THE BUILT heritage in Rohtak district is under threat as much of it has been under neglect for proper upkeep. The threat looms larger as demolition activity is non-stoppable due to ever increasing pressure on space from urbanization. Division of joint families and need for creation of more space for both residential as well as commercial motives has altered the use of many a heritage properties of yore. Several fine looking buildings erected in traditional Indian and Mughal style such as spacious havelis with ornate facade, finely carved wooden door sets and sand stone pillars, mosques that were once lavishly decorated in stucco work, Dharamshalas with fine looking statues of Radha and Krishna and temple spires that had chitradhas in niches, in addition to, frescoes on walls have disappeared one-by-one from the old quarters of the town as was revealed during a fresh survey carried out early this year in Rohtak city. The survey was extended to study a few large village estates such as Balambha, Farmana Khas, Lakhan Majra, Bhaini Surjan and Meham by Society for Peoples’ Advancement,Technology and Heritage (SOPATH).

"Scant attention was paid to the preservation of the character of the old sectors of fairly old villages and historical towns that was attributed to several fine looking buildings arrayed on both sides of the alley," said Ranbir Phaugat a heritage crusaders and photographer for long time and member (Life) of INTACH. Much damage came to be noticed since the last survey done by Neeraja Lugani in 1986, in the city under the auspices of the INTACH, said Singh who was earlier co-convener of the HaryanaState Chapter and credited with pioneering effort of documenting the architectural heritage including frescoes of Haryana.
During the fresh survey started in June 2008, many historically important buildings were found obliterated or altered for new usage. A few sites such as the Christian grave yard No. 2 located near the intersection of Gohana road and northern by-pass near Sukhpura village–totally engulfed by urban sprawl, has been altogether eliminated by a school building that encroached most of the land space it found suitable for its expansion. The district administration as well as the institutional owners found it beyond their capacities to prevent encroachments or evict them.
The Christian cemetery located near the District Courts, several mosques of the pre-partition era converted into dwelling units and a few havelis in the city located at Railway road, Barra Bazar, Pratap Mohalla, Babra Mohalla, Bhiwani road and Jhajjar road have either been pulled down or demolished by the owners. The most regrettable incident noticed during the survey for fresh listing of the sites and heritage value buildings was pulling down of the decoratively carved façade of the Digambar Jain Temple at Babra Mohalla in the Bara Bazar. It was sold to art dealers at a throw away price of only one lakh of rupees.

In regard to small towns and villages such as Meham, Farmana Khas, Balhamba, Mokhra, Bharan, Nindana, Lakhan Majra, Chiri, Sanghi, Khidwali, Rithal and Bhalaut the situation was found to be pretty bad as not only the buildings of several Chaupals and Shivalayas but also the masonry wells and tanks containing vestiges of traditional art and architecture faced utter neglect or partly demolished and repaired with new materials. Several of these building of yore were a treasure house of the traditional art in the form of wall paintings. Incidentally, Sanghi is the paternal village of Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister of Haryana.
The purpose of the fresh survey, which was completed as scientifically as possible, was to record in detail the various features relating to art and architecture of the heritage value buildings having several aesthetically rich features in addition to the frescoes -wall paintings, in several of them for scholarly interpretation and restoration or conservation in future. "The indifference of the people towards preservation of the built and artistic heritage is a matter of great concern," lamented Singh and added that "the city fathers, politicians, intellectuals, institutions and the Government need to work hard for both documentation and preservation of the cultural and built heritage of Haryana so that it could be showcased to others across continents."------By Ranbir singh.
