजी सिंधिया को इसकी सूचना भेजी. महादजी ने फ़ौरन अपनी थोड़ी सी सेना भेजी, इस बीच मोतीमल ने राणा के 2 हज़ार सैनिकों को लालच दे कर अपने साथ मिला लिया, तथा करीब 3 हज़ार सैनिकों में अफ़वाह उड़वा दी कि राणा भाग गया है, ये सुनकर ये सैनिक भी या तो भाग गए या उन्होंने हथियार डाल दिए.


करीब 600 सैनिक राणा के बहुत वफ़ादार निकले और अपने सेनापति राजवर के नेतृत्व में रानी की रक्षा के लिए, उन्हें अपने घेरे में लेकर सुरक्षित स्थान की तलाश करने लगे. किन्तु 50 हज़ार दुश्मनों से घिरे होने पर सुरक्षित स्थान कहाँ मिलता ?

भारत वीरों की धरती है, और यह ज़रूरी नहीं कि सारे वीर सिर्फ चित्तौड़ में ही हुए हैं. यहाँ ग्वालियर के दुर्ग में हज़ारों हज़ार शत्रुओं से घिरे, 600 गोहद के जाट अपनी रानी की रक्षा और राणा को दिए वफादारी के वचन को निभाते-निभाते इतिहास लिखने वाले थे. हालाँकि इन छोटी रियासतों की सच्ची कहानियों को हमारे सरकारी पिट्ठू इतिहासकारों ने कभी किताबों में जगह नहीं दी.


कविवर हरिहर निवास दिवेदी ने अपने 'गोपाचल आख्यान' में इस का बड़ा ही विस्तारपूर्वक वर्णन किया है.

उसका एक दोहा




बहुत वीर कौ घात करि l मथ्यौ युद्ध गंभीर ll

तब रणभूमि परौ सुभट l राजधरण रणधीर ll

मची रुधिर की कीच तहं l छोट महल के बीच ll

परे समर बहुबीर तहं l सौ और पांच गंभीर ll

वे 600 लड़ते रहे, मराठे और उनके साथी हज़ारों में आते रहे, वे कटते रहे काटते रहे, चिरते रहे चीरते रहे, आखिर वीरता का भी तो एक मुकाम होता है. जब सारे प्रयास निरर्थक साबित होने लगे तथा उनका सेनापति राजवर भी वीरगति को प्राप्त हुआ, तब गोहद की रानी ने अपने सहायकों के साथ महल के भीतरी भाग में जाकर दरवाज़े बंद कर लिए और इमारत में आग लगा ली, तथा अपनी लाज और अपने स्वाभिमान की खातिर प्राण दे दिए. ऐसी थी राणा छत्रसिंह की पत्नी और गोहद की रानी.


गोपाचल आख्यान से एक चौपाई:

तब रानी मन किन्ह विचारा l सुरपुर लेन समै अनुसारा ll

ताको खडग मृत्यु अरु आगी l जौहर महल भयो तन त्यागी ll

तब पटैल की वीर रिसाई l ऊपर चढे महल पै धाई ll

हल्ला करौ महल में भारी l राज बरन तब मृत्यु सम्हारी ll

मरे सुभट निज कर करिनी l अति संग्राम-रंग महि बरनी ll



कहते हैं वीरों के लिए युद्ध-भूमि पर लड़ते-लड़ते प्राण निछावर करने से सीधे स्वर्ग मिलता है, गोहद के इन वीरों को भी ज़रूर स्वर्ग मिला होगा, लेकिन इतिहास की किताबों में जगह नहीं मिली. न इस जौहर का कहीं जिक्र आता है, सिवाय हरिहर निवास द्विवेदी के 'गोपाचल आख्यान' के, तथा हमें गोहद के जाटों का इतिहास लिखने वाले 'डा.अजय कुमार अग्निहोत्री' का शुक्रिया कहना चाहिए जिन्होंने इस पर गहन शोध किया और अपनी पी.एच.डी. में इस विषय पर काम किया.

नोट: मुझे इस लेख को लिखने की प्रेरणा डा. अजय कुमार अग्निहोत्री की इसी पुस्तक को बार-बार पढ़ने के बाद मिली. मैंने इसे तीन भागों में पढने वाले की आसानी के लिए विभाजित किया है. आशा है पाठकों को ये पसंद आयेगा.

dear, you start with part 1..part1 seems incomplete ..then you start part 2 that does not continue part 1 but start a new story...anyone can notice that?..did you forget something to paste?

For example..
in part 2 , last lines are

you did not complete this story in the beginning of part3 but start part 3 with :

the history of this brave 'Race', incidents about Jats are found only through references in memoirs, letters and Royal farmaans.
and what i have written is also an incident that was found in the memoirs of a french army captain, who served in the army of
Mahadji Scindia. as i have interwoven the incident with the exact situation prevailing at that time in India. i hope you will find this
narrative complete.

I thought (mistakenly, I know it now...lol...) perhaps you missed some thing so raised my concern.By the way, some of the historians are working hard to dig out our history, specially ancient/medieval history is pretty opaque. It is not necessary that each and every brave thing should be in NCERT books and it is not a benchmark for us..we are doing our bit and people know how sturdy we are!!

Not all people are same, not all do/act same even there is a same situation, Sir.

The truth always different even some eye-witness tells. But all that matters is 'what we believe', and thus we behave and act. Jat always wants to be warrior, doesn't matters 'for sacrifice to' or 'to kill' someone, or just sit and watch and control.

और ये भारत इतिहास का दूसरा जोहर है

Jat is an exceptional breed as we all know. Even many non-Jats believe this rock-strong fact. The Britishers were no fools when they declared Jats a Martial Race. I don't deny the fact of gallantry of the Rana. But I personally feel that if our men folk are the Lions our females are Lionesses. They would not resort to such a dastardly act as 'the Jauhar" or self-immolation in order to save their chastity or faithfulness; they would rather succumb to death leading their forces however fewer in number they had as Rani Laxmi Bai did in the battle field. Please don't take my version of bravery negatively. But I must say it would have been more glorious had the Rani died fight the enemies.

The Rani did not fight the Maratha beacuse, they would have not killed her, instead would have capture her alive in accordance to trade with the Rana, who was 'alive' and was out of the fort due some secret task.

Rani laxmi bai is a totally different scenario, her king was dead, her kingdom was snatched by the british and no one in the whole country had intention to help her, die fighting was her only option[m not accusing the great lady, she was sure as valiant as a lioness]

but the Jat Rani is a different case
she knew that Maratha will not kill her at all
and she choose death instead of seeing her king surrender to Maratha in order to save her

Dear gaurhav Ji,The Jats have a history full of sacrifices for the honour of their motherland since times immeomrial and recorded history scattered here and there in archives located not only in India but abroad as well. If you go through the pages of history how can you deny the Jats' fight against Mahmud Ghaznvi, Mohd. Ghori, Timurlang, Babur, Aurangzeb, Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali and other invaders. Can you underestimate the sacrifices of the Jats time and again under the banner of Sarvkhap Panchayats or their conribution in the freedom movement. Had Raja Mahendra Partap not declared Azad Hind Government in Exile in Afghanistan in 1916 which was re-enlivened by honourble Netaji Subhash Chander Bose later on. Can anyone challenge the historic role of Maharaja Suraj Mal, the Plato of the Jats or for that matter the martyrdom of Raja Nahar Singh of Ballbhgarh and many more sacrifices during the National movement. Nonetheless, the persons referred to by you were great in their own right and I salute them for their contribution.Thanks and regards,Dr. Raj Pal Singh
