And this is how in due course of time, the gotra or clan name from Tomar would change in this case to Nalwa for his future generations.

    Wouldn't be so ?

    Serindia region in China

Ser-India (सरिन्दिया) or Serindia combines Seres (China) and India to refer to the part of Asia also known as Sinkiang, Chinese Turkistan or High Asia. The art of this region is known as Serindian.

This region was quite extensive from Badakshan to Lopnor Lakeand Gobi desert.

A number of archaeological sites are found around or near the Lop Nur region. These early settlements are associated with an ancient people of Indo-European origin. The region in Hindi is known as Uparla Hind. Dalip Singh Ahlawat has mentioned as under in his book:

Details of how Arjuna arrives Harivarsha

[wiki]Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 25[/wiki] mentions that the Pandavas crossing the White mountains (शवेतपर्वत), subjugated the country of the Kimpurushas ruled by Darumaputra, after a collision involving a great slaughter of Kshatriyas, and brought the region under his complete sway.

Having reduced that country, the son of Indra (Arjuna) with a collected mind marched at the head of his troops to the country called Hataka, ruled by the Guhyakas.

Subjugating them by a policy of conciliation, the Kuru prince beheld (in that region) that excellent of lakes called Manasa and various other lakes and tanks sacred to the Rishis. And the exalted prince having arrived at the lake Manasa conquered the regions ruled by the Gandharvas that lay around the Hataka territories. Here the conqueror took, as tribute from the country, numerous excellent horses called Tittiri, Kalmasha, Manduka.

At last the son of the slayer of Paka, arriving in the country of North Harivarsha desired to conquer it. Thereupon certain frontier-guards of huge bodies and endued with great strength and energy, coming to him with gallant hearts, said to Arjuna that -

"This country can be never conquered by you. They advised him to return. Who ever enters this region, if human, is sure to perish. Your conquests have been enough. Nor is anything to be seen here that may be conquered by you. The Northern Kurus live here. There cannot be war here. Even if you enter it, you will not be able to behold anything, for with human eyes nothing can be seen here. If, however you want anything else, tell us, so that we may do thy bidding".

Thus addressed by them, Arjuna smilingly addressing them, said,--'I desire the acquisition of the imperial dignity by Yudhishthira the just, of great intelligence. If your land is shut against human beings, I shall not enter it. Let something be paid unto Yudhishthira by you as tribute. Hearing these words of Arjuna, they gave him as tribute many cloths and ornaments of celestial make, silks of celestial texture and skins of celestial origin.

It was thus that Arjuna subjugated the countries that lay to the North, having fought numberless battles with both Kshatriya and robber tribes. And having vanquished the chiefs and brought them under his sway he exacted from them much wealth, various gems and jewels, the horses of the species called Tittiri and Kalmasha, as also those of the colour of the parrot's wings and those that were like the peacocks in hue and all endued with the speed of the wind. And surrounded, by a large army consisting of the four kinds of forces, the hero came back to the excellent city of Sakraprastha. And Partha offered the whole of that wealth, together with the animals he had brought, unto Yudhishthira the just. And commanded by the monarch, the hero retired to a chamber of the palace for rest."

Note- Above information from Mahabharata gives us very important historical information. See [wiki]Caucasus[/wiki] on Jatland Wiki.

Pliny the Elder's Natural History (AD 77-79) derives the name of the Caucasus from the Scythian kroy-khasis (“ice-shining, white with snow”).

    It means Caucasus is nothing but Shvetaparvata mentioned in shloka 1 (स शवेतपर्वतं वीरः समतिक्रम्य भारत, थेशं किं पुरुषावासं दरुमपुत्रेण रक्षितम)

This chapter also mentions Shakapura (शक्यं पुरं) in shloka 9 and excellent city of Sakraprastha (शक्र परस्थं पुरॊत्तमम) in shloka 20.

Thus Mahabharata is describing clearly the land of Shakas that is Scythia as mentioned by Pliny the Elder's Natural History.

    Shakraprastha

    Laxman Ji,

You may be aware that Shakra is another name of Indra. So Arjuna comes back to Indraprastha, celebrated city for many centuries and now in reckoning to take place of the name Delhi.
    Thanks

Yes Rana Saheb. You are right. Sakra and Vasava were used exclusively for the original Indra. Though modern texts usually adhere to the name Indra, the traditional Hindu texts (the Vedas, epics and Puranas) use Indra, Sakra and Vasava interchangeably and with the same frequency.

There is one interesting description where all three names are used. Jats have a tradition of erecting Manda in marriage of girls. Māndā (मांडा) - a pole made of khejadi tree put on the day of marriage of a girl. Earlier this pole used to be of bamboo. This tradition seems to be extension of tradition explained in [wiki]Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 63[/wiki] (I.63.17) where a king of the name of Uparichara, of the Paurava race, called also Vasu, conquered the kingdom of Chedi under instructions from Indra. Indra also gave the king, for his gratification, a bamboo pole for protecting the honest and the peaceful. After the expiry of a year, the king planted it in the ground for the purpose of worshipping the giver thereof, viz., Sakra. From that time forth, all kings following Vasu's example, began to plant a pole for the celebration of Indra's worship.

But now we hardly remember Indra? Why ?

    iNDRA fORGOTTEN
    lAXMAN jI,
In the Rigveda Indra is given a very high position. He is addressed in the highest number of hymns next to Agni.He represented the element Sun in various positions. He is invokeed asd the king as the king as well as the Commander of the divine Army( a sort of dual charge). Endemic as the feud between Gods and Demons has been the job certainly became more exacting. Naturally the leadership in battles and the demandas of a king's did brought some reverses. The Gods were indeed worried.
The Mahabharata in the VanaParva gives an interesting story how the seperate independent post was created to accommodate Karttikeyathe c-in-C of the Army of Gods Indra remaing only King (shall we say, afigure -head).
Further mythology assigns other role to this King of the devAS, NOT COVERING HIM WITH GLORY IN SOME CASES- Like the one in the seduction of Ahilya, otherwise a pious lady of a holy sage. Indra carries ther sobriquet-'Ahilyajara'.There are other instacxes where his benefection came through dubious roles The worst was when he became a stereotype of all that was nothing but intrigue. His throne remains ever precarious.Naturaly the worshippers theronged to better alternatives. Our mythlogy has no dearth of role models.Havent we discarded many steriotypes not of our liking?

Shakraprastha = Shakra + Prastha = Shakra + A table land on the top of a mountain. Shakra is sansktitized form of Shaka, As Chaka of Prakrit language becomes Chakra in sanskrit. It means the Shakraprastha refers to a plateau on mountains. I think it can not be Delhi. The place was belonging to Shaka people. I think Indra lost significance after dominance of Shaka people.

    Shakraprastha

    Laxman Ji,
    Please consider this:
    1. Prastha is seen frequently used as the second and end part of town or village names. It is a pure Sanskrit term and is found in compound with first part of town names.Indraprastha, Shronaprastha, Vyaghraprastha, Pani/Prani-prastha, Tilaprastha etc. could cited as examples.
2.Shakra need not be taken as sanskritised form of 'Shaka'. Sanskrit literature is replete with the use of the term 'Shaka' in the sense of a people. The famous sanskrit play 'Mudra -Rakshasa' amply demostrates it. Further we are not conversant with hybrid compound words.

  22. #277
Rana saheb Prastha is also used for 'Peeth'. That meaning suits here. But puzzling thing is what was need to change Indraprastha to Shakraprastha. Need further research.

    Laxman Ji,

I can think of one reason, at least. Tendency in Sanskrit writings to show change without changing the substance. Examples: instead of saying two we use the term netra if counting is the context.Similarly Vasu for 8, Rudrah for 11, Adityas for 12 and so on. We find synonyms in place of proper names but not in the manner ofhalf way house -which Sanskritists call Ardhajarti-nyaya. s.s.rana

By sheer ignorance of word 'Gupta' (गुप्त), historians have done a big blunder by associating emperors of Gupta Empire (240-528 AD - Srigupta, Chandragupta-II, Samudragupta, Ramagupta, Skandgupta, Kumaragupta etc.) with trading community (often called 'Baniya') who now-a-days write their surnames as Gupta (गुप्ता).

Kings of Gupta empire were Dharan (धारण/ धारी/ धारीवाल) gotra Jats, whose lengthy names ended with गुप्त. This was never their surname or gotra name, but part of their first name itself.

Interestingly, Chanakya's real name was Vishnugupta (विष्णुगुप्त). He was a Brahmin, but was never associated by historians with 'Baniya' community.

Dalip Singh Ahlawat has written -

(JRAS, 1901, P. 99; 1905, P. 814; ABORI XX P. 50; JBORS, xix, P. 113-116; vol xxi, P. 77 and vol xxi, P. 275)।

(Imperial History of India, P. 72)।
