    Lightbulb Jats in Ukraine

The search of Russian surnames as studied by Blitz in year 2002 on its Ethnic, Religious, and National Index, revealed a number of common surnames between Jats of India and the native population. For example, there is surname - Burdakov (Burdakoff).[1]

Mr. Ivan Burdak is a prominent diplomat in Ukraine.[2] There are surnames in Ukraine such as BurdakOV meaning son of Burdak, and BurdakOVA meaning daughter of Burdak.[2]

    I. Sara, a Canadian barrister and solicitor has pointed out that the recent excavations in the Ukraine and Crimea provide visible links of Jats and Scythians.[1]

Cap. Dalip Singh Ahalawat has reported in an article published in Jat Samaj Patrika (Oct./Nov. 1991), that Jats had ruled in Scythia and Central Asia. He has given a list of about 70 Jat gotras who have ruled over there.[1]

    B. S. Nijjar suggests:

"The Jats are the descendants of Scythians, whose kingdom's capital was Scythia, in the present Ukraine (Ukrainian), Soviet Social Republic, is the constituent Republic of the European USSR (Population 49,757,000) in 1947. Now Ukraine's capital is Kiev, the third leading city in Russia. Before the invasion of the golden herd, 13th century B.C. Scythian, ancient kingdom of indeterminate boundaries, centered in the area north of the Black Sea."[3]

The Scythians who brought an end to the Greek rule first in Bactria and then in India, were originally Scythians of present Ukraine in Russia. Persians named them Sakas, who onwards began to be called Sakas, in India.
    [1]

Herodotus expressly states that the term 'Sakas' was used by the Persians to denote Scythians generally; and this statement is certainly in accordance with the use of the word in the inscriptions of Darius, the king of Iran. In one of these, it occurs together with descriptions which show that it denotes certain Scythians in Europe as well as two branches of Scythians in Asia. These, we have reason to believe, are specimens merely of the innumerable swarms of nomads which had been finding their way during untold centuries from that great hive of humanity, China, to Western Asia and to Europe.

In a laudable attempt to add to existing Gandhian Literature, G O I, Southeby's and the Sarid family have signed an agreement. According to this agreement GOI has bought for $1.28 million the entire lot of letters papers, photographs and other material related to Mahatma Gandhi. The collection belonged to German Jewish architect and body builder Hermann Kallenbach, a close friend of Gandhiji and the collection was slated to have been auctioned by Southeby's in London on 10th July.

Could the example followed by the Jats to collect material connected with stalwarts of the community!

Red face Delhi's oldest jat village

My village Mundka situated in west Delhi has very historical story behind his name,
In my childhood my grandfather told me how our village is named , he told that our village exists before the period of Mahabharta which is around 3500 to 5000 yrs ago story, he said before the well known fight between pandavas and kauravas , krishna cut the sisupal's head , villgers ceremonial that "mund" and village named "mundka" after that day and "shamshan" made their by villagers , which is still used .
Villagers made a talab named "sishwala johad" on that place where mund falls and also established the "shivaling" near by place , all these historical places are still exits but not on good conditions .
When i was teenager boy my grandfather also told me that our ancestors fought with "gore" jaati people who lived on that place before our ancestors came from ajmer and our gotra is Lakra-Chouhan , initially it is only chouhan but they came in lakdi ki gadi that's why people called us lakra,
Is any jat bhandu can put some light on this story?

Shishupal, Krishana, and Mahabharata ok but Ajmer-Chohan and Lakra Chohan no reconciliation with the former. These may be clues juxtaposed and intermixed inextricably by the bards during late medieval periods when Rajputs came into existence and Jat power was lost to them in Rajasthan then known as Rajputana. The bards or bhats tried to link the Jats to one or the other ruling Rajput gotra and thus twisted the historical facts beyond recognition. This has created a problem with several ancient Jat gotras too! You being the original resident of your village, kindly try to further explore the folklore and history from the local people and put them here for further discussion please.

    Thanks

    Jats & Goths

James Francis Hewitt also advocated the connection between Jats and Goths:

"The Jats ... trace their descent to the land of Ghazni and Kandahar, watered by the mother-river of the Kushika race, the sacred Haetuman.t or Helmand. Their name connects them with the Getae of Thrace, and thence with the Gattons, said by Pytheas to live on the southern shores of the Baltic, the Gaettones placed by Ptolemy and Tacitus on the Vistula in the country of the Lithuanians, and the Goths of Gothland = Sweden. This Scandinavian descent is confirmed by their system of land-tenure, for the chief tenure of the Muttra district is that called Bhagadura, in which the members of the village brotherhood each hold as their family property a separate and defined area among the village lands, according to the customs of the Bratovos of the Balkan peninsula and the Hof-bauers of North-West {p.482} Germany .. The Getae of the Balkans are said by Herodotus to be the bravest and most just of the Thracians." (Hewitt 1894, p.481-482)

    Great Jats / Ta-Yue-Che / Massagetae / Little Jats / Siao-Yue-Che / Thyssagetae

    Excerpts from http://www.iranian.com/History/2005/March/Gutians/ :

"The Chinese were right in stating that the Hiung-nu were a part of the Yue-Che (reads as Guti ) people, and these Guti people had two divisions, the Ta-Yue-Che and the Siao-Yue-Che, exactly corresponding to the Massagetae and Thyssagetae of Herodotus (a classical Greek writer of fifth century BC), meaning the "Great-Jats" and the "Little-Jats" respectively. Almost every tribe of ancient Middle East (West Asia) and Central Asia, is represented among the present day Jats in India." (Dahiya 1980, p.23ff, cited in Dhillon 1994, p.10)

    Thanks

If you work on time line ,then it is very easy to reconstruct the history. The Rajputs are late entrant. But historians must work without prejudice.

Steven M. Collins also advocates that the Massagetaeans are none other than the "Great Jits or Jats" of Asia.

    Dionysus and Shiva

    Wendy Doniger O' Flaherty wrote:

"That Śiva and Dionysus bear a striking resemblance to one another has been known for a long time. The ancient Greeks noticed it, referring to Śiva as Indian Dionysus, on the one hand, and to Dionysus as the god from the orient.... In recent times, scholars have pointed out numerous significant points of correspondence...."

    Jathera
History and study of the Jats. By Professor B.S Dhillon (p.113) explains about Jathera. Jats tend to continue to follow their ancient custom of worshipping their common ancestors. In the Punjabi language, it is called the "Jathera" worship. Usually, it is mandatory in rural areas for newly wed Jats to visit and worship the village "Jathera" shrine, erected in the fields, usually a day after their wedding day, with fanfare.

Can somebody write a para on Jathera so as to add to Jatland Wiki.

Why is Jathera tradition not found in Rajasthan Jats ?
